L E" HERE 5 A mobile "victory house" will visit Medford August 4 and S to assist in the local sale of war savings stamps and bonds, it was announced today by W. A. Gates, Jackson county chairman of the war savings staff. Two complete open air performances will be held each day on the stage of the unique mobile vic tory house With professional entertainers augmenting talent from various parts of the Rogue River valley, George Austin of the Stand ard Oil company was in Med ford Monday conferring with Mr. Gates, assistant state admin istrator Glenn Jackson and members of the Jackson county war savings staff on details for the local showing of the mobile unit. The victory house tour is sponsored by the Standard Oil company at the request of the U. S. Treasury Department in Washington as one of the com pany's contributions to the cur rent war financing effort. The Federal Works agency's regional office here today announced presidential approvel of two maintenance and operation pro jects for public schools in war congested areas in Oregon-. They were: Skyline district No. 9, Mult nomah county, near Portland. Shady Cove district No. 89, Jackson county, near Medford. County School Superintendent C Jt Bowman explained today the maintenance and operation project approved for the Shady Cove district Involved an ad dition to th schoolhouse, of pos sibly two more rooms, to take care of the increased attendance caused by the influx of canton ment workers into the commun ity. According to the recommen dation made to the F. W. Morris, state inspector for the state board of forestry announced yesterday that two arrests had been made recently for violation of forestry laws. One violator is being held in Grants Pass for immigration authorities and the other re ceived sentence in the justice court at Grants Pass. Nicholas Theodore Settler, who is awaiting arrival of immi gration authorities, was arrest ed July 8 for setting a fire on Ingram Logging company pro perty. Settler, reported to be an enemy alien, was born in Messa lin, Serbia. The fire was set on Grave Creek on the line be tween Jackson and Josephine counties and was extinguished before real damage could be done. Settler was arrested by state police and Morris. Harold Brevold was fined 8150 in the Justice court in Grants Pass recently for setting a fire on his property at Cave Junction during closed season. EDUCATION BOARD TO MEET NEXT TUESDAY Eugene, July 24 IIP) Chan cellor Frederick M. Hunter of the state system of higher edu cation, announced today that the next regular -neeHrig of the state board will be held in Port land Tuesday, July 28. REDLING RITES SATURDAY AFTERNOON Funeral services for Valerie Pearce Redling will be conduct- led from the Perl funeral home Saturday at 2 p. m., the Rev. Cedrie Kent of the Applegate, Involved with Powers brothers, Ashley and Richard, in a recent neighborhood row with Herman Klein and wife, charged with malicious and wanton injury to personal property, when ar raigned in Justice court yester day, waived preliminary hear ing and was ordered held to await grand Jury action under $500 bonds. Kent is the hired man of the Powers. The complaint charges that during the course of the row. Kent shot a shepherd dog be longing to the Kleins, and it has since not appeared at home Kent claimed Klein ordered the dog to bite him, before he un limbered his .22 rifle. In a hearing on a disorderly conduct charge early this week, Kent and the Powers brothers were granted 60 days suspended sentences, pending settlement of their controvery with the Kleins in a circuit court suit involving pasture and hay. F Washington, July 24 ;p) Laws to curb the profiteering fringe of war c tractors were demanded today as the result of a year-long investigation by the use naval comr 'ttee. In a summation of its Inquiry the committee said that 95 per cent of contractors were doing honest Job but "the other five percent appear to be taking ad vantage of the war situation." For that Troup, the report suggested action to limit profits. It added, however, that "wheth er this ideal shou' I be achieved through a direct limitation law, excess profits taxes, or some other means should be carefully considered by the p per com mittees of congress."
