CLUB Furry'Kyker Rites Are Solemnized At Phoenix Church Thursday evening of this week the wedding of Miss Marita Isa belle Furry, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Furry of Phoenix and William Kyker, a son of Mrs. Vivian Kyker of Medford, was solemnized at the Phoenix Presbyterian church. The wed ding was one of the largest of the summer, with some 200 k guests being present. ' For the service the bride was lovely in a floor-length wftite satin dress cut on princess lines. Her veil was of lace and fash ioned with a train and she car ried an old-fashioned bouquet of gardenias, white sweet peas and pastel snapdragons. Attendants of the bride were Miss Irene Stedman, maid-of-honor and Miss Marjorie Heckert and Miss Vela Gossett, bridesmaids. The at tendants wore pastel gowns of taffeta, carried bouquets of snap dragons and roses and wore small hats of matching flowers, Little LaNora Kyker, niece of the groom, was flower girl and wore a floor-length dress of white organdy. The bride entered the church . on the arm of her father, who 9 gave her in marriage. The Lo hengrin wedding march was used for the bridal procession, with Miss Marilee Erwin of Ashland at the organ. The ring service was read by the Rev. Lawrence H. Michelmore, pastor of the Jacksonville Presbyterian church. Best man for the groom was his brother, Wayne Kyker, and ushers were Ed. Lemming, Jack White and Richard Wright. Pre ceding the services Miss Patricia Furry, cousin of the bride, sang "Because" and "Oh Promise Me," with Miss Erwin as accom panist. Following the wedding serv ice a reception was held in the church parlors. Assisting at the reception were Mrs. Raymond Furry, Mrs. Earl Briscoe, Mrs. George Bourne and Mrs. F. Fair weather. A wedding supper was served, with the bride and groom cutting the large wed ding cake. For the ceremony the church A was decorated with baskets of gladioli and ferns and groups of lighted candles. Guests for the affair were from all parts of the valley and Miss Betty Hayes came from Portland for the service. The Furry family is one of the older families of the district and is well known. The bride attended the Phoenix schools, graduating from the Phoenix high school. The groom came to Medford a few years ago from Oklahoma where he attended school at Stroud. At present he is at Camp White and the young couple will reside in the valley following their return from a wedding trip to southern Cali fornia points. For travelling the bride wore a rose colored dress made on tailored lines with a matching hat. t Mrs. Franks Weds O Clarence R. Borah Mrs. Effie Louise Franks and Clarence Raymond Borah were married in a quiet ceremony performed Friday evening, July 24. The ceremony was read at the Zion English Lutheran church by the Rev. Karl W Brockhaus, pastor of the church. Miss Mildred King attended the bride and Phillip Williams of Seattle the bridegroom. A few close friends of the couple were present for the ceremony. Mr. and Mrs. Borah will re side in Medford for the present and later this summer plan a trip to the middle west. California Guest At Espy Home Here Miss Ozeline Schmidt of Los Angeles has been a house guest the past week at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Espy, 619 Park street. Miss Schmidt ar rived from the south by main- liner. WESTERN THRIFT Annual League Throng to Colorful Setting Wednesday evening of last week found a large throng of people from all over the valley gathered on the lawns of the home of Mr. and Mrs. Porter Neff on Berkeley Way for the third annual fiesta of the Jackson County League of Women Voters. The affair, given annually by the league to raise funds for its speaker's program and to carry on local, state and na tional work, was very gay this year and presented a colorful scene with booths decorated in red, white and blue to carry out the "victory" theme. General chairman was Mrs. Chauncey Brewer and she was assisted in the large undertaking of staging the fiesta by Miss Alicia Ruhl. Miss Patricia Far rell. Miss Jean Schuler, Mrs. John Day, Mrs. Kenneth Par- rett. Miss Dorothy Breck, Miss Julie Carpenter, and Miss Nan ette Holmes. Main feature of the evening was a quiz program with a team of three prominent valley wo men defeated by the men's team in answering humorous and in teresting questions. Women on the team were Mrs. Alex Spar row, Mrs. Lela Rogers and Mrs. F. G. Hughes and they were op posed by Arthur Perry, Justin Smith and A. S. V. Carpenter. To Mr. Perry went the honor of the highest score. Jack Matlack was master of ceremonies. Other program features were community singing led by Mrs. Marjorie Pena and an exhibi tion of square dancing by a group of Camp White men and junior hostesses from the Med ford USO center, led by Mrs. Penny Fontaine. Prereding and following the program fiesta guests played games, visited the fortune tel ling booths, danced and enjoyed refreshments. The horse-racing booth run by Miss Ruhl and Miss Deborah Tumy proved very popular. Miss Lois Pringle and Miss Jean Henselman presided over a booth where patrons threw darts at caricatures of Hitler, Hirohito and Mussolini Miss Holmes and Miss Pat Dip pie ran the penny toss booth and at a booth run by Miss Virginia Hayes and Miss Betsy Scherer patrons tried their hand at toss ing garters. Many tried to ride the "buck ing bronco" trick hobby horse managed by Miss Jane Moffett and Miss Dorothy Hayes was "lady of a thousand pockets", with patrons purchasing pres ents which filled the pockets of her billowing skirt. Others went for rides in an old-fashioned buggy, in charge of Bill Salade and a number of presents were given away under the direction of Miss Julie Carpenter. These went to Mrs. H. Gates, Justin Smith, Ed Carleton and Mrs. A. S. V. Carpenter. Miss Rhoda Williams was flower girl. Miss Nina Tuttle and Miss Susan Vilas were cigarette girls and the Misses Jean Lee Van Lwuen and Virginia Turn bull sold candy. Presiding over the beano game were Mrs. Glenn Jackson, Mrs. Theron Bean, Mrs. Frank Mallory. Miss Virginia Hammond and Babs Wilbur. Miss Calista Farrell ran the golf ball throw game and for tune telling booths were presid ed over by Miss Dorothy Breck and Mrs. Mueller. In charge of food were Mrs. Kenneth Parrett, Mrs. John Day, Mrs. Glen Gibbons, Mrs. George Rasmussen and Mrs. Henri L'Abbe. Austin Murray ran the public address system and the various booths were constructed by Bill Salade. Lieut. Treece. Harlow Carpen ter and David Holmes, Jr. A committee composed of Mrs. Paul Janney, Mrs. I. E. Schuler, Mrs Harry Holmes and Mrs. Justin Smith assisted the junior committee in planning the fiesta. A room for taxi dancing had as . hostesses the Misses Pat Thompron, Kay Ford, Betty Fowler Katherine Conroy, and Peggy Scherer. As an expression of apprecia tion for their work with the benefit about 30 young people from the committee will be en tertained tomorrow evening at Veritas Orchards, home of Mrs. Leonard Carpenter, president of the league, for a swimming party followed by supper. Miss Sutherland Here From South Miss Zeatrice Sutherland of San F' lclsco spent the past two weeks in Medford with her par ents, Mr. and Mrs. Louis S.nick and her brother and sister-in-law. Mr. and Mrs. LaVerne Suther'and. Miss Sutherland toft last night for her home. While here a number of friends entertained for Miss Sutherland, a trip was made to Union Creek and Friday night Mrs. Suther land e.itertained at a bridge par ty for her. Home Central Point The marriage of Miss Hedwig Olga Sthay of Tillamook and John Henry Strube was solemnized last Sat urday evening at the James M. Cummings home in Central Point. The service was read on the lawn of the Cummings home by the Rev. D. E. Millard of Medford. The groom is an em ployee of Camp White. Follow ing a short stay in Medford the couple will make their home in Grand Ronde, Ore. Mariners Class Joins Hunt For "This And That" Thirty-one members of the Mariners class turned "scaven gers in search for this and that" Wednesday evening. The group met at the First Christian Church and were divided into four crews. Each crew was to secure 10 "hard-to-get" articles within an allotted time. Includ ed in the "priceless loot" were live frogs, night-crawlers, foot print of a cat, ice cubes, restau rant menus, and the signature of an army lieutenant. The final direction requested that each crew purchase a wa termelon for the refreshment hour of the evening. Crew No. 1 was the prize-winner, with the following "pirates' 'as members: Eileene Ford, Evelyn Savage, Virginia Cook, Shirrell Doty, Grant Hutchins and Al Paget. The Cabin crew of the class was host for the evening, manned by Mr. and Mrs. Irwin Doty, and assisted by Mr. and Mrs. Thayle Ford, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Strode and Rev. and Mrs. R. W. Ccleman. Officers announce that newcomers to the city are cordially invited to attend. Teacher Presents Three Piano Pupils Mrs. E. E. Gore presented three small piano pupils In re cital at her studio, 116 Geneva avenue, Wednesday morning be tween the hours of 10 and 12 p. m. The pupils, Katnryn Mc Allister. John DeZell and Joan DeZell are all very young and have studied only a short time. About 30 pupils and mothers at tended the recital. Nary Mothers Plan ' Wednesday Meeting Wednesday members of the local Navy Mothers club will meet all day at the home of Mrs. Minnie Hedgepath, Central Point. Harrold, 1522 West Main street, left last evening by train for a two weeks visit with her daughter and family, Lieut, and Mrs. R. W. McConnell of Clympia. Is Honor Guest - - Of Local Chapter Mrs. : William Horsfall of Marshfield, state regent of the Daughters of. the American Revolution, was honor guest at a luncheon . given jy the local chapter of the group Thursday afternoon at the Holland Hotel. Following luncheon Mrs. Horsfall reported on the annual meeting of the order which was held at Chicago this year, this being the first time that the members have convened outside of the national capital. She was introduced by Mrs. C. M. Hurd, regent of the local chapter. . About 20 attended the lunch eon which was arranged by Mrs. B. G. Harding, Mrs. Francis Cochran and Mrs. C. Q. DAlblni. Showers Honor Marita Furry Before Marriage Several pre-nuptial affairs have been given recently to honor Miss Marita Furry of Phoenix whose wedding to William Ky ker of this city was an event of Thursday evening in Phoenix. Bringing to a close these affairs was a shower given Wednes day at the home of Mrs. Bert Stancliffe in Phoenix, with Mrs. Raymond Furry, Mrs. Douglas Stedman and Mrs. Howard Thompson as co-hostesses. Hon ored also were the bride's moth er, Mrs. Robert Furry, and the groom's mother, Mrs. Vivian Kyker. About 40 guests gathered at the Stancliffe home for the af fair. Refreshments were served from small tables set on the lawns and later Miss Furry was presented with a variety of gifts. B. P. W. Clarke Wed In Portland Of Interest in Medford Is the announcement this week of the wedding of Miss Geraldine N. Loomis, daughter of Mrs. Har riet Loomis, 511 S. Oakdale, to Edward J. Clarke, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Clark of Portland. The service was read Monday, July 27, at the First Presbyter ian church in Portland by the Rev. Gerhardt. For the wedding Miss Loomis wore an afternoon dress of white with blue accessories. She was attended by Miss Ruth Fer guson of Portland and best man for Mr. Clarke was the bride's brother, Floyd Loomis of Seattle Present for the ceremony were Mrs. Loomis, the bride's mother, Mr. and Mrs. Clarke and the bride's cousin, Charles Loomis of Seattle. The bride is well known In Medford. After her graduation from Medford high school she attended Oregon state college and studied art. Mr. Clarke also attended the state college where he was affiliated with Delta Chi fraternity. Mrs. Clarke has been em ployed recently at Camp White as artist for the post exchange Mr. Clarke is with the United States forest service and the cou ple will spend the summer near Hebo, Oregon, where Mr. Clarke is stationed at a lookout post. A party of friends met at the home of Mr. and Mrs. James Riding in Jacksonville on July 24 to honor the Ridings on their wedding anniversary. A pot luck luncheon was served at noon and was followed by an afternoon of games. Mr. and Mrs. Riding were presented with a number of gifts. California Visito Return From Camp Mrs. G. H. Maasdam and her daughter. Miss Pauline Champ lin, returned home Thursday after visiting In California with Mrs. ' M a a s d a m's son, Pvt. Charles P. Champlin, Jr., who Is stationed at Camp Roberts. Mrs. Maasdam and Miss Champ lin also spent some time in San Francisco and Berkeley with friends. . Jeweit in Georgia Richard D. Jewett, son of Prof, and Mrs. H. P. Jewett of Central Point, has been transferred from Camp Crowder, to Camp Gordon, near Augusta, Ga., where he is assigned for further special Instruction. In a letter to friends Jewett mentioned that "Tobacco Road," locale of the story and film by the same i name, runs through Camp Gor-j don, only six blocks from his i barracks. . Mistletoe Club Hears Reports, Enjoys Luncheon Reports of several committees were heard at the last meeting of the Mistletoe club held at the Girls' Community club. The business session followed a cov ered dish luncheon. The club has prepared a number of lay ettes for the Salvation army. Plans were made for daily re membrances to be sent to Mrs. Frank Silva, Chico, Cal., a form er member of the club now con valescing from a serious illness. Next meeting of the club will be August 12 at the home of Mrs. Frank Hussong, 25 Barne burg road, with Mrs. Al Braun, Mrs. H. C. Glascock and Mrs. John Wilkins as assisting hos tesses. Birthday Honored At Murrey Home Friends of Mrs. M. C. Murrey of 1034 West Ninth street gath ered at the Murrey home Tues day in celebration of Mrs. Mur rey's birthday anniversary. Mrs. Murrey's daughter, Mrs. W. L. Gardner was hostess for the af fair assisted by her daughter, Venita. Darlene Fause Is Bride Of Soldier Gold Hill, Aug. 1 (Spl.: Announcement has been made here of the wedding of Miss Darlene Fause, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Fause of Medford, and Private William Wyatt, son of Mrs. Fritz Snyder of Gold Hill. The couple were married July 18 in the chapel at Fort Stevens, Oregon, with the ceremony being read by Chaplain McDonald. Attendants were Miss Juanita Reed of Call fornia and Alvin Athanus and several friends were present for the service. The bride is a graduate of the 1941 class of the Medford high school while the groom attended school in Gold Hill. Private Wyatt is stationed at Fort Stevens at present. 1 Past Noble Grands Club Plans Picnic Members of the Past Noble Grands club of Medford, with their husbands, are planning a picnic for next Sunday. Everyone is to bring a basket dinner. Family Is Surprised By Lodge Visitors Membeis of Adarel chapter of Eastern Star made a surprise visit to the new home of the M. C. Winn family on East Jackson itreet Sunday evening. The visiiors were warmly wel comed and the evening spent playing cards. Refreshments were served. Phone 2321 WE'RE SAYING JUST LIKE DADDY IS Engagement Of Miss Flynn Is Told In Tacoma Announcement of the engage ment of Miss Patti Flynn of Ta coma, made in that city this week by her mother, Mrs. Delia Flynn, will be of much interest to friends here. Miss Flynn made her home here for some time and was graduated from the Medford high school in 1938. She is to marry Morton 8. James, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Bicker of Tacoma. The announcement was mad through a telegram delivered to party of friends gathered at the Flynn home for an evening. September 12 has been set as the wedding date. Miss Flynn is at present on the staff of the Puget Sound National bank in Tacoma and her fiance is em ployed at the Tacoma shipyards. Miss Flynn is a sister of Mrs. George Harrington, Modoc orchards, and a niece of Mrs. L. Scott, 43 Glen Oak court. Ashland Women Honored Guests At Hotel Lunch Mrs. Royal E. Bebb enter tained a group of friends for luncheon at the Medford hotel Tuesday. The honored guests were Miss Ethel Mae Robinett of Ashland, who returned to the valley recently after graduating from Mills college, California, and Mrs, Marguerite Mills of Ashland who returned recently after a stay of two years in Hawaii. Mrs. Mills while In Hawaii was instructor at St. Andrew Cathedral Priory, an Episcopal church school for girls, and re lates many interesting experi ences in connection with the bombing of Pearl Harbor and subsequent events. Mrs. Mills has many friends in the valley. Methodist Women Hold Homecoming Members of the Women s So ciety of Christian Service of the First Methodist church held the monthly homecoming meet ing Tuesday afternoon at the church. Devotions were led by Mrs. Harry Myers, Mrs. L. C. Kirby had charge of the lesson and Mrs. C. A. Meeker told of her recent visit to the Methodist church homes of southern Cali fornia which she found very interesting. Mrs. Archie Pierce sang several solos during the afternoon. Following the business ses sion and program members of Loyalty Circle of the society served refreshments. , Local Woman Makes ' Trip to Portland Mrs. H. D.
