The South Dakotan will suc- ceed J. Russell Acheson, who re cently entered citizens' pilot ..training. Acheson, basketball 'eosch for four years, was nar ed -football and track mentor when 'Lieutenant Bill Bowerman was ' called to t rtive duty last winter, a nc although his track team cap tu ed the state championship last spring he entered cltuens pilot training without ever having handled the Black Tornado foot ball squad. Arnold's appointment to guide the destinies of Tiger athletic teams for the ensuing school year climaxed a two weeks' period of negotiations between local school heads and coaches who might have been available for the local position. One of these was Or ville (Red) Bailey, present Marsh- field high mentor, but he was eliminated as a possibility when hit school board refused to re- leas him from his present con tract. Hedrick pointed out that many boards were reluctant to release coaches at this time. Record Strong The new coach comes here with a brilliant record, not alone as a coach but as an athlete him self. His Yankton college bas ketball team last year captured the South Dakota college confer ence championship with 18 vic tories and three defeats; then en tered the national Intercollegiate tournament at Kansas City where It lost in the first round to High Point. N. C. college, 44 to 37 In an overtime contest. Ar nold's 1843 track team also won the conference title, and his 1941 football eleven placed sec ond. During the 1940-41 season, un der Arnold's mentoring. Yankton college's football and track teams copped the conference champion ships, and his cagers wound up in third place. Thus, in two years at Yankton, he turned out two track championships, one basket ball and one football title team. Prior to going to Yankton col lege Arnold coached basketball, football and track at Wessington bprtngs, (S. D.) high school from 1832 to 1937. his grid teams there enjoying a string of 23 games without defeat. From 1937 to 1940 he was director of physi cal education and football coach at Yankton high school, and in two of those three years his elevens won state champion- amps. Arnold is a 1927 graduate of Mitchell, (S. D.) high school, at tended South Dakota State col lege for a year and a half and was graduated from Dakota VVes leyan university at Mitchell in 1932. He received his master s degree in physical education in 1939, from the University of Iowa. . While attending Dakota Wes leyan he was all-conference full back, a member of the all-confer enc basketball team and high point man in the conference track meet his last two vears. captaining the basketball and track teams his last year in school. In 1940 Arnold was pres Ident of the South Dakota Health and Physical Education associa tlon. and In 1941 was president of the Yankton Kiwanis club. GERMAN SHEPHERD PETSHOWWINNER The Jackson County Sheriffs rosse presents at the fair grounds park tonight its sec ond showing of the rodeo and horse show, sponsored in con nection with the activation of the 91st Infantry Division at Camp White, which took place Saturday morning. The pro gram will start at 8:30 sharp On the rodeo program will tj several events involving wild bucking horses and Brahma bull riding, with many of the Pa cific coast's leading bronc-bust-ers and cowhands competing for the long list of prizes offered. The horse show program will include a drill by the 91st divi sion mounted drill team, a jump ing Aass with 91st division of ficers participating, five-gaited horse class, walking-horse class and family class. CRATERS PLAYING The Medford Craters face the Klamath Falls Pelicans at Klam ath Falls this afternoon in the second game of their two-game series climaxing the Oregon-California league's 24-game sched ule. The contest is scheduled to start at 2:30. Prior to last night's series opener, the Craters enjoyed a two-tilt bulge on the Pelicans in the loop pennant race. A victory in either of the two games will give the locals the championship, while two wins for Klamath will tie them with Medford. NEW YORK. Y:, Aug. 15 (JP) Ben Hogan eased his blistering golfing pace today but even a third-round two-over par 72 failed to dislodge the slender Texan's five-stroke lead in the $5,000 Times-Union open. Hogan, who compiled a 64 and 68 in his first two rounds, hit the three-quarter mark in the tourney with a six-under par 204, five strokes better than the 209 of handsome Craig Wood, Mamaroneck, who shot a great 67 today, and Harold (Jug) McSpaden, Philadelphia who turned in a 72. Hogan, the game's leading money winner who seems almost certain to add the 81,000 top prize to his earnings at the tour ney's end tomorow, toured the first nine today in regulation figures. Coming in, however, he bogied the 586-yard par 5 thirteenth and the 462-yard par 4 seventeenth. URN, ACE OE POLO BACKS DIES OF HEM ATTACK New York, Aug 15 (JP) Devereux Milburn, 61 generally regarded as the greatest back ever developed in polo fell dead of a heart attack on the ninth tee at the Meadow Brook Golf club late today For the 21 years the handicap rankings made him the greatest player in the world, listing his handicap at nine goals from 1908 through 1917 and at 10, the sport's highest, for 12 years. He started in polo as a 17- year-old youth at Buffalo where his father permitted him to Join the latter's club because it didn't have enough players for a scrimmage. From then on he was an out. standing player, helping Henry Payne Whitney bring the famed Westchester cup to the United States from England for the first tme in 1909. Milburn was credited with revolutionizing the back's play by leaving the post, previously regarded as a purely defensive position and joining in the hard riding, another contribution of 1909 United States big four.
