St. Louis, Sept. 28 (U.F9 World series prices, as an nounced by Betting Commis sioner James J. Carroll to day, were: 9 to 20 against the New York Yankees win ning the series; 9 to 5 against the St Louis Cardinals win ning. In other words, the Yankees are approximately 2 to 1 series favorites. On the first game, the price was 7 to 10 against the Yankees winning with Ernie Bonham on the mound and 6 to 5 against the Cardinals winning with Mort Cooper pitching. New York, Sept. 28 U.R The major leagues closed the books on one of their most spec tacular seasons today as the St. Louis Cardinals and New York Yankees took time out for two days before squaring off in the world series on Wednesday. Although the diamond cam paign began this year under the ominous shadow of war, with military needs cutting into player personnel, the dramatic triumph of the Cardinals over the Dodgers in the National league and the Yankees' second consecutive victory in the Amer ican league, gave promise of the most colorful series in years. The Cards' great stretch drive 43 victories in the final 51 games, gave them the cham pionship at sportsman's park yesterday. The Cards won a doubleheader from the Chicago Cubs, 9-2 and 4-1, and clinched the flag via Ernie White's five hitter in the opener. The twin win left the Cardinals' final margin over the Dodgers, who beat the Phils, 4-3, at two games, while the Cubs dupli cated last year's windup by finishing in sixth place. We're climbing right out on that high, shaky limb nd picking the Cardinals to beat the Yankees in the world series. We re selecting the St. Louis j swifties to take the series four games to three in one of the greatest classics of baseball his tory. We like the Red Birds be cause of their winning momen tum, their fighting edge, their youthful speed and their luck among other things. Lady Luck quite likely will prove an ultra-important factor in this particular series, which promises top-flight pitching and lightning infield play by both outfits. Although both clubs pack dangerous batting punch, we don't expect long-driving to turn the tide because: 1. Both teams have excellent outfields. 2. The pitchers seem capable of preventing distance spot-hitting. Therefore, we say: Watch for the infield breaks, and watch the Cards take advantage of those breaks. We may be looking at the clubs from a cock-eyed angle, but we prefer the Cardinals pitching staff because it appar ently is better balanced. Billy Southworth has two ace right handers, Coper and Beazley, and two good southpaws, Lanier and White, whom he can use as start ers. Bears opened defense of their National Pro fessional Football league crown Sunday with a smashing 44-28 triumph over the Packers at Green Bay, Wis., as two other clubs the New York Giants and Brooklyn Dodgers scored impressive opening-game vic tories. The Giants shaded the Red skins, 14-7, before 34,700 spec tators in Washington and the Dodgers trounced the Philadel phia Eagles, 35-14, at Buffalo, N. Y., before a slim crowd of about 9,000. Cleveland's Rams blanked the Lions, 14-0, before 14,646 at Detroit and weather cancelled the Steelers-Chicago Cardinals game at Pittsburgh. The doubleheader between the third-place St. Louis Browns and sixth-place Chicago White Sox was cancelled. Washington, which finished seventh, and Philadelphia, which finished last, were unscheduled. Four straight victories after losing the opening game of the playoffs gave the Rainiers the right to meet the winner of the Los Angeles-San Diego series, still undecided. Editorial Comment A discussion arose this week as to the treatment of soldiers in various cities, with Medford panned rather severely by a soldier who expressed a very definite preference for Ashland and Grants Pass. The main point to remember in this discussion, however. Is that Ashland is treating the service men excellently, and the service men, both officers and non-commissioned men, ap preciate this. E L Washington school opened its second week of classes today on a revised schedule in keeping with a wartime program, classes beginning at 8:30 a. m. rather than 8:50 a. m. E. H. Hedrick, city school superintendent, stat ed that the change was due to increased enrollment. The third grade of the school has been added to the depart ment with Mrs. Vern Shangle added as a new teacher. Miss Lyle Gregory also will teach in the department as the former third grade teacher.
