Warren, de fendants in a government con demnation suit involving. 240 acres of land they formerly owned in the Camp White area. Friday evening were awarded $12,000 for their property by a U. S. district court Jury that de liberated about three hours. The Warren's, represented .by Attorney Charles W. Reames, had asked $22,000 for the land, the government had offered $9, 000. May E. Bowling, represented by Edward C. Kelly, was award ed $300 for 70 acres she form erly owned In the cantonment area, by another trial Jury. The government had offered $260, the defendant had asked $1,100. The Jury was out about one hour. Saturday morning a Jury em paneled for the condemnation suit of tha government versus Esther and B. J.I Palmer, and Ben Dawson, heard opening statements by Attorney Kenneth G. Denman for the defense and Bernard H. Ramsey for the gov ernment. The suit, involving 1.245.5a acres in the Camp White area, will be continued at 10 a. m. Monday. Defendants are asking $12,805.00 for the two tracts of land, the govern ment haa offered $6,020. Empaneled by Judge James Alger Fee to hear the case were the following jurors: George W. Howard, Donald Wilson, Joseph Jones, Weldon Hartley and John L. Detwiler, all of Medford; Frank P. Kurtz of Jacksonville; Harry E. Harding of Trail; U. Grant Davis of Rogue River; Fred Luy of Eagle Point; Aug ust Erickson of Gold Hill and E. H. Harbeck and W. M. Rich ardson, both of Grants Pass. Judge Fee will empanel an other Jury at 9 a. m. Monday to hear the suit of the government versus Walter A. Grant, who, through Attorney Edward C. Kelly is asking $19,000 for 160 acres he formerly owned in the camp area, against the govern ment offer of $9,500. The suit will be heard Tuesday, Um Mill Tribune Want ads. BRYANT AS HEAD Mrs. Minnie Bryant was re elected president of the bi-coun-ty W. C. T. U. organization which met Thursday In thii city with over 50 delegates attend ing from' Grants Pass, Ashland and Medford. Prospect mem bers were unable to attend. Mrs. Ellen Thrasher will serve as vice president; Mrs. Edith Cox, corresponding secretary; Mrs. Noble Stutzman, recording secretary, and Mrs. Paul Byers, treasurer. A trio of Ashland members sang several numbers during the sessions accompanied by Mrs. Thrasher of Grants Pass. Reports were given by the pre sidents of the three societies. All societies reported substantial gifts to the Children's Farm Home at Corvallis which is sup ported by W. C. T. U. Mrs. Thrasher invited all to the state W. C. T. U. meeting which will be held In Grants Pass, October 20-23. The national president, Mrs. Ida B. Wise Smith will be guest speaker at the state con clave. Mrs. Mable Holmes spoke of her work In connection with the Louise Home for Girls. " An in teresting account of temperance work in Ashland In early days was given by Mrs. Lowther of Ashland. Rev. R. W. Coleman of this city and Rev. Noble Stutz man of Grants Pass also spoke briefly. Civilian Defense Activities JEWISH SERVICES There will be a meeting of Defense General training class on bombs at 8 p. m. Monday, September 14, at the Senior High school. All civilian de fense assignments who have not taken the general course are urged to attend. RIZZUTO IN NAVY Norfolk, Va., Sept. 1201.10 Fifth naval district headquar ters announced today that Phil Rizzuto, New York shortstop, had enlisted in the navy and had been ordered to report here for active duty Oct. 10. For the first time In It his tory, Medford witnessed the religious services Friday attend ant on the coming of the Jewish New Year. Over 150 officers, enlisted men and civilians were present. Special trucks were sent out late Friday afternoon to the 91st Division bivouac headquarters to bring men of Jewish faith to the services. Among the guests was Chaplain Johnson, acting post chaplain for Camp White. Chaplain Honlg of the 44th Division conducted the services, chanting parts of the ritual in the custom of cantors since time immemorial. Chaplain Honig was granted special permission by his commander at Fort Lewis to be present at Medford. Ar rangements for the services were under auspices of USO staff member, Richard Meyer, here on special assignment for the Jewish Welfare Board.
