Lowry of Bear Creek Orchard have received word that their son Robert Wayne Lowry has been promoted to the rank of captain. He is with the Twin Cities Ordnance plant at Minne apolis, Minn., the second largest small arms and munition plant in America and acts as produc tion officer. Local Visitors Sergeant Wal ter Linnell and Mrs. Linnell and the former's mother, Mrs. Ann unneii or aan iranclsco are visiting at the home of Mrs. Ann Linnell's brother-in-law and sis ter, Mr. and Mrs. K. F. Murray of the Crater Lake highway. Sergeant Linnell is stationed in Alaska with the U. S. army and Is on furlough. To Oakland Miss Joyce Metz- ger of Jacksonville left by bus Saturday to visit at the home of her brother - in - law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Laurence Hankins in Oakland, Cat. Mr. Hankins, who is a former resident of this city, was injured recently in an accident at the Richmond, Cal., shipyards where he is employed as a welder. To Be Speaker J. A. Laux, field director for American Red Cross at Camp White will be guest speaker at the A-A.U W. meeting to be held Saturday at the home of Mrs. Justin Smith, 21 Geneva street at 1:30 p. m. Chaplain Promoted Head quarter of the 91st Infantry Div ision at Camp White announced today the promotion from cap tain to major of Chaplain Ver non P. Jaeger. Cited, to Court John Allen Brittsen of this city was cited to appear in justice court today by state police for failure to stop at a stop sign, and Clair Frank Varney of Jacksonville for having an axle overload Both were arrested yesterday. e Two Cars Hit Bill Rodgers of Butte Falls and Kenneth Knapp of Jacksonville were driving passenger cars last eve ning at 10:10 o'clock which col lided at the intersection of Main and Grape streets according to a report filed. L The Jackson county grand Jury convened today to con sider three or four criminal matters pending before that body. Summer Parker of Ashland, a grand juror, having been called to the military service several weeks ago, C. I. Hutch inson of this city was drawn to fill the vacancy. Other members of the grand jury are: Chester Wendt, Jacksonville, foreman; J. Ludo Grieve, Pros pect; G. F. Brittsan, Medford; Fred Hesselgrave, Medford; W. E. Kerr, Ashland, and Neil H. Franklin, Medford. Among cases expected to be brought before the grand Jury are those of Kermit K. Mans field, Ashland, held under $10.- 000 bonds on a charge of bur glary not in a dwelling, and Charles R. Trescott, Medford. charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Shopping Service Offered Soldiers A shopping service, where men in the army and others in terested may leave orders for the purchase of articles, have them wrapped and mailed, open ed today at 135 South Central avenue. Pearl Standridge and June Hoskins are managing the service. The store will be open from 12 noon until 9 p. m. daily ex cept Sunday. Goods from local stores will be on display in the windows and the shopping ser vice will fill a great need for the army man who is unable to ba in Medford during business hours. All that is necessary is for the shopper to designate the type of item desired, maximum cost, whom the item is for.
