BUS DEPOTS FOR TROOPS IN CITY NEAR CAMP, PLAN A a meant of meeting the transportation problems' of Camp White soldiers, two bus waiting stations will be con structed in Medford and three will be built on the Crater Lake highway in the 01st division area, it was announced yester day following a meeting be tween Major-General Charles H. Gerhardt, 91st division com mander, and the Jackson county coordinating board. The Medford waiting stations, each to be four feet wide and 18 feet long, will be located on North Riverside avenue between Fifth and Sixth streets in front of the AAA office, and on the east side of North Riverside avenue just this side of the new cloverleaf Intersection under construction near the Blg-Y Rogue Valley Transit company will provide the labor for the stations, the army the lumber. So'.diers leaving Camp White for Medford will board buses at the three waiting stations on the cantonment area, and those returning to the camp from Medford will use the stations located in the city. The Rogue Valley Transit company has 31 buses at present, and eight more will be added to the fleet in the near future. Civilians desiring to give sol diers rides are requested to pick them up at any of the wait ing stations. In this connection. General Gerhardt's headquarters announced there would be no hitchhiking by members of the 81st division. After today, the general's headquarters stated, no civilian automobiles belonging tp per sonnel of the 91st division will be allowed on the camp, the order being made In order to conserve tires and gasoline. Cars owned by 91st division personnel must be stored off the camp area. Gift Of Camp Radio By Mrs. S. S. Smith Honors Gen. White A brightly glowing remem brance of a prized friendship brought a much needed radio to the enlisted personnel of Camp White, it was revealed today by Col. Owen R. Meredith, com manding officer. The radio was donated by Mrs. S. S. Smith, 723 West 11th street, prominent Medford mat ron. Acceptance of the gift by Col. Meredith brought out the story of Mrs. Smith's long-standing friendship with the late General George White, for whom the pre sent camp was named, and his wife. She told of a deep affec tion and friendship as close to her as a family relationship Mrs. Smith said that she felt It was only right and proper to re turn to the camp personnel, in the form of the radio, some of the good will and pleasure af forded by the long and close friendship with the Whites. "I hope the radio will bring your men a good deal of pleas ure and enjoyment." Mrs. Smith told Colonel Meredith. District Attorney George W. VP) Ralph Ingersoll, editor oi the newspaper PM whose 1-A classification in the draft was appealed recently by Publisher Marshall Field, to day volunteered for army service. Major Corlo A. Pivlrotto. district recruiting officer of the southern New York dis trict, said Ingersoll appeared at army headquarters, made out his enlistment papers and went with a group of vol unteers to Governors Island TO START AUG. 15; Operation of the mammoth laundry at Camp White will commence about August 15, it was announced Saturday by the commanding officer. Costing nearly a million dol lars the main building and steam plant will have a capacity of 20,000 units daily. ' One of the largest Installations- of Its kind in the state, the laundry will employ a civil ian personnel of 568 working two shifts. Due to shortage of trained help, operations will be In creased gradually, according to Major Lyman V. Williamson, laundry and reclamation officen of Camp White. "We expect the laundry to be running at full capacity with in a month of its opening," he said. Of special Interest to the enlisted personnel was Major Williamson's announcement that a monthly rate of $1.50 will bf charged for all personal laun dry. Major Williamson also re vealed that female help is ur gently needed and listed the following jobs available: Check ers, distributors, flatwork irui, ers, operators for shirt uni's conveyor classifier, tying ma chine operator and miscella neous laundry duties. Applications for these posi tions will be taken after Au gust 5 at the civil service de partment, 45 North Fir street. METZGER NAMED Salem, July 25. (P) A. W. A limited and informal ser vice will be provided for park visitors, however, by the rental of both standard and deluxe sleeping cabins at the rim of Crater Lake ,and by a meal ser vice to be provided by Mr. and Mrs. Robert P. Berry at Park headquarters, where they oper ate the government dining hall. The services and facilities provided by the government will continue to be available, and the usual government staff will be on hand to inform and assist visitors in every practic able way. All roads and trails to points of interest will remain open, as well as the public campgrounds. Lectures will be given daily at the Sinnott Mem orial, SHERIFF'S POSSE OF! Members of the Jackson County Sheriff's Posse and offi cer personnel of the 91st Infan try division at Camp White will enjoy a joint picnic-breakfast on top of Roxy Ann this morning. Officers will leave the camp on their mounts at approximate ly the same time members of the posse leave the county fair grounds stables. The groups will join at the picnic grounds.
