council In March to fill the va
cancy left by the death of James
A. Slover, resigned Wednesday
night. Wharton was elected by
the council Thursday afternoon.

W. E. Moore, mayor of Grants
Pass since March, resigned at a
special council meeting Wednes
day night.
Outlining his conception of
the civilian defense program to
include full authority of the
mayor over all departments of
city government, he said he was
unable to realize his alms and
therefore retired.
Moore has been a member of
the county defense council, ap
pointed by the governor, by
virtue of his position as mayor.
A vote four to one accepted
the resignation.
In his short administration
since his election by the council
to fill the vacancy left by the
death of James A. Slover, Moore
has had a turbulent administr'
tion.
A month ago he secured the
resignation ot Police Chief Ben
Graybill and placed Homer
Grable, fire chief, on probation,
charging they sought to influ
ence the council toward a pay
increase. Graybill said the dis
pute was over making reports.
Moore also was involved in a
dispute with Councilman Sam
McConnell about authority in
direction of the fire department.
McConnell is chairman of the
fire committee.
Last week he asked the coun
cil to grant him the right to
supervise and question employes
subversive to or critical of civil
ian defense or the city adminis
tration. The council shelved the
proposal at that time and did
not bring it up again Wednesday
night.

"great profile," John Barrymore
and Bramwell Fletcher, 38,
actor.
The ceremony took place at
noon In the bride's home, with
her mother, Mrs. Harrison
Tweed of Long Island as her
attendant. Antonio Sylva, an old
friend, was best man.
