JULY 8. 1942. t' I V MCS Medford Corporation employes made an excellent showing In their subscription to the USO drive which has been under way in Jackson county for the past few weeks, according to C. E. "Pop" Gates who headed the county campaign. He re ported today that $553.50 was subscribed by the corporation employes under the leadership of A. W. Lingaas. Gates said the contribution by the Medford Corporation em ployes was the most complete success of any payroll solicita "tion an any drive conducted in the county. Lingaas announced today that 85 per cent of the employes subscribed to the call for funds. It is anticipated that the drive will go "over the top" before tne close 01 me weeK, jacitson county having set its quota at $7,000 In cooperation with the nation-wide campaign to raise funds for USO recreational cen ters for military men through out the country. SPANISH WAR VETS SELECT OFFICERS Astoria, Ore., July 9 JP) United Spanish War Veterans named Henry C. Gates, The Dalles, department commander at the closing session of the state meeting yesterday and adopted a resolution calling for universal conscription. ' All property, energy and in dustrial production should be drafted "that we may be all out for defense and victory in fact as well as in theory," the reso lution declared. Hood River was chosen for the 1943 session. Other officers named Included B. A. Smith, Portland, senior vice-commander: L. W. Wipper- man. Grants Pass, junior vice- commander; E. H. Shea, Port' land, inspector, and Mrs. Louis M. Butts, Portland, auxiliary president. Packing plants of the valley re now making repairs to ma chinery and generally getting ready for the packing season, expected to start between Au gust 10 and 15. Some of the packers are making new lug boxes, and repairing old ones. No cannery prices on Bart letts, to be harvested first, are expected much before the end of the month, and there is no bint of what the price per ton will be. L! L ON NO. CENTRAL Consolidated Freightways . In corporated announced today that work had been started on the new freight terminal to be locat ed on North Central avenue, on the old Radovan property, south of the Crystal Laundry. L. C. McCorkle, agent for the Freightways in Medford, said original plans called for a $25, 000 plant but due to priorities only the first unit of the intend ed building is being constructed. The unit to cost $5,000 will be 66 feet long and 48 feet wide and will include office and warehouse space. McCorkle stat ed that the terminal will be modern in every respect and compare favorably with termin als elsewhere. Roy Johnson is contractor for the project and work is already underway on the footings. Con siderable grading is expected on the lot. Future plans call for a large warehouse facing the rail road tracks, McCorkle stated, behind the building under construction. Logan, 79, died suddenly yester dav while reading a newspaper ii. the Elks club. Long active in city political life, he was serving his first term as mayor. Dr. Logan was born here in 1863 and was one of the state's pioneer dentists. She was born at Beardstown, 111., June 25, 1857 Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Middle busher came to Central Point in 1895 from Hartford, Kas., with a family of six children and settled on the Billie Wilson farm at Table Rock, living there one year and then moving to Butte Creek, where they lived eight years. Lewis Middlebusher passed away while residing at Butte Creek. Mrs. Middlebusher moved to Trail where she en gaged In general merchandise business and acted as postmis tress for 15 years. Two sons, Denzil and Fred were born while the family re sided at Butte Creek. She has resided in Medford for the past 18 years. She was a woman of fine character and leaves a host of friends besides her family. She was the mother of 11 children, four now deceased. Surviving children are four sons and three daughters, Clarence A., Mes- calero, N. M.; Frank L., Cen tralia. Wash.: Denzil H., Med ford; Fred M., Prospect; Elva E. Storm, Monroe, Wash.; Osa L. Pence, Trail. Ore.; Enid C, Davis. Mason City, Wash.; also three sisters, Louise Post, Li beral, Mo.; Clara Baysinger. Carl Junction, Mo.; Sarah Vincent, Central Point; also 24 grand children and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2:30 p. m.. Rev. R. W. Coleman officiating. (Spl.) A subsidy payment of $231.35 will be paid by the Ashland chamber of commerce to the Rogue Val ley Transit company as its pay ment under the contract where in the bus company agreed to operate necessary bus schedules between Ashland and the can tonment at a commute rate of 40c per round trip, which justi fied the designation of Ashland as part of the army camp instal lation defense area. The payment covers the per iod of May 25 to June 24, ac cording to data presented at the city council meeting last night. The report showed the bus company had hauled a total of 4,627 passengers on the Ash land cantonment run during the month up to June 24, aver ing about four round-trip sched ules daily.
