It has been tome time since
anyone needed to feel sorry for
the world champion New York
Yankees, but their plight u get
tins more pathetic night and
day.
Since marching boldly out of
Yankee Stadium nearly three
weeks ago they have lost 11 out
of 17 contests and last nignt saw
their American League lead cut
to three games as they blew a
5-4 decision to the Philadelphia
Athletics.
This was a reduction of 1V4
games In their first place mar
gin In a single aay Decause oi
the Boston Red Sox, second
straight doubleheader victory
over the Washington Senators.
The Yankees were held to five

distance runner, laid claim to
day to the title of the world's
fastest mller. Only a few h6urs
after an eight-month suspension
had been lifted, the slim track
star blazed a mile in 4 minutes,
6.2 seconds last night, clipping
two-tenths of a second off the
recognized world record estab
lished five years ago by Sydney
Wooderson of Great Britain.
Hagg nosed out Arne Ander
son, who tied Wooderson's
world mark of 4:60.4.
If the international amateur
athletic federation meets some
time after the war to approve
new records, Hagg will have
two marks up for consider
ation. He stepped the 1.300 meters
In 3:47.6 last year, lowering by
two-tenths of a second the rec
ognized world standard set by
Jack Lovelock in the 1936
Olympic games.
Hagg was suspended last fall
until July 1 for differences with
the Swedish amateur authorities
over expenses.
