Jackson county resident! are cooperating wholeheartedly In the United Service Organization program according to reports presented at the USO council meeting yesterday afternoon at the center. Mrs. Dolph Phipps. chairman of the council, said that the Medford people have re sponded in excellent manner in their volunteer services and in wanting tq assist in some way with the recreation of soldiers stationed In the vicinity. Announcement was made that the Daughters of the American Revolution, headed by Mrs. C. M. Hurd, were appointed can teen supervisors; Mrs. Ed Judd and Mrs. Walt Hoppe head the senior hostess committee and Mrs. L. V. "Jerry" Watklns is in charge of the Victory cookey club. Major C. K. Warren, public relations officer at Camp White. . was introduced to the USO coun cil as special service officer representing the military men at future USO council sessions. Reports Heard Reports from various com mittees were heard, Mrs. Helen Small, USO director and Mrs. Penny Fontaine, USO program director, reporting on their ac tivities, showing that USO pro gram is getting underway in fine ghaoe. The Rev. Herald O. Gardner explained that the ministers in Medford are cooperating in a vesper service being held each Sunday afternoon in the city park. John Moffet, vice chair man of the council and perma nent head of the USO drive In Jackson county, said that the drive is expected to be brought to a close this week in the county. Present were George Frey, Sam Colton, Mrs. A. S. V. Car penter and Seth Bullls, Mrs. Small, Mrs. Fontaln, John Mof fet, E. H. Hedrick, Rev. Gardner and Mrs. Phipps. COUNTY HEALTH ASSN. SELECTED Committees to head various activities of the Jackson County Public Health association during the coming year were an. nounced by Mrs. J. C. S. Weills, president, at a recent meeting of the executive board at the home of Miss Helen Bullls on Florence avenue. Paske; financial, Mrs. R. E. Green, chairman, Mrs. Spar row and Dr. George B. Dean; book shelf, Mrs. I. E. Schuler, chairman, Miss Bell and Mrs. Moore Hamilton. Va., July 10 (AP) Rescue workers early to day located the bodies of 20 men In the Pursglove company's No. 2 mine, where an explosion and a fire yesterday trapped two crews of miners four and a half miles Inside the workings. Eighteen of them were tenta tively identified. Company officials said 70 of the mine's 300 employes were in side at the time of the blast and that 26 men had been definitely checked off as safe. MBny others, however, began aiding the rescue work without reporting their es cape. Within a few minutes after the blast, a silent crowd, including wives and children of the trap ped men, gathered to await eagerly the bits of news which rescuers might report.
