gon for IS years, seven of which
have been spent on their sheep
ranch on Butte creek 33 miles
from Medford.
'Most of this time has been
spent in the mountains," the
writer declared, "and I don't
mean In the foot hills either."
One year was spent as a forest
service guard In Eastern Ore
gon. Vonstein has written a serial
story with the setting around
Seven Lake Basin and Devil's
Peak southeast of Diamond
Lake, which will be published
soon In "Young People's Stand
ard," Nazarene publication.
He has written numerous arti
cles and a little poetry for re
ligious publications.
'Oh, I am Just that way," thla
author explained when asked
how he happened to start writ
ing- I can write best in the
early morning, and I don't have
any trouble keeping at it. But
after five or six hours I can't
write any more, and I find that
I can do better If I have plenty
oi exercise. So he expects to
fight fires and get In eight hours
of dally labor for the forest
service. He has taken along his
favorite book, "Seven Pillars ol
Wisdom," by Col. T. E. Law
rence, but his two volume dic
tionary was too much.

Vonstein, born in Pennsyl
vania, sees a serious need for
genuineness in the literary
field, and he expects to instill
this quality in his writings by
actually living the outdoor life
of which he writes. Ha has
reached that stage in his career,
envied by every struggling
writer, when editors send him
letters Instead of rejection slips,
and he stresses the old advice
that the only way to write la
to keep writing. He has rea
sons to believe that Harper's
Magazine may accept a short
story, and indicated hla eager
ness to reach that goal,
"There la always something
Just ahead," he commented.
Like every writer, ne visions

H hasn't written a nautical
production yet, but keeps his
notes and ideas tucked away
until he finds need for them.
With his camera he supplies.
most of the pictures for hla ar

Vonstein takes great delight
in his Butt creek band of 70
sheep, and sees no reason for
using a pen name.
