While exact fig ures of sugar stocks like those of gasoline are suppressed by cen sorship (not the voluntary kind), the Henderson office has an nounced stocks are only 20 per cent below last year. Government officials private ly claim that these stories you read about warehouses bulging everywhere with sugar, are cir culated by political forces who want to kill the sugar act. Apparently south coast stor age houses are overflowing, be cause they are not accustomed to handling as large a portion ot the supply as has poured in upon them lately. Also a Texas factory said it was going to shut down because it had no storage space left. The country as a whole has no surplus of sugar, although the question of how much ra tioning Is Justified is still open. C, June 30 HERR HITLER may be the No. 1 enemy, but Oregon a Sen ator McNary Informed Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox In his Judgment and he admitted that he is not a war strategist the United States should dispatch to the Pacific northwest, and par ticularly to Alaska, some of the bombers and fighter planes and some of the warships which are now being sent to the allies in Europe and Russia. The north west is vitally concerned with the Japanese and their opera tions on the west coast; their determination to establish a bridgehead in Alaska. The view of Secretary Knox (the navy has charge of all de fense work along the coasts), as expressed to McNary, is that the Japanese are but passing visi tors to Alaska; that all the Jap anese want Is to establish an observation point in the harbor of Kiska bland. Later, when the weather permits, the navy will make an attempt to drive the enemy from all the Aleu tians and from Alaska waters. Meanwhile the secretary agreed to reinforce all of the defensive measures in Alaska, Washington and Oregon and orders have gone forth with that object in view. e e SENATOR BONE of Washing ton, a usually highly nervous man, takes the bombing by a Japanese submarine off Van couver island and the Oregon coast as just one of those things that can be expected in war. Senator Bone is quite philosoph ical over the situation. He had expected something of the sort, and Secretary Knox gave the impression that the shelling near Seaside and at Vancouver island is not likely to be re peated. However, people of the northwest now know that en emy submarines infest their off shore waters, a menace to every vessel moving in or out of Puget sound, the Columbia river or the smaller harbors of the west coast. And while the Japanese were busy in the Pacific northwest President Roosevelt and Win ston Churchill were debating when and where a second front should be opened in Europe. But in these conversations, which extended for days, a hot point to determine was whether the command in chief of the United Nations forces on this second front should be an Amer ican or a British officer. The British commanders have not heretofore established any bril liant record and they have lost much American equipment, as members of congress are pro testing. FOR the first time since wom en were granted the privilege of voting they may be the decid ing factor In the congressional elections In Washington and Oregon this year. Registration of women has never been far behind the men in recent years, and with thousands of voters taken into the army, navy and marines this automatically in creases the voting strength of the women. Some of the absent voters will be replaced by war work era who have moved Into the war industry towns, but the majority of these "outsiders" will not register and vote and others, for one reason or another, will be unable to qualify as electors in these states. Based on these conditions, it is predicted that the women may determine who shall be elected and who de feated. There will be few stay-at-home votes among the moth ers an3 sisters of sons and brothers in the armed forces, e e A very large segment of con gress is convinced that there is an organized effort by commu nists and fellow travelers (they have taken large space in news papers) to defeat members of congress who opposed war prior to rearl Harbor and such mem bers as have been red-baiters. The Dies committee has taken cognizance of this movement, naming names and the affilia tion of some of these people with "front" organizations. In dividual members have been calling attention to the move ment for a couple of months. Phone 4750 The Idea appears to be to dis credit congress and eventually to destroy the parliamentary system. It haa been asserted on the floor of the house that in the "bundles for congress move, which started in Spokane, two active proponents of that plan to ridicule congress were a Nazi agent and an American agent of the Japanese government, the latter now under indictment for neglecting to register with the state department. THE Truman committee may soon investigate the steel and iron situation in the northwest, where grand plana were an nounced for steel production and then suddenly cancelled. The steel situation is more than "tight," so much so that ship yards In the west are pulling strings to obtain sufficient metal to keep the ship program up to schedule. . . It is all working out as expected. WPB has ordered all canned beef held until the latter part of September by owners of large stocks. Next month canned beef from South America also will be taken over by army and navy. South Amer ican canned beef Is mostly the better cuts and was the prin cipal canned beef stock on groc ery shelves even in the cattle country. Communications WANTS LOCAL C. OF C. TO WAKE UP To the editor; I see by the Oregonian that Coos county coalfields are going to be developed at once. Two officers from the army quartermaster corps in Washing ton, D. C, have been investigat ing a fuel supply for new can tonments at Medford and Cor vallis, Ore., and are ready to urge RFC loans to local com panies ready to produce the needed coal. David Eccles, war Industries co-ordinator, is assisting in the local development work, Mr. Coe said. Over 45 years ago my father developed a coal mine and oper ated it as manager for the S. P. railroad. This coal mine opera tion is just about four miles south of Medford. This coal mine will produce gome 50,000 tons of coal if put In operation now. It needs to be cleaned and retimbered and as there is a good road to tlje mine dump where a truck can reach the mine. Your Chamber of Commerce should wake up and open this coal mine and produce your own coal for local consumption. I know the coal exists; three-foot vein of It In that old S. P. coal mine. What is needed is some business men who will equip and fix up this coal mine for production. I am a thoroughly experienced coal miner and coal mine manager. I know the min ing operation and development of coal mines and coal deposits i hold a government certificate as a coal mine manager. I ent ered coal mines to work when only eight years of age in Penn sylvania where I was born. My father, before his demise in 1919 was general manager of coal mines for over 50 years.
