In his latest speeches, includ ing the Reichstag address in which he proclaimed war against the United States, Hitler hinted darkly that there if sabotage among the German people. He warned with all the oratorical vigor of which he is capable. that any refusal to give less than everything to the German war effort .will be punished ruthless ly That ominous threat means work for the hatchetmen- There will be more arrests, more mys terious disappearances, more German gentlemen executed to the accompaniment, "shot while resisting police." It's easier that way than to go through the dreary formality of a trial. Don't Believe It All The Gestapo is a group right ly dreaded by many elements in Germany, and thoroughly re spected by any official who has any public post. But for all that, a lot of melodramatic hooey has been written about the Gestapo. It is a police force much like many others. The Gestapo doesn't see everything. It wields no super natural powers. It Is composed of good men and bad. It Is not always Infallible. It Is often Corrupt. Often it is stupid, and in many instances it is not effi cientas, according to modern legend, everything German is supposed to be. A popular impression that Germany is a police-ridden state is approximately correct. The length of your dog's leash is regulated by police order, and the German doesn't mind be cause he has an amazing apti tude for discipline. Millions Unworrled ' But a general impression that the average German wakes up thinking of the Gestapo and that he trembles through the 0 . . . Crowds flocked to the cool theatre yesterday to get their first glimpse of the widely pub licized star and came away more than pleased, according ta reports from the theatre str.'f. day In fear of summary arrest and a dismal, mysterious fate hardly squares with the facts. Millions of Germans give no more thought to the Gestapo than, for instance, the ordinary citizens of Pennsylvania might worry about the state police. The reason for this compla cency on the part of about eighty per cent of all Germans is that they give no offense to the Nazi order. The way to get along with the Gestapo is, first and most important not to be a Jew. And, second, revere Hitler, fear Htmmler and do nothing which might even remotely be interpreted as opposition to any Nazi project. The way to be im mune to the worst the Gestapo can do is to be a member of the National Socialist party. Sleuthing Prevalent The Gestapo gets its lines Into many places. It's conceivable, although not likely, that the jan itor of your apartment is an agent. If you have given any one reason for suspicion your tele phone may be tapped occasion ally and your mail watched. You will not, unless you are a suspect of first importance, be tagged around town, nor is there any special reason for an ordi narily well-behaved man to fear the stranger who may sit with him in a restaurant. There are Gestapo agents in government bureaus. The Gestapo makes consider able use of two methods, repud iated In many countries, for keeping tab on the population. The first is employment of agents in businesses, social groups and shops. An Amer ican policeman would call such agents stool pigeons, and they operate in Germany precisely such dubious creatures would act anywhere else. But now, after Hitler's dire warning against any slackness or opposition, it is inevitable that the Gestapo will bear down more firmly. The Berliner, always imperti nent and disrespectful in his speech, says. "When Hitler barks Himmler bites." TOMATOES THRIVE Weather conditions of the past week have been beneficial to the tomato crop and blossom ing has started in some of the patches. The plants are devel oping fast under the sunshine. The county asent's office re ported today ideal haying con ditions prevailed, and farmers are speeding their crop to barns and stacks. Many farmers plan to work the fourth of July to get their crops under cover. Grain crops are doing well now and some threshing is ex pected to start by July 10. Picking of cherries in large orchards in the Ashland district will start next week. A plenti ful crop is reported but of smaller size than some years. PLAY WITH GUN FATAL Toledo, Ore., July 2.
