Fred LeRoy Thompson was sentenced to 10 days in the city jail on a similar charge. Chimney Fire The chemical wagon of the Medford fire de partment was called to the resi dence of R. A. Morris, 524 North Grape street to extinguish a chimney fire about 9:15 o'clock )last night. No damage was re ported. Backs Into Car Jack Hayden Creager of 27 Crater Lake avenue backed out of a city parking lot on North Bartlett street yesterday and ran into the car driven by Harry Dale Crouse of Phoenix, according to a report on file. The right front fender on Crouse's car was badly damaged, the report stated. Following a two-day stay here they will continue to Aberdeen, Wash., to visit Mrs. Clark Walker's parents. Clark Walker is remembered here for his daring driving when au'o mobile racing flourished at the fairground several years ago. Mr. Barber is a flying Instructor at Santa Marie field. House Guests Mr. and Mrs. I. W. Helgren of Reno arrived here Wednesday for a visit at the home of Mrs. Helgren's pa rents. Dr. and Mrs. C. H. Paske. Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Paske. Jr., are expected to arrive this week end, accompanied by Mrs. W. H. McHugh of Tacoma, Wash., mother of Mrs. Paske, Jr. Paske, Jr., has just received his wings at Peiuacola, Fla., where he has been stationed, receiving I training as a radio man. He also holds his pilot's license. Mrs. Paske's mother, Mrs. M. H. Russell of Berkeley, Cal., is also a guest in this city at the Paske residence, 1010 South Oakdale avenue. DANCE at K. P. Purse Stolen Eureka Young of Route 1, box 489 reported to city police yesterday that her purse was removed from the counter of the store where she Is employed as saleslady. Just having reported for work she laid her purse on the counter while waiting on a customer. A sugar ration book, social secur ity card, small amount of money and other items were in the bag, she said. Here Today Clem Clark of Salem, general supervisor of de fense training classes in Oregon, was here today conferring with instructors of local defense classes and E. H. Hedrick, city school superintendent, who. is local defense class head. Clark emphasized greater need for welders, explaining that expan sion of the shipyards in Ore gon it requiring a large number of welders. Chosen For School Sgt. Wil liam M. Porter, son of Mrs. K. D. Ross of Spokane, both of whom are former Medford resi dents, has been selected to at tend the air force officers' can didate school at Miami Beach, Fla., according to word received from Gowan field, Boise, Idaho. Sgt. Porter was a student at the University of Oregon prior to enlisting in the service six months ago, and has been a clerk in the public relations office at the Idaho base. f Hurry! Others interested are urged to join in the celebration. Refresh ments wil be served from the canteen and a varied program of musical talent will be presented during the afternoon and ing. The USO council urged the general public to come to the center Sunday and "get-acquainted" so they will feel that it is "their center also." An ex pression of gratitude was issued to those who have donated serv ices to completion of the center. Included in the list were Miss Audry Davis, Philip Henselman, Frank Runtz. Leland Mentzer, A. Fire Chief Roy Elliott talked on incendiary bombs and the part of the senior hostesses can play in fire prevention by correct knowledge of methods in hand ling the situation. He suggest ed a course in first aid also for the senior group. Efforts are being made by government and private inter ests to develop a silk industry in some of the American re publics.
