Detroit (U.R Building engines for fighter planes is a far more intricate undertaking than turn tng out enginea for passenger cars, according to engineers of the Packard Motor company. Nearly two years ago the com pany took the Job to build Rolls Royce engines In volume quan tities. Production arherlulee iImiiIv have been exceeded, a stagger ing achievement in view. of the gigantic proDortions of rjrenara. tory work. Packard had to re draw completely a stack of 2.S00 English-type blueprints, chang ing metric measurements fntA inches, and design and Install S.400 new machines. Take 17 Hours According to Packard engine exrjerta. here are aome f iu reasons why it is more difficult to build an airplane engine: It airplane engine has be tween 10.000 and 11.000 parts against 7.140 In an entira 1942 model car. It takes 33 hours to machine a Rolls airplane engine connect ing rod, against SO minutes for a passenger-car engine rod. It takes 82 hour to complete an aircraft cylinder block. The same job on a car block requires 7.7 hours. A Roll crankshaft remilres 87 hours against only 3.3 for tnat of a car. Incidentally, the cost of a Rolls Royce airplane crankshaft alone exceeds the cost of an entire car engine. a nous engine has 72 gears; a motor car engine haa five or six. Engine Built for PT's Finally, it takes 194 hours to assemble a Rolls aircraft engine, plus 228 extra hour for tear down and rebuild before It can be placed in a fighter nlane It takes onlv five hours tn assemble one of the finest passenger-car engines. In building the Rolls engine. Packard took a hand production j Job and placed it on a moving' assembly line basis. At the same time, it reached quantity pro-1 duction on engines for the pow-j erful Navy PT boats, an achieve- i ment for which it haa the Navy "E" flag. These boat neipea sing Japanese ships In Subic bay and Cebu and took Gen. Douglas MacArthur from the besieged Philippines. The Department of Comma-ca has files on AOfl.nnn business firms. And too, at Safeway all your food needs are under one roof all plainly displayed and arranged to sava you mora steps. Sava time by saving money at Safeway. Look at these oiy prices! And remember. they're qood every day of the week! This is a lesson in shopping that's worth reading Because th war has made "time" mora precious than ever before, it has become practically a patriotic duty to streamline our daily schedules a much as possible. This means our food buying habits must change. For one of the best ways to sava time is to cut shopping trips down by plan ning menus and market lists a week in ad vance. These suggestions from the Safeway Homemakers' Bureau should help you in your planning. Perishability is the best guide for divid ing off your purchases. Staples like flour, salt, potatoes, canned and packaged goods can be bought weeks in advance. It's wise to replace them as soon as they're used, so ' Jrou won't be caught short and, too, so you won't have to carry huge armloads at the end of the week. Ixtra-haavy purchases can be saved for times when you'll have your car or can share a neighbor's, lightening your bundles on other days. And another thing, enough citrus fruits, bacon, coffee, butter, and eggs can be bought all in one trip to last a week or more. With these purchases out of the way early in the week, then you'll need to think only about buying perishable foods. Feeds that will keep 3 to 4 days with out spoiling include most meats; vegetables like carrots, turnips, beets, parsnips, squash, egg plant, corn, tomatoes; most under-ripe fruits and the like. Buying these foods in advance saves extra shopping trips. The mest perishable foods, those which will keep only a day or two, are fresh green and leafy vegetables; ripe fresh fruits; fresh fish, chicken, and ground meats; milk and fresh dairy products ; bread, cake, pastry.
