HELD Party Is Farewell For League Member Twenty-five young people of the Wesley league of the Metho dist church gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank ranger. Jr., Tuesday evening as a farewell to Merle Dietrich who expects to enter the armed forces soon. The affair also cele brated the birthday anniver saries of Franklin Fanger and Harold Gwyther. The evening was spent play ing games on the lawn of the Fanger garden and supper was served by Miss Jean Gwyther, Miss Avonne Rae, Mrs. Dietrich and Mrs Fanger Present were the Misses Adabee and Lucille Seller. Mr and Mrs. Austin Cor liss. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Gwy ther, Miss Patricia Short, the Misses Avonne and Vera Rae, Larry Swarner, Douglas Pickell, Miss Margery Feller, Lawrence and Bill Ousterhout, Miss Ruth Cuffel, Miss Pauline Chandler, Chester Roentgen. Picnic Is Given For Club Members Members of the Business and Professional Women's club of Medford were entertained at a picnic Thursday evening of last week at the home of Mrs. Eva Judd, 831 Minnesota street. Games and cards were played following dinner with prizes go ing to Mrs. Hazel Swayne and Mrs. Mary Porter. Fourteen members and one guest, Mrs. Aileen Rogers formerly of At lanta, Ga., and now a Medford resident, were present. Hostesses for the evening were Mrs. Judd, Mrs. Irean Grlgsby and Mrs. Zola Sims. f Medford Woman Leave For San Diego Trip Mrs. C. W. Massie left Friday for San Diego, Calif., where she will visit her husband who is stationed there with the Tenth Defense Battalion of the U. S. Marines. Mrs. Massie was ac companied by her husband's mother, Mrs. C. H. Massie of Grants Pass. They are to re main in the south a week. . t - Helen Herbert Hera For Vacation Visit Miss Helen Herbert is in Med' ford to spend several days at the home of her mother. Mrs. s. M. Herbert, Route 4. Miss Herbert has been attending the Univer sity of California, Berkeley, where she is studying designing and draftsmanship for ship building. Miss Herbert will re turn to Berkeley next week. Church Circle Plans Meeting On Tuesday Fidelity Circle of the Metho dist church will meet Tuesday, August 11, at 1 p. m. at the home of Mrs. L. N. Younger, 611 W. Eighth street. A covered dish picnic dinner will be served on the lawn. Members attending are asked to bring their own service. Visitors are cordially Invited to attend. San Francisco Girl Guest At Tumy Horn Miss Audry Brugger of San Francisco spent the past week end in Medford as a guest of Miss Deborah Tumy at the home of Miss Tumy's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Tumy, 705 Park street. Miss Brugger is a daughter of Major and Mrs. Ern est J. Brugger of San Francisco. Meeting Date Changed By Baptist Auxiliary The Ladies' Auxiliary of the First Baptist church will hold the monthly evening meeting August 25 instead of August 11 as originally announced. The meeting will be at the home of Mrs. James Owen, Siskiyou Heights. Jacksonville Club To Picnic Wednesday Members of the Jacksonville Home Economics club will hold the annual picnic Wednesday, August 12. Members will meet at the Grange hall at 12 noon from where they will motor to the Cantrall home on the Applegate river for the picnic dinner. Sgt. M aruyama of Medford Marries Word was received In Medford this week of the marriage of Sgt. Kazuo R. Maruyama, for merly of this city and now sta tioned ' with the headquarters sr.tiad of the Second Air Force, Ft. . George Wright, Spokane. Sgt. Maruyama was married July 26 in Spokane to Miss Art Numoto of that city. Sgt. Maruyama, a son of Mrs. M. Maruyama, Is well known in Medford, having graduated from the local high school and having been associated with the Pacific Fruit company for some time before enlisting in the air force. Ensign Squires Leaves For Alaskan Station Ensign Robert Squires left by plane Friday morning for Seat tle from where he will go to Alaska to take up his duties as assistant supply officer at one of the U. S. naval stations. While here Ensign Squires and Mrs. Squires were guests of Mrs. Squires' parents, Mr. and Mrs. V. D. Brophy at their home. Mrs. Squires will remain in Medford for a month. Braleys Spend Week Vacationing at Lake Mr. and Mrs. C. Reese Braley returned Sunday from Diamond Lake where they spent a week's vacation. The Braleys made daily horseback trips into the hills surrounding the lake while on the vacation. ' CALENDAR Monday "B:30 p. m. Olympia, Aug. 8 (JP) Pros ecutor John S. Lynch Jr., of Thurston county said today a Fort Lewis soldier was being held and two others were being sought in connection with the kidnaping and raping of a 31- year-old ChehaMs widow. Lynch said the woman was driving home when she was ab ducted and attacked. The prose cutor said she stopped at an Olympia restaurant about 1:30 a. m., and that when she came out and entered her car again three soldiers also climbed in. Th soldiers said they were "going along.' Lynch said, and the woman believed she would be safe with three of them in the car so didn't object to the way they invited themselves into the machine. Near Tenino, about 15 miles south of here and halfway to Chehalis. the soldiers shoved the woman out of the driver's seat. however, and drove off the Pa cific highway onto the prairie. Each soldier attacked the woman, according to the story she told Lynch, and tore all her clothing off except a blouse and shoes. They broke her glasses, took the car and left her on the prairie. She tried to get help at farm houses but failed. Nearly nude she made her way back about 5 a. m. to the highway where a man and a woman and a boy in a car on a camping trip took her home. She returned here several hours later to report to Lynch. Officers going to the scene of the attack found her glasses and a soldier's hat. From the name in It they arrested a soldier at Fort Lewis. Beck, Jacksonville school superintendent for the past five years, announced yesterday his resignation in order to accept a position as principal of the Can by Union high school. Beck will be succeeded as Jacksonville school superintend ent by Warren Adams, indus trial arts teacher in the high school for the past two years. Beck is a graduate of Southern Oregon college of Education and the University of Oregon, and re ceived his masters' degree at Stanford university. He will leave for Canby August 16, and will be followed soon after by his wife. GRIDSTER JOINS POLICE Portland, Aug. 8 (JP) Joe Wendlick, Oregon State college football end two years ago, was sworn in yesterday as a mem ber of the Portland police de partment.
