(JP) President Roosevelt signed an appropriation bill today piovid ing $803,000,000 for the Bgricul lure department for the current fiscal year and authorizing sale of government-owned wheat for livestock feed and industrial uses at below parity prices. Presidential approval clim axed a bitter congressional fight over government wheat sales and money for the farm secur ity administration, the depart mental agency charged with operation of programs designed to rehabilitate low Income farm families. During the fight, the house at first insisted on barring sales of wheat at prices below parity, or about $1.35 a bushel. But under stern White House op position, it finally gave way to a senate proposal allowing the - sale of up to 125,000,000 bushels of surplus wheat at 83 per cent of corn parity, or about 83 cents a bushel. (Parity is a price est! mated to give farmers the same relative purchasing power they enjoyed in a base period, usually 1909-14.) Signing of the bill by Mr. Roosevelt cleared the way for movement of millions of bushels of this wheat from heavy pro ducing area into livestock feed ing areas where it is needed to auppiement corn and other feed tuffs. (JP) United States army officials per mitted the disclosure today that new contingents of American pilots, ground crews, negro troops and other forces whose presence in northern Ireland was announced two days ago, arrived on a large convoy one of a scries which has been bring ing forces for a potential inva sion of Europe. The exact composition of the newly-arrived forces and the date of the convoy's arrival were a military secret, but the new force was one of the largest brought to Britain since the first arrival of United States forces in northern Ireland was dis closed January 26. Aboard the ships, which car ried thousands of men as well as quantities of equipment, was a large corps of nurses. TO GOVERN HAWAII Washington, July 23. (JP) Ingram M. Stainback of Hono lulu was nominated by President Roosevelt today to be governor of Hawaii. If confirmed by the senate, he would succeed Joseph B. Poindexter, whose terms ex pired March 15, but who has been serving since pending a new appointment. RECREATION NEEDS Lions club members met in a closed session Wednesday eve ning and voted to sponsor a drive to supply temporary furn ishings for recreation centers at Camp White. A piano has al ready been furnished by the Lions. , Those who have phonographs, pianos or radios, discarded furn iture, card tables, games, etc., are asked to call Claude Holmes, chairman, at 2705 or 4338 and the articles will be called for.
