The Green Fir Tree sleeves insignia made famous by the first "Wild West Division" in World War I is being seen in increasing num bers at this Agate Desert camp where the 6 1st Infantry Divi sion will be re activated Aug ust IS, and may soon reappear on the battle fields of Eur ope. Major Gener al C. H. Ger hard t, com mandlng officer .of the 91st, has elected to retain the distinctive divisional insig nia and the Olst's old battlecry of "Powder River Let 'er Buck," and has pledged the new 91st Division to the task of tak ing up the fight where the original "Powder River" divi sion left off. Adopted in 1918 The green fir tree insignia was adopted by General Order 57, 91st Division, in 1918 as a personal badge to be worn by each officer and man of the di vision, composed of soldiers from Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, Utah, and Alaska. After the hard-hitting 91st had covered itself with glory in France and Belgium, there was issued by division headquarters in 1919, while the Powder River gang was still "over there", a divisional order authorizing and interpreting the distinctive in signia. The order read, in part: "The distinctive divisional de sign, a green fir tree is em blematic not only of the foliage found in each state from which the personnel of this division was selected, but the evergreen and ever useful character of this foliage is emblematic also of the state of readines and the degree . of usefulnes which has charac terized, and should continue to be the aim of, each unit of the division." Ever Ready The order, issued by Major General William H. Johnston, commanding general of the divi sion, cited numerous encounters in which the 91st had proven it self "ever ready". The order, dated January 29, 1919, closed with this historic statement: "Its members are now ready, either to return to the United States and resume the pursuits of peace, or to continue their service wherever ordered by the commander-in-chief." After 24 years in the pursuit of peace, the 91st has again re sponded to the call to arms, and on August 15 veterans of the AEF division will pass on to its successors the battle scarred col ors ana xignung traamons inai will be carried into a new war. "Powder River; Let 'er Buck!" Sales Tax Is Urged By Retail Group as Curb For Inflation Washington, Aug. 8 tPl A spokesman for the National Re tail Dry Goods asociation urged the senate finance committee to day to adopt a 5 per cent retail sales tax to be in force until six months after the end of the war. Disagreeing with the treas ury's contention that a federal sales tax would be inflationary, Jay Iglauer, chairman of the as sociation's taxation committee. declared such a levy would be "distinctly deflationary" and would syphon off considerable excess purchasing power. Senator Vandenberg (R-Mich.) agreed with Iglauer s conclusion, declaring "it is absurd to say that a fixed government tax is inflationary." "We propose the adoption of a war retail sales tax of 5 per cent of the purchase price of .l tangible personal property to 1 paid by the consumer at me time of purchase,' Iglauer told the committee. Nationwide Registry Of Women For Work May Be Early Step Washington, Aug. 6 (JP) Machinery for a nationwide oc cupational registration of wom en, with a view to cataloguing the country's total, adult re sources, may be included in war service legislation now being drawn for consideration by con gress, creditable sources said to day. A manpower commission spokesman, who wished to re main anonymous, estimated one of every three or four house wives, between 18 and 44, may be needed to attain full war production. ram v. McNutt, manpower chief, has estimated that around 5.000.000 more women must be placed in jobs by the end of 1943. The general war service bill is being drawn under McNutt's direction, designed to fit man power resources to war needs. Some persons close to the man power chief expect that it may give President Roosevelt author ity to assign workers to jobs where their skills are most needed.
