SOCIETY and CLUB NEWS of the WEEK BY BETTY SHOEMAKER 'Afternoon Tea Honors Hayes Sisters Tuesday An afternoon tea at the real' denee of Dr. and Mrs. James C. Hayes, 839 East Main street, Tuesday - afternoon announced the betrothal of their daughter, Miss Patricia, to George Curtis Smith of Pasadena, Cal., and welcomed another daughter Miss Mary to Medford from St Louis, Mo., where she has been employed at Washington univer sity. The approaching marriage of Miss Patricia will be an event of September 8. The bride elect craduated from St. Mary s aca demy - in this city, attended Marylhurst college at Oswego and University of Washington coaching school at Seattle where she took a secretarial course. She has been employed as den tal assistant in the office of Dr. Walter HoDDe. Technical Sergeant Smith has been stationed at the Medford municipal airport for the past year and a half with the u. army air corps. He graduated from Loyola, California high school, attended University of Southern California and took a special course In safety engineer ing at the University of Pitts burg extension school in Los Angeles. Miss Mary has been employed In the social service department of Washington university clinics and allied hospital in St Louis. She has been specializing In medical social work at Washing ton university for her master's degree. About 73 guests called during the afternoon and assisting the hostess Mrs. Hayes, were Mrs. Nell Collins and Mrs. Murrey Gardner. Mrs. G. M. Roberts, Mrs. T. E. Daniels, Mrs. Charles Lemery and Mrs. J. C. Mann presided at the service table. Miss Dorothy and Mist Virginia Hayes also assisted. Pink and white table decora tions were used throughout the rooms. The dining table was centered with a large wedding cake topped with a miniature bride and soldier and tiny cards announced the approaching wed ding date. A wreath of pink snap dragons was arranged at the base of the cake and a large bowl of gladioli centered the buffet Lighted white tapers and pink gladioli were arranged on either side of the table center piece. Mrs. Walsh Is Hostess To Newcomers Mrs. Margaret Walsh of Talent entertained a group of friends at her home last Friday evening honoring Sergeant and Mrs. Raymond S. Dlllard. Sergeant DUlard Is now stationed at Camp White, having been transferred here from Fort Bliss, Texas. The social gathering was a shower for Mrs. DUlard who re ceived many gifts and later sing ing, games and refreshments were enjoyed. Friends Honor Mrs. Mildred Scott Friends and relatives railed at the residence of Mrs. Mildred Scott, 18 South Columbus ave nue Thursday afternoon in cele bration of her 07th birthday an niversary. She has resided In this city lor many years. Mrs. Scott received many gifts, among them a decorated btrth day cake from Donald and Ron ald McCoy. Assisting during the afternoon were Mrs. Scott's daughter. Mrs. lone Bellows and her granddaughter, Mildred Scott. 'Adair Home Scene Of Shower Mrs. Charles Adair was hostess to store employes of M. M. De partment store Wednesday eve ning at the Adair home on West Main street when the group hon ored Miss Delia Mae Dale with a bridal shower. Visiting and re freshments were enjoyed. Law- nee of 1017 West Main street announce the betrothal of their daughter, Miss Shirley, to Ray Sims, son of Mr. s.vl Mrs. H. A. Sims of 41 Ross court. The mar riage will be an event of Sep tember 13. News of the approaching mar rlage was told a small group of inends at a dinner Wednesday evening at the Lawrence home. Rosebuds marked the covers for the guests and tiny white enve lopes decorated with wedding bells and rings contained the news and approaching wedding date. The centerpiece was an ar rangement of pastel lilies, bridal wreath, fern and tapers. Miss Lawrence Is a graduate of Medford high school and em ployed at F. W. Woolworth com pany. Mr. Sims, also a graduate of Medford high school, attended Oregon State college at Corvallis and is employed at Trowbridgo and Flynn Electric store. Ice Cream Social Is Well-Attended Over 60 persons enjoyed an Ice cream social on the rear lawn of the Zlon English Lutheran church Wednesday evening. Members of the Luther League under the chairmanship of Miss Marian Borg. provided the enter tainment with the Women's Mis sionary society In charge of re freshments. The program Included a num. ber of arrordian selections by the Misses rhoebe Swem and Dor othy Hanson, a reading by Miss iieorgina i honipson and games sponsored by the league. Ncff residence. North Berkeley Way Wednesday after noon and elected Mrs. Irene San ders chairman with Mrs, Jane Lague as co-chairman. Lunch eon was served followed by an afternoon of visiting. Among members of the club are two nurses, a stenographer, foreign language teacher, dancing in structor, photographer, two home economics teachers and a pianist, a variety of talents. Any soldier's wife interested in Joining the group is Invited to the next meeting to be held August 19 at 10 a. m., at the USO. Box luncheon will be served at 12 noon with tea or punch to be provided. Children will be cared for at the Jackson County playground, across Bear Creek bridge on West Alain street with no charge. Plans for the next meeting In clude plans for better organiza tion of the club and participa tion In many activities. A dis cussion of scheduled activities will include a sewing circle to specialize in layettes, a series of nutrition talks. Little Theatre, and out-door sports Including horseback riding, ice skating and hiking. Attending the out-dbor gather ing Wednesday were the Mes dames Irene Sanders. Former Medford Man Weds Eugene Girl In Portland The marriage of Miss Theresa Kelly, daughter of Mrs. Harry J. Kelly of Portland and W. Dolph Janes of Eugene, son of Mrs. Harris Janes of this city, was read the evening of August 1 at 8 o'clock in the Grace Memo rial Episcopal church In Port land by the Rev. John Rich ardson. The bridal party entered the church, which was decorated with white gladioli palms and lighted tapers while Mrs. H. B. Rose played the traditional wed ding march. Mrs. Charles Duthie sang Grieg's "I Love Thee" and Bohm's "Calm as the Night." The bride chose a wedding dress of white satin fashioned with sweetheart neckline and long sleeves and a train. A veil of net edged with lace fell in a long train from a coronet of pearls. She carried a white prayer book and white orchids from which hung streamers tied with bouvardia. Mrs. Matthew Kelly of Port land, sister-in-law of the bride. was matron of honor. She wore pink chiffon with a small match ing veil. Dolores - Richardson, flower girl, also wore pink chif fon with a pink coronet in her hair. Harris Janes of this city was best man for his brother and ushers were Matthew Kelly and Dr. William Barnum. Mrs. Kelly, mother of the bride, wore a pink gown with aqua marine accessories and a corsage of gardenias. The bride groom's mother, Mrs. Janes, chose a pursuit blue gown wun coral and accessories oi DiacK Her corsage was coral begonia. A reception followed at the home of the brides momer, where the wedding cake, topped with a wedding bell, was first cut by the bride. White flow ers and tapers completed the arrangement. Pouring were Mrs. Harold Gregg and Mrs. N. Von Hinkle, cousins of the bride. Assisting about the rooms were Miss Peggy Sweeney, Mrs. Dwight Hedges, Mrs. Joe Bish op, and Miss Nell Patrick, Mrs. Walter Browne of Portland and Miss Stephanie Peterson of Eu gene. Among wedding guests were Mrs. Dolph Phipps, Mrs. Janes and Harris Janes of this city, Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Fields, for mer Medford residents, and Dr. and Mrs. William Barnum of Portland. Following a wedding trip to the coast the couple Is residing In Eugene. Mrs. Janes graduat ed from University of Oregon where she was affiliated with Delta Delta Delta social sorority and Phi Beta and Pie Lambda Theta honorarles. She is active In music circles in Eugene. Mr. Janes attended University of Oregon also and is affiliated with Sigma Alpha Episilon fra ternity. He is production man ager for radio station KORE at Eugene. Swim Party At Leverette Home Daughters of Job and mem bers of the council were enter tained Wednesday evening with a barbecue and swimming nartv at the Walter Leverette home on the south Pacific high way. Mr. Leverette opened the swimming pool to members of the younger set and prepared hamburgers for the group on his new grill. Later dancing and a short business session was enjoyed with Miss Natalie Parker, hon ored queen. Dean of Jacksonville Star route, to Dr. Lewis Duncan Clark of Port land, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Clark of Farmington, Wash. The wedding will be an event of September 5 at 4 p. m. In the Congregational church at Eugene. The couple will reside in Portland where he is asso ciated with the University of Oregon Medical school as direc tor of the Crippled Children's Division. Miss Dean Is a graduate of University of Oregon where she was a member of Alpha Delta Pi. She has been employed in the Clackamas county Public Welfare Commission. Dr. Clark graduated from University of Utah and the University of Ore gon -Medical School and con tinued his graduate work in Pediatrics in Chicago. He was affiliated with Pi Kappa Alpha social fraternity and a member of Phi Beta Pi medical hon orary. Bridal Shower By S. F. Club For Member Members of the S. Martha Spatz Entertains Group Martha Spatz- entertained members of the Degree of Honor Juvenile club at her home on South Oakdale avenue Thursday afternoon with a lawn party. A short business session was held with Shirley Pankey as presi dent. Donald Crowell was given the password as a new member and Betty Jean and Mary Joan Kidwell were announced as new members. Present were three guests. La- Vella and Arvella Long and Bobby Griffith. The group en Joyed croquet and fish pond dur ing the afternoon with Lawrence Jagger winning the croquet prize. It was announced that many children are participating In the purchase of war bonds and stamps. A watermelon feed closed the afternoon with Mrs. H. G. Wilson, director, being as sisted by Sarah Fredrickson. The next meeting will be September i 19. Zonta Mombars Enjoy Picnic Zonta members enjoyed a picnic Monday evening at the home of Mrs. Tom Gifford. Sojourner Club Meeting Enjoyed By Members, Guests Medford Sojourner! gathered at the Girls' Community club house Thursday afternoon for a social meeting with Mrs. Royal Clare as chairman of the com mittee, assisted by Mrs. Edwin Andren, Mrs. Robert Ditewig and Mrs. Charles Beattte. Bridge, pinochle and sewing were enjoyed with Mrs. R. R. Stroud holding high score at bridge and Mrs. Sue Alexander second. Mrs. Gordon Bell, Mrs. Charles Emerlck and Mrs. C. M. Virtue received prizes at pin ochle and sewing. Mrs. C. B. Erbacher, club member who is moving to Santa Cruz, Cal., was presented a fare well gift from the club. Guests were Mrs. Stella Davidson. Mrs. Alexander and Mrs. Helen Ab bott. Prospective members Intro duced included Mrs. Thomas Littleton of Providence, R. I., Mrs. C. M. Virtue of San Fran cisco. The annual club picnic, which is to be an event of August 22, will be held at Jackson Hot Springs and will be attended by club members and their house guests. Those planning to at tend are asked to contact Mrs Kenneth Fitzgerald, 4788 for re servations and information con cerning the picnic food. Mem bers are asked to bring their own service and sugar. Double Eight Club At Adair Residence Mr. and Mrs. Charles Adair entertained the Double Eight club Sunday evening in the gar den of their home on West Main street. The tables were gay with mid-summer flowers and steaks were broiled on the out door fireplace. The occasion also celebrated the birthday anniversary of Mrs. Maynard Bush, who was sur prised with a birthday cake and handkerchief shower. Attending were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Gray, Mr. and Mrs. May nard Bush, Mrs. Lulu Sauls berry, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Burk, Dr. and Mrs. E. G.
