An? 13 President Roosevelt wanted more facts and figures today before he would comment on press conference questions which referred to "wildcat" strikes in war industries, to lagging war production, und to possible re medial action. ' The president said he had not even heard that a west coast conference on stabilization of wages in aircraft plants had blown up, with the understand ing that it would convene this month in Washington. A report er told him the conference had failed to meet here because the administration had failed to establish a wage policy. Promises Inquiry "What would you think of a union steward in a war plant", a reporter Inquired, "who deliber ately told a man to produce less than a fair day's work?" Who did that,' the president wanted to know. After he was told it had happened in Flint and Muskegon, Mich., he suggested that his questioner dig up the facts and names and he would look into the matter. Another newsman wanted to know his opinion of "various wildcat strikes occurring almost daily;" although they are op posed by international officers of unions. Where? The president coun tered. . "Well, there was one yester day in a Pittsburgh steel mill," Mr. Roosevelt was told. When the president inquired the name of the mill, the report er said he thought it was a unit of Carnegie-Illinois. Make a note of that, the presi dent directed his press secretary, Stephen Early. That, too, will be looked up, he added. "Seriously," his interrogator remarked, "there are a large number of wildcat strikes. Haven't they come to your atten tion?" Heard of Few Ha had heard of a few, the president replied, but he said he thought a few more facts were needed. Mr, Roosevelt said at that point that from reading some newspapers, about six months ago,, the impression would have prevailed at the time that 75 per cent of muni tions plants, were on strike whereas, he said, actually only per cent, or perhaps it was one half of one per cent, were on strike. "Have you seen a war labor board statement that laws of treason might have to be resort ed to in the situation?" was the next question. After he was informed it was two weeks ago, he asked that a copy be obtained for him and a reporter promised to sup ply It. To a question whether there was anything he could say on a possible shut down of 1,000 war plants because of material short ages, Mr. Roosevelt replied he would have to ask the army, navy, and war production chair man Donald M. Nelson before he could authenticate the report. Second Party Held for Negro Troops al Carpenter Home The second and final party for colored troops at Camp White, sponsored by the Jackson county Recreation committee in co operation with the USO, was given at the "Topsides" home of Mr. and Mrs. A. S. V. Carpenter yesterday evening. With Harris Janes acting as master of ceremonies, the party program included community singing directed by Mrs. LeRoy Jensen, with Miss Dorothy Wilder at the piano; vocal num bers by Mrs. Royal Bebb, accom panied by Roger Wolfe and by Philip Henselman, who accom panied himself at the piano; a game which brought prizes con tributed by Fluhrer's bakery; a mock track meet directed by Miss Verlinda Silva of the USO and an amateur contest with prizes for the winners. Refreshments for the enjoy able party were furnished by Snider's dairy, the Medford hotel and Franklin's cafe. Hotel Installs Luggage Lockers Public lockers for the safe keeping of parcels and luggage have been installed at the Jack son hotel to complete the exten sive remodeling program, ac cording to Cedric Reaney, man ager. The lockers are located In a convenient place where - they may be used by local people or travelers. New Lounge Open At Hotel Jackson Medford's newest cocktail lounge, located in the Hotel Jackson, was opened to the pub lic this week. The new entertainment center is complete with a modern bar with all new equipment and red leather lounge seats along one wall. Meredith, commanding officer, Camp White. This rule is dictated by the fact that soldiers' mail inevit ably contains military informa tion. "Correspondence" or "Pen Clubs" make it possible for im proper persons to assemble such information. Reiterations of the ban on promiscuous correspondence by 9th Service Command, followed publicity on the formation of clubs whose members were pledged to write to soldiers, one of which urged its members to obtain lists of soldiers names from newspapers. While the good will of particular organi zations was not questioned, it as suggested that members limit their correspondence to members of the armed forces who are relatives and friends. E Donald H. Steinmetz of Gold Hill, charged with operating an auto with four in the front seat was fined $2.50 and cuais in jus tice court yesterday. He was driving around the streets of Gold Hill with another youth and two girl friends. Clarence E. Miller of Ashland was fined $2.50 and costs for operating an overloaded truck; Fred N. Miller $10 and costs for having no PUC permit; Fred N Stevens, Rt. 3, $1.50 and costs for no rear view mirrow, and Lorls N. McVay $1.50 and costs for no chauffeur's license, and $10 and costs for an overload on a truck. MATH ALIENS IN FBI ROUNDUP Portland, Aug. 12. W) Fed eral Bureau of Investigation agents said today that yester day's raids in the Klamath Falls area netted 11 aliens and quan tities of dynamite, blasting caps, rifles, shotguns, revolvers, cam eras and shortwave radios.
