IB (Delayed) I have Just watched the RAF and the Royal navy smash the luftwaffe in the fiercest and molt dramatic air and sea battle of the war in the west. For seven hours in the blue Skies over Dieppe and on the glassy waters of the channel, prlton and German, airman and seaman, fought for the lives of thousands of American, Canad ian and British soldiers who scrambled ashore this morning to storm the ancient port of Dieppe. ' The result was a decisive Al lied victory. l Its full measure is not 91 aircraft shot down by British pilots and gunners but a long fine of landing craft full of wcarV but triumphant men now pass ing our ship. J They are homeward bound be cause of the magnificent Job done by the little ships and great teamen of the Royal navy and the headlong assaults of pilots of the RAF s Spitfires, Mustangs nd Hurricanes. This combination broke German force of at IcrsV 900 ircraft seeking to blast the Com mandos and infantry into sub mission and sink the armada of Janding craft. Since dawn, when two Focke Wolf ISO's darted at us with tnachineguns and cannon chat tering, this tiny craft and every pther ship have been bombed and strafed reptatedly and have blazed back at the enemy J Dawn Patrol , Our motor launch, which Is bout 100 feet long, left a (southern port last night, escort ing tank landing craft. The jnoon was sinking toward the horizon as England dropped as tern and the ghostlike line of Vhlpt headed for France and the pnemy. . As it grew light we discovered 'scores of other ships destroy 'crs, motor gunboats, lighters. Assault craft and f -ausseurs of the fighting French navy all converging on Dieppe. J The first commandos landed jttt we neared the French coast. I RAF bombers had sneaked across the channel to hammer ''German gun positions. Ahead .antiaircraft fire spurted In fountains of red tracer bullets. Across the water we heard the Vumbling crump, crump of big ibombs. f As the light brightened we saw six Spitfires flying high overhead. We were still admir ing them when there was a roar of planes to port and two 'Focke-Wolfs attacked our con 'voy. I They swept over us with every gun firing, and ours answering theirs. One climbed out of the 'barrage, a second wavered and icliri Into the sea. ( We steamed through the amoke and in the early sunlight 'aaw the burning houses of Jieppc and heard the rattle of .rifle fire and the chatter of machineguns. Obituary Robert Dale passed away at the home, of his son In Tacoma, Washington, August 18, 1942, at the age of 30 years. Mr. Dale was born In Duran go, Colorado, on March 2, 1892. He made his home there until 1927 when he moved to South ern Oregon. He was married to Miss Alemeda McRee Sangster November 17, 1912. To this union were born two daughters and one son. During the construction of Camp White he was employed as a welder at the camp. Mr. Dale went to Tacoma' Just recently to receive medical at tention. He Is survived by his wife, Mrs. Robert Dale of Med ford; his bother. Mrs. Sophie Dale of prants Pass, Oregon; two daughters, Mrs. H. C. Holley of Fort Jones, Calif., and Mrs. J. D. Cheney of Medford, Ore gon, and one son. Richard Dale of Tacoma, Washington. Three sisters, Mrs. Ellen Gabchart of Grants Pass, Mrs. T 1. V. - A rinlln flrtl". do, ana Mrs. jaa i nomas oi Salem, and two grandsons. Funeral services will be held at the Perl Funeral Home Fri day at 2 p. m. Interment will be at the Jacksonville Cemetery. The Christian Science Church will officiate. the appraised value will be con sidered. Each bid must be sub mitted in duplicate and be ac companied by a deposit. The deposit will be returned to unsuccessful bid ders; applied as part of the pur chase price of the successful bidder; or retained as liquidated damages if the successful bidder shall not execute contract and furnish satisfactory bond within 30 days of the acceptance of the bid. A bond on all sales will be required in an amount computed at the rate of at least 20 per cent of the first $10,000 of the bid, plus 10 per cent of any addition al amount of the bid in excess of $10,000.
