Proud possessors of the top spot In the National league by one full game over the tottering Brooklyn Dodgers after the most magnificent stretch drive in baseball history, the Cards have just an even dozen con tests to play. They must match the Flatbushers who also have only 12 to go victory for vic tory to enter the world series in October. Classification of the Cards' cyclonic drive, which resulted in 30 victories In their last 36 , games, as the most stirring in diamond annals isn't too far- j fetched. Only comparative per- formance with as much dram atic ginger was the drive of the i 1914 Boston Braves from last place in July to first place. Victory In the nightcap of their doubleheader with the Phils, 3-2, gave the Cards first place as the Dodgers dropped a twin-bill to the Reds, 0-3 and 4- 1. The Phils shaded the Cards, 2-1, in the first game. Moore Homers St. Louis fumbled away the first game, allowing the Phils two runs In the ninth, but Terry Moore's homer In the fifth with the score tirt at 2-all won the nightcap. Pace-setters since April 20, the Dodgers garnered only 11 hits in 18 innings while losing to the Reds. Bucky Walters held them to six hits in the opener and helped with his own game by doubling with loaded bases in the fourth. Ray Starr limited the Dod gers to five hits in the nightcap as the Brooklyn defense collap sed. Lew Riggs made three er rors with two out in the fifth to allow the Reds to take a lead they never lost. In other senior league games, the New York Giants defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates, 9-0, and 5- 3 ,as the Chicago Cubs split with the Boston Braves, winning the nightcap 12-8 in eight in nings after losing the opener, 11-8. Yanks Near flag Almost forgotten In the excite ment over, the National league pennant race, the New York Yankees moved to within a sin gle game of their 13th Amer ican league flag by beating the Cleveland Indians, 9-1 and 4-1. Only the Boston Red Sox' twin victories, 8-1 and 8-0, over the White Sox at Chicago prevented the New Yorkers from clinching the flag. Washington split with the Pe trol t Tigers. Early Wynn allow ed eight hits as the Senators won the opener, 8-2, but Hal White gave up only four blows js Detroit took the nightcap, 8-0. - Yesterday's star Relief Pit cher Bill Beckman and Terry Moore of the Cards. Beckman, former Athletics hurler, blank ed the Phils for the last five innings while allowing only three hits after coming in with none out in the fourth. Moore banged out his sixth homer to provide the Cards with the win edge in the second game, 32. The Philadelphia Eagles de feated the Steelers, 24-14, at Pittsburgh and the Chicago Car dinals clipped the Cleveland Rams. 7-0, at Buffalo, N. Y. in exhibition contests, the cham pion Chicago Bears walloped the Redskins, 38-14, at Washington and the Green Bay Packers pum meled the Western Army All Stars, 36-21, at Milwaukee. Angels Near Coast League Flag; Bevos Drop TwoTp Padres By United Press The Los Angeles Angels held a two-game lead today as Pacific Coast league baseball teams headed into the final week of th- regular season. Winning two game from Hollywood, 7-3 and 6-1, the An gels stretched their lead over Sacramento's Solons who drop ped both ends of a doubeheader, to Seattle, 3-1 and 4-2. The Angels meet Sacramento In this week'i series and must win only three games to clinch the title. ' San Diego took over fourth place by winning two games from the Portland Beavers, 9-5 and 4-2, while San Francisco lost twice to the Oakland Acorns, 6-1 and 6-1.
