To Hospital Mrs. Karl L. Janouch of 1202 East Main street was taken to Community hospital yesterday afternoon suffering from a severe attack of the flu. James E. Abbott of Medford has been appointed squad leader of the first platoon of Company C, 84th Infantry training battalion at Camp Roberts, (Cal.), accord ing to word received from the camp. Pvt. Abbott, six-foot-three inches of potential fighting man, is establishing a fine record in a new group of trainees, having qualified as an "expert" on the tough bayonet course, the press release stated. Minor Mishaps Louis C. Gel brith, Jr., of Bend, Ore., and Melvin F. Brewster of Eagle Point were operators of pas senger cars which collided at the intersection of East Eighth and Bartlett streets Tuesday at 5:15 p. m. a report on file stated. A. M. Gault of 123 Cottage street and Mrs. Eva Low of 39 North Orange street were driv ing cars which collided on West Sixth street near the railroad in tersection Tuesday at 3:30 p. m. Alvin L. Peterman of 40 Quince street, operating a passenger car and T. O. Writes Article "As A Fellow American, What's Your Opin ion?", a humorous article ap pearing in Appleland News pub lished in Yakima, Wash., was written by Gordon R. Green, Medford manager of the Ameri can Fruit company. The article deals with bicycle riding. Grass Fir The city fire de partment was called to Timber Products company at McAn drew road and Ross lane yester day at 5:12 p. m. to extinguish a grass fire. Before the blaze was brought under control a large pile of old lumber was also burned. The truck returned to the fire hall at 6:30 p. m. New Warehouseman Albert O. Hansen, who formerly re sided in Okanogen, Wash., has arrived here to assume his duties as warehouseman for the Rogue River National Forest. He succeeds Karl Chapler. who recently took a position with the U. S. army air service in Port land. Mr. Hansen was accom panied to Medford by his wife and son. Leaving Today Second-Lieu tenant Thomas H. Culbertson. technical inspector in the U. S army air force stationed at Le moore army basic flying school near Fresno, Calif., planned to return to the field this afternoon by plane. He arrived here last night to visit relatives. Second- Lieutenant Culbertson is former manager of the Medford munici pal airport. Vacation In South Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Meeker and daughter Eleanor returned last evening from a two weeks' trip to south ern California. Driving south by way of Sacramento, they visited friends in Los Angeles and vicinity, including Riverside and Santa Ana. They returned by way of the coast highway, stopping in Santa Barbara and San Francisco, Mrs. A. J. Jo hannson and Miss Roberta Iven hoe returned with them from Oakland. Cal. Mrs. Johannson is here to visit her parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Corey of the Crater Lake highway. Society To Meet Jackson County Medical society will meet tonight at 7 o'clock for dinner at the Catholic parish house on South Oakdale avenue. Dr. A. J. Loeffler will give a paper. Dr. A. E. Dodson will also appear on the program. To . Receive Wings Cadet Henry Ward Evans will be grad uated from Lake Charles Army Flying school. Lake Charles, La., Friday at 9 a. m., when he will receive his wings and a rank of second lieutenant. Cadet Evans is the son of Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Evans of Chiloquin, Ore., former Talent residents. Eagles To Meet Crater Lake aerie. No. 2093, Fraternal Order of Eagles and Auxiliary will meet at the hall Thursday at 8 p. m. to hear A. C. Lucas report on. the state convention held In La Grande and other aeries he visited during his vacation. The meeting will close with a dance. Return Home Mrs. Frank Ap- plegate and daughter, Ella, have returned to their home on South Oakdale avenue after a month's vacation in California. They visited friends in San Diego, Santa Barbara, Tulare and at Los Angeles were guests of Mrs. W. C. Debley, former Medford resident. Visit In Roseburg Mrs. May- belle Klemm of this city and her sister. Miss Olive Wilson of Klamath Falls are visiting rela tives and friends in Roseburg for several days. Mrs. Klemm formerly taught school In Rose burg and for a number of years has been on the faculty of Medford junior high school. Cited To Court Clifford Cleo Allen of this city was charged by state police yesterday with operating an automobile with more than three persons in the front sea. He was arrested at the junction of the Midway and airport road yesterday. Allen was cited to appear in justice court Thursday. Oregon Apricots Bring $1.10 Box Portland, July 1 (IP) The first offering of Oregon-grown apricots was on the farmers' wholesale market today from The Dalles. It was delivered by Walter Erickson and sold at $1.10 a box Dalles, sold a load of Mayflower peaches at $1 and also offered the season s first Lambert cher ries. (IP) The government filed complaints in federal court today charging the Southern Pacific Railroad company with violation of a law prohibiting confinement of ani mals more than 36 hours with out unloading them for rest, food and water. 570 REGISTER IN DRAFT BOARD TWO Registration of males between the ages of 18 and 20 years totaled 570 at the county court house yesterday, according to Selective Service board number 1. Board number two. which comprises outlying districts from Medford, was expected to have completed its count by late this afternoon. Of the 570 registered yester day 312 were from Medford, the other 258 being out-of-state, CCC and Camp White employes. PIONEER DIES Milton-Freewater, Ore., July I. (IP) Mrs. Aaron Miller, nearly 100, died at her home east of Freewater Tuesday after a brief illness.
