PLENTY SALMON
WAITING ANGLER
IN ROGUE RIVER
Big Fish Still Passing Over
Gold Ray Dam in Numbers
Wharton Gives Advice.
By Joe Wharton
(Rogue River Fishing Authority)
Salmon are still very plenti
ful in Rogue river but are not
striking as consistently as they
did a few weeks ago. Only one
salmon was reported taken in
We-Ask-U Inn waters Sunday.
One party hooked what was sup
posedly a summer steelhead,
which broke the tackle und got
away.
Observations by the far-t-find-Ing
biological survey crew at
Gold Ray dam show that salmon
are still passing Into the upper
river in good strong run. Dur
ing the week between June 17
and June 23, 8,660 Chinook sal
mon, including jacks, passed
over the flshwBy, and with
them 121 steelheads, presum
ably of the summer run. Total
of chlnook salmon from April
22 through June 23 was 28,238,
steelheads 2,045 not to mention
2.821 suckers. Joe Madams,
game warden, was at Rainey
Falls one day last week and re
ported good run of salmon
still coming over the falls.
Best trout fishing recently,
also best salmon fishing, has
been along the upper stretches
near Trail and Shady Cove
bridge. Mrs. Cella Massle, Miss
Ruth Crawford and Miss Velda
McFarland spent two days in
that section with Guide Glen
Wootdridge, and they had wond
erful fishing. Besides taking a
limit of trout of various sizes,
they caught three salmon, weigh
ing from 12 to 25 pounds on
light tackle. Two of the salmon
were caught on that Indescrib
able freak, the "Helm Flat
Flsh." Parties fishing the North and
South Forks report good fly fish
ing for trout on these tribu
taries. From now on, with the
coming of real summer weather,
fishing will be good in all the
tributaries of the upper Rogue.
A few - summer ateelheadi
have been taken on flies during
the past week. Joe Madams
caught one on the riffle below
Hog creek, above Hell Gate,
that measured 23 inches and
weighed approximately four and
half pounds. . He took It in
lata evening on a Royal Coach
man while trout fishing. Others
have been hooked by fishermen
using small flies for trout but
they invariably get away. . In
normal seasons the first consist
ently good fly-fishing for steel
heads is had on Pierce riffle, Just
oeiow we-Ask-u inn, generally
between the first and tenth of
July. This promises to be a
normal season and wa look for
the fun to begin there on
schedule. Lake fishing so far
has only been fair but should
Improve with warmer weather.
Spokane, July 1UPt Only
IB golfers have entered the
western amateur tournament to
be held here July 7-12 but at
least that many more, Including
most of the nation's top-flight
amateurs, are sure to be on
hand at the tee-time, Boyd
Walker, chairman of the local
tournament committee, reported
today.
Corp. Bud Ward, the defend
ing champion, has obtained
leave from hla second air force
post and will defend his cup
against such men ag Wilfred
Wehrle and Art Doerlng.
