Mayer's $704,425 Stipend Leads 1940 Re port Crosby Does Wei Washington, Sept. 18 U.FD The Treasury disclosed today that tabled Hollywood was tops on the national salary list again in 1940, and placed five men among the highest 10 In the United Slates. At the top of the treasury1 listing was Louis B. Mayer, vice president In charge of produc tion at Loew's Inc., whose stip end was $704,429. He has led the national parade for four straight years. Biggest total shown for any woman in the report was S3M. 800 for screen star Irene Dunne, but this was over a 22-month period, from January 1, 1940, to October 31, 1941. She worked for three different studios, each of which submitted its reports on different fiscal-year bases, and her total could not be com pared with 12-month figures re ported for most individuals. Income of such notables Henry Ford and John D. Rocke feller. Jr., did not show on the treasury breakdown, since such wealthy men receive most of their money from Investments, 775 Over $75,000 All In all. the treasury listed 77$ persons who received $79,000 of more and 62 who re ceived more than $200,000. Closely following Mayer were: Thomas J. Watson, president of International Business Ma chines. Inc.. $946,294. Eugene C. Grace, president. Bethlehem Steel Corp., $478,144. George W. Hill, president, American Tobacco Co., $496,419, Blng Crosby, screen star, $302,314.81 from Paramount Fltcures, Inc., and $190,000 from Universal Pictures Co., Inc., for total of $492,314. Shortage of Labor To Csrb Food Yield Froa Farms is 1643 Chicago, Sept. 18 (U.B The farm weekly Prairie Farmer, citing a survey of four great mldwestern agricultural states, said today that an acute labor shortage would cut 1943 food production seriously and urged the government to Institute a farm labor draft. As a result of the labor short age In Illinois, Indiana, Wiscon sin and Michigan, the newspa per said,, many farmers have been forced to disperse entire dairy herds, others have been forced to reduce their plans for livestock and crop production next year, and some have sold their farms. Of 81 counties studied In the survey, three-fourths were found to be suffering from a shortage of farm funds, the Prairie Far mer said. The newspaper cited as rea sons for the shortage high wages in industry often from five to 10 times a farm hand s wages and the draft.
