(U.PJ An offer by Sam Rosoff, a sub way contractor to turn in a whole railroad 41 miles long and containing 7,000 torn of steel to the national salvage drive was topped today by plans of federal and municipal au thorities in New York to wreck 8,000 buildings and get scrap. Both Rosoff's offer and the proposal of the New York.au thorities, spurred by Park Com missioner Robert Moses, grew out of the current country-wide scrap drive sponsored by the American Newspaper Publish ers' association. Eyesore Doomed Razing of the first building In New York probably will start next week under the direction of War Materials, Inc., the new federal salvage corporation. Nine other buildings have been selected to go, including the SS. 000,000 22-story Hudson Tow ers, long a Manhattan white ele phant. Started in 1924, it was to have been a big private hos pital. Actually it never has been occupied and is owned by the city. It is expected to yield 1,000 tons of steel. Most of the other buildings to be demolished under Moses' de termined plan, are "old law" tenements. Moses said that the owners, who have evaded the new building code while reaping profits from these slum apart ments, will get short shrift now. "We'll ask Washington for quick action, if the owners try to fight," he said. Sf? grant who made a fortune build ing subways, will have to get permission of the ICC to scrap his railroad, the Delaware & Northern, which serves eight towns in Delaware county, N. Y with two trains daily and one on Sunday. To own a railroad was an early ambition of Rosoff. He bought the D. & N. in 1928 for $70,000 and spent $600,000 on it. He claims it was appraised at $10,000,000 in December. 1937. "It's a going concern, but the country needs the scrap worse than that railroad is needed up there," said Rosoff. "There's enough steel in it to make 400 medium tanks or 280.000 .50 calibre machine guns, I'm told. Everything I have I owe to this great nation which gave me my start. We must win this war. It my railroad, converted into guns and armament, can help achieve this end, I want to scrap it." The metal drive In the New York area found an enthusiastic response everywhere. In fac tories , offices and apartment buildings, thousands of tons of metal articles ranging from coat hangers to Rolls-Royce automo biles were offered. Fine Cars Donated The wife of the former movie magnate, William Fox, donated two Rolls-Royces and a Hispano Suiza car from her home at Woodburgh, L. I. Mayor Vincent J. Murphy of Newark, N. J., turned In a set of plumbing tools. "I haven't worked at the plumbing trade for 20 years and I hope to stick in city hall a few more years, so I'm giving up my tools," he said. The New York World's Fair grounds in Flushing Meadows were turned to as a source of scrap, but the haul there was disappointing. Huss Strike Back on Two Sectors SGT. Fitzgerald of Sams Valley has written re questing that the Mail Tribune be sent to him. Sgt. Fitzgerald has been sta Honed in Alaska for over 13 months and says Alaska is fine but he longs for the atmosphere of Southern Oregon at times and thinks the Mail Tribune might help to add that touch. Sgt. Fitzgerald was formerly an em ployee of the City of Medford. Mr. and Mrs. Fitzgerald also have two other sons in the serv- i ice, Jerome, of the marine corps stationed at Indian Island, and Gerald, who left September 22 for Fort Lewis.
