' Before what li expected .to be the largest opening-game vlcrowd In many years, Medford high's Black Tornado launches Its nine-game grid schedule against the Yreka, (Calif.) Min ers at the stadium tonight. The kicknff is slated for 8:15 sharp. Playing their first game under new coach Lome Arnold, the red and black pikskinners will move against the invaders with only one 1941 regular in their lineup, Clayton Anderson, left guard but with eight other let termen manning positions they ' won during the past two weeks of practice. Arnold sent the squad through a light signal drill last night and reported today that, as a whole, it was in "pretty good physical condition." Bill Bayliss. -fullback, is bothered by a bruis Sjfed heel and Lowell Fleser, right tackle, has a bruised shoulder. Otherwise, the lads are "in the pink." In last night's final workout, the club brushed up on pass de fense, went through kickoff maneuvers, drilled lightly on throwing up a stronger defense for the punter and checked over all its Notre Dame system of fensive plays. In the afternoon Arnold and his quarterbacks had a session on strategy. 1941 Champs Vreka, also playing its first game of the season, will come here an unknown quantity. The Miners, like the locals, are under new coach, Charles Sharpe. and have two regulars returning from the 1941 eleven that cap tured the Siskiyou county cham pionship. They are Bill Slingsby, who will probably carry most of the offensive burden at his left halfback position, and Bruce Thompson, quarterback. t Left half Steve Dippel, state 100-yard dash champion and Bayliss, the converted center, will undoubtedly provide most of the Tornado's attacking fire. Dick Barrett noticed his 27th win of the season in elbowing Seattle to a 5-0 triumph over Oakland. Whitey Hicher pitched Holly wood to a fl-l victory over Port land. (U.R) When Chalky Wright of Los An geles climbs into Madison Square Garden's ring on Sep- tem 23 to defend his 126 pound featherweight crown against Lulu Costantino, it will be the first time Promoter Mike Jacobs staged such a bout since Henry Armstrong wrested the title from Petey Sarron at the Gar den, October 29, 1937. Yet ballyhoo for the heavy weight title clash between Joe Louis and Billy Conn has virtu ally blacked out this bout. Not since the Armstrong era has the 126-pound division boast ed a champion and contender of sufficient class to merit a Gar den main event not until Wright and Constantino came along. Jacobs now believes. however, that this brawl will usher in a brilliant series of feather bouts since the class has more talent now than any other division. (U.R) The promised land was only seven games away for the St. Louis Cardinals today but the magic numeral also signaled the end of the National league pen nant trail for the flqck from Flatbush. Three full games separate the leading Cardinals from the runner-up Brooklyn Dodgers and any combination of lucky "7," St. Louis triumphs or Brooklyn defeats would put the senior league bunting atop Sportsman's park for the first time since 1934 when the Redbirds won the world championship from the Detroit Tigers. Even if the Cardinals, who now have won five in a row and 34 out of their last 40, were only to break even in their remaining eight games, the Dodgers would have to win eight of their last 10 contests to gain a tie. The Cardinals, with some valuable help from the Pitts burgh Pirates, practically buried the Dodgers' remaining hopes yesterday by scoring a ninth inning, 6-4, triumph over the Braves at Boston while Brook lyn bowed, 3-2 to the Pittsburgh- ers at Ebbets field. Five In Ninth Al Javery's effective pitching checked the Cards for eight in nings but they rallied like true champions for five runs in the ninth to pull the game out of the fire. The Cards might have been retired with the score tied at 3-all but for an error by Sibby Sistie whose wild throw to Max West after handling Harry Walk er's roller put St. Louis in front. Walker Cooper opened the rally by beating out a bunt. Javery then walked Johnny Hopp and George Kurowski forced Cooper at third. Pinch- hitter Ray Sanders singled to score Hopp. Ken O Dea pinch- batted a squeeze bunt which scored Kurowski. Ernie Dusak ran for Sanders and Ernie White for O'Dea. Jimmy Brown then forced White. Pee Wee Reese knocked in one run with single and Dixie Walker sent the other over with a double. The Bucs scored all their runs In the first two innings off Ed Head but Max Macon stopped them with two hits the rest of the way. Bob Elliott's pop fly, which fell right on the foul line, gave the Bucs their first-inning run. Sept. 18 (U.R) With the knowledge that Tulane is en route to Los Angeles and will arrive next Tuesday, Jeff Cravath of the University of Southern California became des perate today in his quest for a couple of solid tackles.
