A mobile glass "Victory House" will be In Medford Tuesday and Wednesday for one of the premier exhibitions and hows in the nation, it was announced by William A. Gates, chairman of the Jackson coun ty war bond committee. Main - street, between Front street and Central avenue, will be roped off for the two night shows which will be open to the sea eral public. Local and profes sional talent will take part in the shows beginning at 8 p. m., with ' Henry Murtagh, famed Hollywood organist, one of the featured stars. The unique bond and stamp "Victory House" is modeled aft er the famous bond center in Pershing square, Los Angeles. On Northwest Tour Victory House, a chromium, steel and glass truck and trailer, was presented to the treasury department by Standard of Cal ifornia, and delivery was taken on the unique vehicle this week. It consists of a truck with plat form equipped with a Ham mond Solo-Vox electric organ, and a glass victory house from which Standard Chevronettes, two beauteous lassies, will sell war savings stamps. Success of the Victory House feature in Pershing square, Los Angeles, led to demand for Vic tory Houses in other cities. In order to bring this feature to many cities, it was decided to place a Victory House on wheels and to start it on its tour In the northwest. Ray Conway, Oregon war sav ings administrator, wanted the Victory House to make its first showing in Oregon. It was de livered in California and so a southern Oregon town was chosen. Klamath Falls got the first call. The "Victory House is in Ashland today and will show here Tuesday and Wednes day after a day's vacation. As a result of being one of the first cities in the nation for the display of the mobile "Vic tnry House," moving and still pictures will be made of the showing here and it will be widely publicized. An unusual ly high sale of bonds and stamps Js to be sought, and that will add to the publicity value for this community of the Victory House visit. Open At 8:15 P. M. The program, with E. C. "Jer ry" Jerome and Leonard May field as masters of ceremonies, will open at 8:13 p. m. with a Russian dance presented by the U. S. O. under the direction of Mrs, Penny Fontaine. Patriotic songs by vocalists, and selec tions by the Medford high school band, numbers by the popular negro quintette from Camp White and accordion se lections by the Roguettes will be on the program planned by Program Chairman Jack Mat lock. A unique stunt In which Med ford firemen will participate with towering ladders will be another program feature. In cluded in the other skits will be one by "Uncle Wickie," Mat lack said. Alexander's Hawaii ans will also provide musical entertainment. An entirely different show will be featured the second evening of the "Victory House" here, according to Jackson coun ty war bond staff officials. The public has been Invited to attend each evening. Entertains for Victory Standard Chevronette Pat Hawkins, who sells War Savings Stamps in the Victory House operated by the Standard Oil Co. of California for th United States Treasury Department as a public service, is a versatile musician and drum majorette. Pat will entertain the audience when Victory House presents a special program here Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. L The 1942 pear packing school will open Monday morning in Pinnacle Packing Plant Number 2 on South Front and Four teenth streets. School officials report a large enrollment. Only those already signed up and notified of their acceptance are to report. There will be two sessions each day, with those in the first session attending the school from 9:00 to 12:00 a. m., and those in the second from 1:00 to 4:00 p. m. All members are expected to repuit prepared for work. Stu dents are to furnish their own packing gloves and finger stalls. All other equipment is furnished by the school. Present plans call for the school to operate for two weeks or up to the time picking begins. HULL AND B1EGEL STATE PROPERTY CASH VALUE SET Salem, Aug. 1 (IP) The state tax commission certified at $1,838,812,040 today the full cash value of all taxable prop erty In Oregon as of July 31 The same property was given an assessed equalized valuation for tax purposes of $995,778,422. Frank Hull, Jackson County Civilian Defense coordinator and Elmer Biegel, chief of the Ash land division of the Jackson County Council of Civilian De fense, returned Friday night from Salem, where they attend ed a meeting of the state's county coordinators and heads of county committees. Called by Governor Charles Sprague, the meeting's principal speaker was Mayor Frank S Gaines of Berkeley, Calif., assis tant regional director of the OCD in charge of mobilization and v olunteer activity. Gaines told the meeting that progress of civilian defense in Oregon had been excellent. The ground observation de partment of the fourth intercep tor command gave instructions to the coordinators and highly commended the work of the civilian volunteers throughout the state. Thief Gets $189 In Top Notch Cafe Gall Theft of $169 in cash from the Top Notch cafe, 12 S. Cen tral. Tuesday night was reveal ed by city police Saturday. The theft was discovered early Wed nesday morning and reported but due to the police working on a clue which they feared publicity miRht "tip-off", word of the burglary was not given out. City police are now working on this case and on one which occurred the' following night when $30 was taken from the Coffee Pot, drive-in restaurant on North Riverside. BIRTHS ; COMPLETE CLASS AS CANTEEN AIOES Eleven homemakers at Pros pect have completed the first Red Cross Canteen Aides course tc be offered in Jackson county. Instructors for the ten hour course were Miss Marian Far rell, home demonstration agent and Mrs. Virginia Wait, Junior high school home economics in structor. At the final session Friday, the class served a demonstration emergency dinner to forty-five residents of Prospect and Red Cross workers from Medford. The demonstration consisted of a complete well balanced meal, prepared and served in two hours. To receive practice under emergency conditions the group set up the service center and tables on the school grounds, giving them experience in as sembling makeshift table ar rangements and transportation of food from the kitchen to the service center. . Mrs. Ruth Hertager Is captain of the Prospect Canteen Corps and will have available two units to serve in any emergency, when feeding of large groups will be necessary. Eight of the eleven women have already completed full re quirements for canteen aides. They are: Mrs. Ruth Hertager, Mrs. Elva Edler, Mrs. Nadine Flynn, Mrs. Estes Mernman, Mrs. Frances Pearson, Mrs. Hat tie Salter, Mrs. Barbara Tubman and Mrs. Helen Sherman. Mrs. Mary Algeo, Mrs. Ella Middle busher and Mrs. Mary Zundel will qualify for cards on comple tion of service hours. Each canteen aide will give at least eighteen hours of service to her corps within the year, and the Prospect corps expects to aid in the promotion of the school lunch program, by assist ing with canning and preserving food. The SOfoot streamers will cost $2.50 each, 2 by 3-inch flags $1.25 and 3 by 5-inch flags $2.45, and all persons desiring to order either streamers or flags are asked to place their orders at the chamber of com merce by Monday night. Flags will include metal brackets and staffs. It was emphasized the flags and streamers were made in America, and not in Japan. Chamber officials urged that homes, as well as downtown busines firms, be decorated on August 15 in honor of the reor ganization of the 91st. Arrangements were complet ed yesterday afternoon for the establishment of a recreation center for colored soldiers at Camp George A. White, and was in operation starting at 7 o'clock last night, Mrs. A. S. V. Carpen ter of the Recreation committee announced.
