I by the Blst Division in World war I will be presented Saturday to the new 91st Infantry Division by the man who captured it F. K. Dover, Grants Pass veteran of the historic Wild Weat fighting unit. The sun. a German service rifle corresponding to the U. S army's 30-calibre rifle, is said to have killed the first 91st di vision soldier to fall on the field of battle. Victim of the Ger man sniper was Pvt. Lee Gautshe, a runner dispatched by Dover, then first sergeant of company I, 362 Infantry. The ; gun was captured by Dover, who stormed the sniper's point of vantage and killed him a few "minutes after Gautshe had fal len. '- Carved on the stock of the gun are seven notches, appar '-ently representing the number of men who had fallen before the German sniper's fire, but ,-the German never lived to add Pvt. Gautshe to the record. " Sergeant Dover was wounded In .his charge against the sniper's position, but succeeded In kill ing the gunman who was delay ing the progress of company I tin its assault against German .'machine gun nests. 4 Dover, a leader in Oregon war veterans activities, was awarded two Silver Stars and the Croix 'de Guerre for valor and lntre pedity beyond the call of duty during his service "with the 91st in France and Belgium. He is the possessor of a Military Order of the Purple Heart medal, con ferred upon American soldiers who received wounds in battle. In announcing that the Ger man weapon would be presented to the new "Powder River" di vision to be activated Saturday. ex-Sergeant Dover expressed the hope that many of his "buddies" would attend Activation day ceremonies which will effect a reunion of veterans of the AEF Blst. Dodge, suffered a fracture at some time prior to his death in a hospital here last night, Wayne County Coroner .Edmund J. Knobloch said today. Dr. Knobloch emerged from an autopsy to make the bare an nouncement, then returned to the post mortem room. Police Inspector John O. Five Take Contract Construction was actually be gun late In February, with the prime contract awarded to a syndicate of five companies, namely, Ford J. Twalts company of Los Angeles, Morrison-Knud- sen company of Boise, Idaho, Peter Kiewet and Sons of Oma ha, Nebraska, The Sound Con struction company of Seattle and The Griffith company of Los Angeles. First concrete was poured March 11 of this year and since then the job has stayed ahead of schedule throughout its con struction. At the peak of con struction early in July, many thousand workmen were em ployed. It is understood that construction is now substanti ally complete, except for a few minor phases. Major. Bean had words of praise for all members of the area engineer's office, including Captain Byron E. Doll, execu tive and engineering officer; First Lieutenant William A. Jones, property officer and Cap tain Lin Shields, who was in the engineer's office during a great deal of the construction period and who since has been appointed post engineer at Camp White, his function being to maintain and operate the utili ties of the camp. Cited by General "All these men had a great deal to do with the successful construction of the camp," Major Bean said, as did civilian personnel who were exception ally loyal and Industrious." In recognition of the excellent Job done by Major Bean in rush ing the completion of the camp Major General Charles H. Ger hardt, commander of the 91st division, has recommended that he be promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel. The Medford-Klamath Falls area is under the direction and directly responsible to the Port land district engineer, Colonel Donald J. Lechey. TRU-MIX GETS CONTRACT FOR SEVEN DEVILS ROAD Salem, Aug. 14. (F Con tract for grading and oiling 5.99 miles of the Seven Devils chrome mine access road west of Coquille was awarded today by the State Highway commis sion to the Tru-Mix Concrete Co., Medford, on a low bid of $34,034. AFTER LONG ILL Portland, Aug 14 (P) Death took Sam Brown, the Ger- vais farmer who became one of Oregon's most colorful politi cians, at a hospital late yester day. . ' Virtually unknown by his full name, Samuel Henry Brown, he died after an extended illness at 68 He was a longtime member of the State Legislature, as rep resentative in the 1913 and 1917 sessions and as senator from 1923 to 1933. Twice, in 1934 and 1938, he sought the Republican nomina tion for governor, but it was his 1936 campaign against Charles L. McNary for the GOP sena torial nomination that perhaps ittracted the most attention. He stumped the state with '$40 and a Ford" and when his 'our was threatened by depleted funds he said, "I'll walk if I must." Many voters came to his aid with contributions of gaso line.
