Washington, July 24 (Pi Attorney General Biddle today authorized an Injunction suit under the anti-trust laws to prevent James C. Petrillo, presi dent of the American Federation of Musicians (AFL), from pro hibiting union members from making recordings for radio and other non-private use. The date and place where the bill of complaint will be filed was not announced, but a Jus tice department official said that it would be either In Chicago, Petrillo's home, or In New York, headquarters of the Musicians union, which also will be made a respondent. A'little earlier the federal com munications commission called upon Petrillo and the National Broadcasting company for a "full statement of the facts" regarding the recent cancella tion of a broadcast by the National High School orchestra from Interlochen, Mich. The broadcast was cancelled by NBC, at the request of Petrillo, who contended the amateur orchestra took work from professional musicians. Petrillo notified manufactur ers of transcriptions and phono graph records on June 25 that their licenses from the Musi cians Federation for the em ployment of union members in the making of musical record ings would expire July 31, and that thereafter AFL members would not be permitted to play for recordings, transcriptions or any other form of mechanical reproduction of music. Recently Hampton bought the $74,000 structure ASKED TO SURVEY COAL FIELD HERE George Watkin Evans of Se attle, foremost coal mining engi neer on the Pacific coast, has been appointed principal con sulting mining engineer for the coal division of the U. S. bureau of mines, and assigned to the investigation of the Coos Bay coal field. Mr. Evans has been In Port land conferring with officials of the Bonneville Power adminis tration, the U. S. bureau of mines regional office, and the state department of geology and mineral industries. He will be assisted In the investigation by Dr. H. F. Yancey, supervising engineer, and M. R. Geer, field engineer, of the Seattle station of the U. S. bureau of mines, who already have started work in the field. Outlining .the program of study, Evans stated that he ex. pected to determine the best source from which coal can be produced in the largest quan tity at the lowest cost and In the shortest period of time. This is necessary, he said, to Insure a supply of fuel for western Oregon army camps, and to in crease the supply of coal for the region generally. (Ed Note: The Jackson County Chamber of Commerce has re quested that Mr. Evans also be sent to investigate the coal situation in the Medford-Ashland district). CAPT.
