ORGEON, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 1942 $1,300 INCREASE CAMP LAND CASE Increasing by $1,300 the gov ernment's offer of $5,700 for 361 acres of land in the Camp White area formerly owned by Ray Bowen, a U. S. district court trial jury last night returned a verdict that $7,000 was a Ju.il and fair compensation for the property. Bowen, through At torney Edward C. Kelly, had asked $13,000 (or the land. The jury deliberated about two hours. Another trial Jury was today hearing arguments of counsel foi the defense and the government in the condemnation suit of the government versus Ruth and J. P. Warren, who are asking $22 000 for 240 acres in the canton ment area. The government has offered $9,000. The Jury viewed the property yesterday after noon and was expected to have the case late this afternoon. At torney Charles W. Reames is representing the Warren's, Ber nard H. Ramsey and George Codding the government. Another jury was empaneled by Judge James Alger Fee this morning to hear the case or the government versus May E. Bowl ing, "former owner of 70 acres in the camp area. The Jurors are John L, Detwiler, Frank C. Al bert, E. L. Scott, H. F. Piatt, and Etha W. Wall, all of Med ford; Clinton Price, Wolf Creek; August Erickson. Gold Hill; E H. Harbeck and W. M. Richard son, both Grants Pass; Harry E. Harding, Trail; Frank Hens- peter, Jacksonville and U. Grant Davis, Rogue lliver. The defendant la represented by Attorney Kelly. Conrad P. Wessela, associate forester of the U. S. Depart ment of Agriculture, bureau of entomology, has been commis sioned a first lieutenant In the U. S army air force and will leave here Sunday night for Miami Beach, Fla., to enter the Air Forces Officer Training school. Lieutenant Wessela, for the past 10 years, has been In charge of blister rust control work In southern Oregon and northern California, with head quarters In Medford. He will be succeeded here by Douglas R. Miller, an associate forester from California, who has ar rived to assume his new posi tion. Petrillo Forces Program Off Air Cincinnati, O.. Sept. 10 U.PJ The Cincinnati Conservatory of Music has been forced off the air for the first time in nine years by a ruling of James Caesar Petrillo, American Fed eration of Musicians president conservatory officials said- to day. Conservatory officials said Petrillo "has made another move toward dictatorship over the mu sic In the United States" in for bidding the institution's weekly network broadcast on the grounds that non-union musi cians were employed. OKEHS BUSINESS COURSE AT 0. S. C. Portland, Ore., Sept. 10. tll.R) The State board of Higher Education announced today It had approved a "business tech nology" curriculum at Oregon State college after Acting Presi dent F. A. Gilfillan had criti cized the proposed curriculum on grounds it was "unworkable and foredoomed to failure before it starts." The vote was eight to one In favor . of adoption of the new course, with R. W. Ruhl, mem ber of the curriculum commit tee from Medford, voting no. President-Elect A. L. Strand, present at the meetiqg, made no comment. The board In a meeting which lasted well into last night fol lowing a full day of committee sessions, also named P. M. Dunn of Utah State college as per manent dean for the school of forestry at Oregon State, con sidered numerous financial problems, and acted upon a long list of personnel changes. S. envoy touring the Middle East, said today upon his arrival here that he was confident Turkey would maintain her neutrality and would not permit the axis to pass through her territory. Miss Dorothy Daun, 32. and Miss Neil PletranRell, 2S. were raped and slain in a se- uickie Walkouts Ended At 'Frisco , San Francisco, Sept, 10 (U.R) An estimated 750 workers ic turn to their jobs on five wai projects today after "quickie walkouts called in protest against working on a State hoh day without time and one-half overtime pay. The navy announced that the walkouts yesterday were in spired by "puny minority ol labor leaders" and served to de lay work on the projects with out complete stoppage. CONVICTS ESCAPE Yakima, Wash.. Sept. 10. (U.R) Police today sought two Walla Walla, Wash., state peni tentiary inmates who disap peared from the labor camp har vest work camp, 10 miles south of Yakima. State patrolmen said the men were Schuler H. Bucks. 42, and Milton Bergerson, 27 Both men have long criminal records, officers said.
