SOLDIER MORALE IN PRACTICAL WAY i 1 Field Director Cites Case of ; Camp White Recruit 1 Aids For Service Men The bara announcement "Red Crou headquarters are estab lished at Camp White- Soldiers desiring assistance, contact, etc found an Inconspicuous place on the Camp White bulletin board one day this week. The last (our words of that no tice, however, were far from in conspicuous in the heart of Pvt. John Doe, (name withheld by re quest) the first Camp White sol' dier to ask Red Cross aid. ' Hit story as related by Field Director Joseph Laux, in a prime example of how the Red Cross operates how It co-oper ates with the military in practi cal morale building and how ef ficiently a nationwide system works. Homesick Soldier John Doe was a homesick sol dier. In Camp White for less than a week, finding the transi tion from civilian to military life a trifle besetting, the young man found it all a bit too much when ha received a letter from home telling of the illness of a young T brother. On the verge of going A. W. ,0 L., he heard the Red Cross an nouncement, decided to give it .a whirl. He talked with Mr. Laux on Friday afternoon, unburdened himself and left with the asur- ance that everything would be all right and that undoubtedly ha would be granted a furlough by the military authorities and his fare home advanced by the Bed Cross If It was found neces sary that he return home. 1 Mr. Laux Immediately dis patched a wire to the Red Cross .branch in Pvt Doe's home town. Saturday morning came a reply that John Doe's family lived '.al miles Inland in the moiMtains and that it would take until Monday for a complete report to be obtained. Monday morning the follow ing wire was received by Direc tor Laux: "Pvt. Doe's brother Is not ser Mously 111. Enclosure following 'doctor's report. . Family lived ;157 miles interior. Mountainous t country. Drove as far as road 'would permit Impossible from J that point Called Forest Rang er station. Dlspat.'hed man from -that point who walked 10 miles through thick woodland Talked 'with family. They all well and ' happy. No need fcr Pvt. Doe at ' present. Complete report fol , lows." i All this took place between ' Friday afternoon and Monday ' morning. Pvt. Doe Is happier now. Not worried about his family, he is . responding to army life in a nor ' ma) manner. This case multiplied a thous " and-fold Is the partial story of ' the American Red Cross field of fices. Other services of the organlza i tion include free legal advice, advancement of money for sick ness In the family, small loans ' for various necessities, helpful advice about perscnal problems and all that goes into the mak ing of a good soldier.
