Twenty-three Jackson county youths will take part in a navy enlistment ceremony to be held at the Multnomah stadium in Portland on Friday, June 26. Taking part in the program will be several recently decorated naval heroes, also Navy Re cruiter C. F. Patton of Portland and his seven sons. The sons are survivors of the U. S. S. Lexington. Leaving tonight from Med ford are: J. M. Carpenter, local navy recruiter, Richard Schafer, ton of L. C. Schafer, 110 E. Sixth street; Marion Grizzell, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. M. The ceremony marks the en listment of 9,000 men into the navy from the Oregon navy re cruiting district during the fis cal year 1942. C Seed Shipment Going Oversea AAA Disappointed By Seed Deal Direct Purchase And Sale Wanted Br Jeha W. rally Washington. D. C. June 25 Farmers in Washington and Ore gon will be called upon to fur nish carloads of hairy vetch and Austrian winter peas to England in the days to come. Ten trains of 60 cars each have rattled across the continent and the 600 carloads of seed have been showed aboard ship and landed safely in England. The , ship ments are charged up to lend- lease. Expansion of seed cultiva tion in the northwest is scarcely six years old. It is part of the program to save the soil of southern planters and is worked out through the department of agriculture by Triple A, the commodity credit corporation and seed dealers. The sou con servation program in the south. using vetch and peas, started in 1938 when the department bought one million pounds at $5.40 per hundredweight for peas and $11 for vetch. The cost was deducted from Triple A payments to farmers. For the seed northwestern growers re ceived $2.28 for peas and $6.18 for vetch. The spread between what the grower received and what the government paid went to distributors, wholesalers, Job bers, dealers and transportation. By 1940 the growers had produced 53,000,000 pounds of peas and 26,000,000 of hairy vetch, which was four times the 10-year average and double the peak production up to that time. Triple A had launched an educational campaign among farmers of the Pacific north west apparently the only sec tion where these seeds are grown satisfactorily. The seed trade bought a total of 33,000,000 pounds of the two seeds and growers sold the balance to com modity credit corporation, local southern dealers being paid 20 cents per hundredweight to dis tribute to farmers. Some 300,000 southern farmers planted the seed for a cover crop, com pared with 140,000 farmers In 1933. When the program started less than three per cent of the farms had such crop. The south is being rebuilt by far mers in far off Oregon and Washington. a a THE supporting price In 1941 was not as good as growers thought it should be for peas and acreage was reduced, but the hairy vetch acreage increas ed and despite bad weather there was again a crop of ap proximately 26,000,000 pounds. Last year seed dealers asked Triple A to work out a plan which would permit them to handle the entire crop from grower to consumer, and this became Public Law 121. This provided that the trade should buy all of the crop at prices to the grower equal to the govern ment support price and sell to southern dealers for distribution with a reasonable profit to the latter. Prices to the southern farmer were to be $4.80 for peas and $9.15 for vetch. Everything was in the hands of dealers. Says Triple A, "it can draw no other conclusion than that the seed trade did not fulfill its end of the bargain." Only 3, 000,000 pounds of peas and less than one million pounds of vetch were actually distributed at the agreed price. Outside of these amounts southern farm ers were asked to pay $9 for peas and $12.70 for vetch. De spite this price charged southern farmers the northwest grower received only about the price originally guaranteed by the government. Such pur chases, says AAA, would be in cooperation with patriotic ele ments in the seed trade, who would receive Just profits for cleaning and otherwise process ing and aiding in distribution, for the 1942 seed crop (hairy vetch and peas) Triple A cal culates a spread of 80 cents a hundredweight on peas and 90 cents on vetch, of $16 and $18 a ton. The government agency wants western dealers to receive 50 per cent and this is being resisted by the southern distri butors. Through an error this column stated the entire $16-$18 per ton was to go to western dealers. It is to be whacked up and on undetermined basis. Hinds, a shipyard worker, charged with taking and using an auto belonging to another without authority, was granted a six months' suspended sentence on plea of guilty be fore Circuit Judge H. K. Hanna late yesterday. Hinds was driving from Seat tle, Wash., to Oakland, Calif., and In the Gold Hill district took the Foots Creek road by mistake. Later, the car toppled over an embankment and was badly damaged. It belongs to John H. Ross, Seattle. Terms of the suspended sen tence provide that Hinds reim burse Ross for the damage to his auto, conduct himself in a proper manner and keep the dis trict attorney advised of his ad dress in Oakland.
