Leaves Hospital Charles E. Clay, Sr., confined in Commun ity hospital since September 13 for treatment of injuries he suf fered in an automobile accident, was discharged today to return to his home, 23 Crater Lake ave nue. He is recovering nicely. Convalescing Mrs. Margaret Hulen was reported as convales cing nicely today from a major operation performed in Com- a unity hospital Monday morn g. It was erroneously stated yesterday that Mrs. Hulen was confined in Sacred Heart hos pital. To Active Duty George RoB ertson, former manager of the Rogue Valley Golf club and of the Medford hotel lounge, will leave tonight for active duty as foreman in the U. S. naval construction battalion. Robert son will go to Portland and then to Norfolk, Va. In Training Robert L. Mul lin, 209 South Orange street, who recently enlisted in the naval reserve as aviation metal smith, third class, is now under going a period of recruit train ing at the naval training station t the Great Lakes, 111., station. Defense Meeting There will be a meeting for the employes of the Medford Corporation and Timber Products, Wednesday at 7:30 p. m. in the auditorium of the senior high school. Two sub jects will be discussed, policing industrial plants and first aid nd its value to hospitalization nd medical care. Clyde Ficht ner will handle the policing sub ject and Dr. L. O. Inskeep will handle the medical. Earl Yoak- ley is instructor in charge. Volunteer Workers Majority of work at the war price and ra tioning board office in the city hall is being carried on at the present time by four loyal volun teer workers, Hobart Price, ex ecutive secretary of the board stated today. Dellene Thompson, one office worker has resigned to accept another position, Edith Miller is ill at home and the ilrd, Mrs. Leona Ormond, has Teen called to Los Angeles bv the illness of her son. To College Ernst Ludwlg, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Ludwig left Saturday evening for Cor- vallis to begin his studies at Ore gon State college. He was grad uated from Medford high school in the class of 1942. - Cars Collide Mary D. Dole of 224 Clark street and W. G Knox of Union Creek were op erators of passenger cars which collided on the Crater Lake high way about 11 p. m. Sunday ac cording to a report on file. Officer to Visit Palma Black, Great Pocahontas of California of the Pocahontas lodge, will be guest of the local Pocahontas lodge at Redman hall Friday evening at 8 o clock. All mem bers are requested to be present Purse Stolen Mrs. Werlenla Pitts of 532 South Fir street re ported to city police yesterday that her purse was stolen from her car while it was parked on East Sixth street. The purse con tained two sugar cards, a slip for 25 pounds of sugar and other items. Information Wanted The Jackson County Red Cross office in the county court house re quested information today con cerning the whereabouts of Jos eph F. Rosner, age 28, son of Mrs. A. E. Rosner of Baltimore, M. D., and also information con cerning J. E. Sweet, Btry C, 86th C. A. (A.A.), Camp Haan, Cal. Back Home Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Fitzgerald have returned to their home here after a week's vacation in Oregon. They motored north by the Willamette pass to Portland to visit friends and relatives and returned to Medford by way of Astoria and the coast route. In turn the "Rolling Five" composed of soldiers at the Negro Center will entertain with selections for the Troupers. To Army Paul C. McOuat, son of P. J. McOuat of Ashlinad and brother of Mrs. W. K. Lydiard of this city left Satur day for the U. S. army ar force classification center in Nashville. Term., to enter training as an aviation cadet. He was gradu ated from Medford senior high school in the class of 1940. To Portland Mrs. Joseph R. Marshall, Sr., plans to leave by train tonight for Portland, where she and Mr. Marshall will make their future home. Mr. Marshall left Monday, but will return Fri day to wind up his affairs here. They have disposed of their home at 1130 West 10th street and of their Bear Creek ranch south of town. On Leave Fred Beck, son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Beck of the Old Stage Road is enjoying a 10-day furlough at the home of his parents. He has been sta tioned at Sheppard Field, Tex.. and Chanute Field, 111., since joining the U. S. army air corps At Sheppard field he has been acting as instructor in mechanics at the air corps technical field and will leave soon for Kelly Field, Tex., to receive training as a flying cadet. His parents and sister, Miss D Anne, met him in Portland and accompanied him to this city. Beck is also acting on the committee arrang ing the "Oregon Night" for Octo ber 3 at Sheppard field. Lieut. Young has been receiving instruction in the U. S. navy air corps and recently transferred to the marine air corps. Upon leaving Medford he will be sta tioned at San Diego, Cal. He has been with the U. S. armed forces for the past seven months. Pears tn Georgia Dick Jewett, former Mail-Tribune re porter now In the army, writes from Camp Gordon, Augusta, Ga., that he discovered a box of Raymond Reter's Bartlett pears in an Augusta market re cently. They were selling three for 10 cents. The Incident would have been colossal, had he not received a box of Medford Bart letts just the day before from his family. Jewett is the son of Prof, and Mrs. H. P. Jewett of Central Point. USO activities at tha Ashland center Sunday were busy from morning until 10 p. m. reports USO director Mrs. Helen J. Small. Reading, letter writing, relaxing, sports and dining were enjoyed at the center, in the park and Ashland, homes. Al Holmberg, of Camp White, broth er of Paul Holmberg, Minnesota state archery champion partici pated in the archery contest and next Sunday tryouta for the American Round will begin. "Cook you own dinner" was a success Sunday afternoon with about 45 participating and later an "everybody sing" hour led by Cay Hufman closed the day. A group of Ashland Junior host esses also attended the tea dance at Camp White Sunday after noon. Cotton knee-pads are being manufactured to prevent Red Cross first aid workers from contracting "defense maid's knee" while administering arti ficial respiration. This year s fair is to be some what streamlined due to war conditions, shortage of transpor tation materials and the labor situtalon. The home economics fair, the poultry show and the livestock show have been com bined into one fair which gives promise of a record showing of exhibits. Each club is making plans to enter as many exhibits as there are members in the club. The main attraction will be the annual livestock sale. Be ginning at 1:30 September 30. all fat stock will be sold at public auction. In this sale will be prize winning fat stock that represents the individual effort of the owner, stock that many professional breeders could not equal.
