Kansas City. Mo., Sept. 2J. (U.R) The American Legion "yes terday adopted unanimously a strongly worded resolution call ing for universal conscription of the country's resources. Includ ing the immediate drafting of 18 I and 19-year-old youths. In a report to the 24th na tional convention of the legion, the legislative committee said "we demand of the national ad ministration and of congress im mediate legislation for drafting or conscription of all the re sources of this nation, including capital, labor, industry and agri culture, as well as the fighting manpower." In a standing voice vote dele gates rousingly adopted the re solution. ' A voluminous report by the committee on national defense, headed by Warren Atherton of Stockton, Cal., was adopted un animously. Would Call Boys The report called for immedi ate drafting into military service of all 18 and 19-year-olds, and advocated a post-war regulation that all American males be re quired to undergo at least one year of military training before reaching their 22nd birthdays. In addition, the report de manded a post-war army, navy and air force "of sufficient strength" to cope with any eventuality. Delegates also adopted a re solution calling for job security for veterans now and after the war. Rev. Paul Mortimer of Poca tello, Ida., was named national chaplain. No town was designated for the 1943 convention, and leaders doubted if another convention would be held until after the war. Two cities, Omaha and Pittsburgh, were offered as choices. Geneva, 111., Sept. 22. (U.R) An angry farmer, swinging a heavy potato masher, thwarted the apparent kidnaping plot of two youthr who had held mem bers of his family at gunpoint for five hours, authorities said today. The farmer was Edward O'Connell, 44, who had em ployed the youths, Merrill Smith, 17, and Fred (Lucky) Du bay, 16. to work on his farm near here. O'Connell left his home yes terday, leaving his wife, Jessie, 43, alone. His children, Mary Catherine, 14, Sue, 12, and Ed ward, six, were at school. Smith, son of an Aurora, 111., real estate man, and Dubay, who later identified himself as a fugitive from a reformatory at South Windham, Me., were dig ging potatoes. She told Superior Judge Ru ben S. Schmidt that she married the wealthy sportsman in Ar gentina three years ago, after a nine-day "sign language" court ship. She said when she mar ried Somermeier she could speak no English and he didn't under stand Spanish, "so we talked In a sort of sign language." Two witnesses for Mrs. Somer meier, Mrs. Bessie Price and Mrs. Thelma Johnson, told the court Somermeier had spanked his wife one night when she re fused to take part in a poker game at Mrs. Johnson s Ray mond, Cal., ranch. "Mr. Somermeier grabbed his wife by the arm, took her up stairs and then we heard sounds of a spanking and screams," Mrs. Johnson said. More than 200 writers, artists, and others were employed full- time in handling Petain s per sonal propaganda. Their quar ters covered 12 times the floor space of the French foreign of fice. Nine biographers of Petain have been written, reviewed, and published under the control of his propaganda staff. Scores of artists, medalists, engravers, and sculptors have come to Vichy, and their com positions have been turned out in mass production in terre cotte, bronze, plaster or parchment. A sailor in the U. S. navy gets his first cuff-braid when he be comes an apprentice seaman. By Hubert Uxlcull (United Press Correspondent) Stockholm, Sept. 22. (U.R) Adolf Hitler, abandoning hope that Germany can crush Russia, has started building defenses to hold his eastern gains so the bulk of his army will be free to meet the threat of a second front in the west, unusually well In formed sources said today. The same sources expressed belief that Hitler might start a peace offensive this winter and tell the German people that a separate peace with Russia was necessary without the total vic tory he had promised them. Chain of Citadels Informants said the new Ger man defenses in the east would not be along a continuous line, like the west wall opposite France or the old French Mag inot line, but a chain of hedgehog-like citadels designed to permit a relatively few men, garrison troops, to hold the Rus sians while the main German armies moved to western Europe. The position of tha new east ern defense line naturally was secret but Informants reported that In parts of northern and central Russia It had already been defined, and that construc tion of actual defenses had been started. In the south. It was said, the Germans hoped to make further gains and then orient their de fense line as far as possible on the Volga river. British Sea Strength Making Fast Revival, Admiralty Lord Says London, Sept 22. (U.R) Naval observers today Inter preted a speech of First lord of the Admiralty A. V. Alexander as a revelation that Britain now has no fewer than 14 battleships, five aircraft carriers, 78 cruisers and a huge fleet of destroyers, including four new battleships to replace the ill-fated Barnham, Prince of Wales, Hood and Re pulse. Speaking at Sheffield, Alex ander declared that Britain had replaced four aircraft carriers and 22 cruisers in addition to tha capital ships lost In the last two and a quarter years since 'une, 1940. "We lost a considerable num ber of destroyers," Alexander said, "but thev. too. have heon more than replaced." A clean dish towel on the bottom of the pan guards against breakage. Let jars stand in hot water until they're ready to use. Sterilize new topi or lids by placing in pan and covering with boiling water. Al ways use new rubbers, and dip in boiling water to sterilize before using. There are several kinds of fruit jars and lids, so be sure you thoroughly understand the kind you use. Because sealing methods differ. 'M.
