Fishbein of 707 West 11th street was operator of an automobile which skidded in loose gravel yesterday on Ross Lane about 4:10 p. m. and ran into a tele phone post and fence. The three other occupants of the car, Mrs. Fishbein, Barbara Ellen and Allan A. Fishbein were slightly injured In the mishap, according to a report on file. . Aviation Cadet Houston R. Pitts, son of Mrs. A. R. Pitts, 913 Queen Ann street, has enrolled as an aviation cadet in the army air force pre-flight school for pilots at Maxwell Field, Mont gomery, Ala. Cadet Pitts attend ed Oregon State College, S.O.C.E., and had civilian flight training before being accepted as an aviation cadet. His two broth ers, Milton and Champ Pitts, are now in the army air force. - Here Briefly Mr. and Mrs. Fred Colvlg of Portland were brief visitors with relatives here yesterday en route to Portland after a visit in California. They left by United Mainllner for the north. Mrs. Colvlg visited In Los Angeles and Hollywood and also In Yreka with her sister, Mrs. Dorothea Maroney and her brothers, Michael and Paul Red dy. Undergoes Operation Mrs. Margaret Hulen, wife of Billy Hulen, sports editor of the Mail Tribune, was reported at noon to be recovering well from a ma jor operation performed this morning at Sacred Heart hos pital. Corporal Wallace Iverson, sta tioned at the Portland air base, spent the week-end here with his mother, Mrs. Cal Dusenberry and family. Harlow Banry and Alvis Winn spent a few days vacation in Portland recently. Amethyst Rebekah lodge met on Sept. 16. On the program committee for the meeting were Mrs. Edith Kenyon and Mrs. Madge Dorman. In the attend ance contest, the team led by Mrs. Ruth Lewis is leading that of Mrs. Kenyon by 15 points. Capt. and Mrs. S. W. Kuy kendel and two children are residing in the downstairs apart ment of .the Reed apartment house. Garden club met In W. R. C. hall Sept. 18 commencing with a pot luck dinner. Plans were completed for the Junior garden club flower and vegetable show to be held at the schoolhouse, in the home economics class room, on Sept. 25. Entries will be received between 11:30 and 1:30 and the show will be open for inspection at 2 o'clock. Ribbons will be awarded and also special awards for the most points earned, for various groups. Those entering flowers should furnish their own con tainers. Parents are especially urged to attend for encourage ment in this project. Lexington Volunteers Are Sought For Navy Washington, Sept. 21 (U.F) The navy today began a nation wide recruiting drive for "Lex ington volunteers" in tribute to the men of the aircraft carrier Lexington whicn was lost in the battle of the Coral sea. The drive will end next Sat urday when the new aircraft carrier, U. S. S. Lexington, slides down the ways. During the week the navy will try to enroll 5,000 aviation cadets and 10,000 more bluejackets than are ordinarily inducted during a two-week period. COLONEL TROUBLED, TOO ' A tall, thin lieutenant asked his colonel to make the platoon stop calling him "Legs." ONE-WAY RIDE New York, Sept. 21 (U.R Warren Snyder, a night watch man, took an elevator ride In the building where he is em ployed Saturday night and it lasted 12V4 hours. He drove it past the 15th and top floor, it stopped automatically but con trols and doors automatically locked. The day watchman heard him calling for help yes terday morning and got him out. Snyder was exhausted from shouting all night.
