PAGB NINE LOCAL and VUltlng Mother Mrs. Char les Durham of Bremerton, Wash., is enjoying a short visit at the home of her mother, Mrs. T. G. Heine, 916 West Tenth street. Mrs. Durham, a former Med ford resident, was a member of Mall Tribune office staff for fiva years. Burled Eldon White, brother of the late E. J. White of Phoe nix, died In Minot, N. D., last Sunday and was buried In Min neapolis, Minn. Yesterday, ac cording to word received by Phoenix resident. E. J. White, a Phoenix rancher, passed away about five years ago. Slight Damage The city fire department answered a call at the residence of Mrs. T. W. Young, 518 South Oakdale ave nue yesterday at 3 p. m. Slight damage was caused evidently hi frorn short In the electric Juno tion box between the walls of the home. The pumper answer ed the alarm. . Promoied George C. Smith and Elroy A. Martin have been promoted to technical sergeants from staff sergeants, effective June 15, it was announced today by Master Sergeant Willie M. Daws, in charge of detachmbent headquarters squadron, second air service command, Mcdford municipal airport. e Visits Daughters Mrs. H. C. Hoehne of Roseburg is visiting at the home of her daughters, Mrs. Lloyd Ferg and Mrs. Ed Cachelin and friends in this city. She plans to return home by motor this weekend and will be accompanied by Mrs. Ferg ) and children, Marshall and Rus sell and Claren Blake. Petty Officer Ivan Branch Cobb, son of Mr. and Mrs. M. S. Cobb of 715 King street, has received his diploma as third class petty officer and is to be assigned to duty as range finder on a U. S. battleship in a few days. Out of a class of 79 the highest grade was 94 and Cobb scored 89 V4 points. His present address Is San Diego, Cal. The Medford theatres' sale of ) war bonds and stamps continues to grow as the figures today accounted for more than $3,200 in bonds and stamps sold during the past two weeks. Because they are proud of the work they are doing the theatres have a bond barometer in the lobby of the Craterian theatre which will show to patrons and the public the steady growth of sales for all the theatres. The display Is painted on the large lobby mirror in the Craterian's foyer and each day as the sales grow the red line of the barom eter will shoot toward the ceil ing. At the rate sales have come in the past two weeks it won't be long until it reaches the ceiling. The four local theatres are the only theatres in the state and possibly the country that can take orders and fill them at the same time. This has been made , possible by the Medford branch ' of the First National Bank of Portland. Showgoers and the public may leave their orders for bonds at any Medford the atre as they attend the show and pick it up as they leave. This service is maintained espe cially for those who work dur ing bank and post office hours, however, many southern Ore gonians are now buying their bonds "after hours" because of the convenience it affords. The theatres will continue to give this service to the public as long as the demand continues for the bonds, which, of course, means for the duration. George A. Hunt is particu larly pleased with the accept ance the public has made of this medium of bond and stamp sales and has instructed his staffs in all four theatres to give full assistance to those wishing to purchase either bonds or tamps. Carraker, charged with being drunk in a public street was sentenced to 10 days in the city jail or leave the city. Army Enlistments Enlisted in the U. S. army at Portland recently were Donald R. Grigs by of Route 4 (air corps), Ger ald R. Bourn of 1128 West Main street, Alvey A. Dorsey of 109 Vancouver avenue and Ernest M. Madden, according to word received from the -Portland re cruiting office. To Enter School Clyde Hoi lenbeck, recent graduate from the University of Oregon, left last night for Oakland, Cal., where he will enter the naval air corps training school. Hol lenbeck has been spending the past week with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Hollenbeck of 722 North Riverside avenue. He just returned from -a week In Los Angeles with friends. Minor Mishaps Claude H. Wright of Route 2 box 627 and Robert Gordonhenert of the Jackson County Trailer camp were operators of passenger cars involved in a minor mis hap at the intersection of West Main and Grape streets Wed nesday at 6:45 p. m. a report on file stated today. Ralph John son of Phoenix and William C. Dobbyn of Jacksonville were driving passenger cars which collided on Midway road about one mile north of Four Corners Wednesday at 6:30, p. m., ac cording to a report on file. CLOSE CALL FOR J'VILLE DRIVER Virgil Lester Wells of Jack. sonville escaped injury last eve ning about 11:30 o clock when the automobile he was driving collided lightly with a Southern Pacific freight train at West Main street crossing. According to the city police report Wells was driving his sedan west on Main street and tried to beat the train to the crossing. Wells evidently pulled around a string of cars which were stopped for the train. See ing that he could not make the crossing he put on the brakes and turned left between the track and Culy's service station fence and stopped near the load ing platform. The report stated that the right front fender of Wells' car was crumpled as he struck the engine driver.
