PAGE FIVE Society by Betty Betrothal Of Marie Bollou Told by Mother Relatives and friends in south ern Oregon received word last week of the betrothal of Miss Marie Boliou, daughter of Mrs. Pearl Boliou of Ukiah, Cal.. to Private O. C. Carpenter, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter of Sal inas, Cal. Miss Boliou spent several months in Medford and Ashland last summer in co pany with her mother. Miss Biliou graduated from Ukiah high school Friday and has been associated with the community players, having en tertained at Ukiah and Willits . with vocal selections. The bridegroom-elect is at present at tending aviation ground crew school in Chicago with the U. S Marines and expects to complete ms course this fall. She is the granddaughter of f&T. and Mrs. L. F. Lozier of Ashland and other relatives in 1 Medford include Charles Phcis- ter, Mrs. Viola Kershaw and Er nest Pheister. Picnic Held At Spilver Home By Local D.A.R. Crater Lake chapter, Daugh ters of the American Revolu tion, held a picnic luncheon on the lawn at the heme of Mrs. H. F. W. Spilver on Hamilton street Saturday, June 13. This was the annual Flag day picnic Fand was attended by 17 mem bers and three visitors. Following the luncheon, a short business meeting was held. The meeting date was voted to be the fourth Saturday of each month beginning with the next meeting, which will be Septem ber 26, as July and August are vacation months. Guests at the, meeting were Mrs. Nettie Howard, Mrs. F. W Wait, and Mrs. F. Wilson Wait. Mrs. Jessie Beach was chair man of the committee. Assist ing her were Mrs. Lester Niel sen and Mrs. Helen Dixon. Klamath Couple To Reside Here New residents in this city are Mr. and Mrs. James Lear, who were married last Sunday after noon at the Walt Kennett home kin Klamath Falls. They plan to "make their home here during the summer months, Mr. Lear being employed at Camp White. Mrs. Lear is the former Hazel Leonard and has taught for a number of years In the Klam ath Falls schools. She will re sume her teaching in the fall. Visitor Returns To San Francisco Mrs. Agnes Hofflemyer of San Francisco, has returned to her home in the south after vacationing with her sister, Mrs. Clarence Strange in this city. Mrs. Hofflemyer was entertain ed at numerous social events during her stay in southern Ore gon, among them a luncheon re cently by Mrs. T. W. Meeting Reports on the Grand Session, O.E.S., held In Portland recently were heard Thursday evening at the meeting of Adarel chap ter. No. -3, O.E.S.. Jacksonville at the Masonic hall. The meet ing brought to a close activities of the chapter until the fall months. Adarel chapter' was well rep resented at the grand session with Lulu Saulsberry, grand chaplain; Mollie Britt, grand representative of the District of Columbia; Dorothy Waldron, grand page; Mattie Luman, wor thy matron of Adarel, Jeanette Spencer, La Vesta Gardner and AUiean Maxwell being in at tendance. The memorial service in com memoration of departed mem bers, written and directed by Mrs. Saulsberry, was described as impressive and beautiful. The late Col. Robert Miller, was a former member of Adarel chap ter and organizer and first wor thy grand patron of the Grand Chapter of Oregon. On behalf of the members I Mrs. Luman presented a gift to Dorothy Waldron. A vote of thanks ws given Edith Antle and Jane Kessler for work on the afghan. The dining room tables were decorated with vases of summer flowers. In charge of arrange ments and refreshments were Violet Wilson, Anna Langley, Mabel Todd and .Wilton Wynn, assisted by Vivian Wilson, Ern est Langley, May Wynn and Grant Todd. e Vacation Recital At Gore Resident An interesting musical event of the vacation season was a piano recital presented by stu dents of Mrs. E. E. Gore at her home the morning of May 12. The recital was preceeded by a studv of the record of Beethov en's "Fifth Symphony", the first theme of which has come to De known as the victory theme, three dots and a dash. Guests were Mrs. Jean McAl lister, Mrs. Richard Payne, Mrs, Walter Lillie. Miss Alice. Holm- back, and Miss Betty Mowbray. Assistine were Miss neien Storm. Miss Derva Sater and Miss Kathleen Seekatz. Visitor Returns To Oregon City Mrs. Andrew Hedlund, for merly of this city, visited for several days in this city last week with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Childreth on South Peach street. Mrs. Hedlund was en route to her home in Oregon City from Klamath Falls where she had been a guest of her daughter, Mrs. Virgil Barron, for the past three weeks. Mrs. Hedlund also visited her son, Cadet Al Gould of the U. S. army air corps, who has been on leave from Lowry field, Denver, Colo., and who returned by bus to Denver Wednesday evening. She was accompanied home by her granddaughter. Miss Shirley Ann Childreth, who will spend a week or 10 days In Oregon City. Benefit Bridge Well-Attended An invitational benefit bridge was held June 12 at the Sacred Heart parish hall for St. Anne's Altar society. Buffet salad lun cheon was served followed by an afternoon of cards when 28 tables were at play. Hostesses for the occasion were the Mesdames Theron W. Bean, Larry Espy, Bernard Nord and Walter Young. Prizes during the afternoon were awarded to the Mesdames George Daugherty, C. J. Giesel, P. G. Humphrey, W. W. Kline felter, J. Murray Porter, L. L. Club members and all others in the community in terested in flower culture are invited to enter and exhibit specimens. Entries must be in by 12 o'clock and exhibitors are limited to the Phoenix district. Arrangements of the following types will appear for judging as to distinction, relationship to container, proportion and , bal ance, color harmony, ami con dition of material: Show bou quets, over 2 feet in height; liv ing room arrangements, less than 2 feet; table arrangements; min iature arrangements; old fash ioned bouquets; line arrange ments with foliage or with few flowers; an arrangement of iris with own foliage; an arrange ment with a dead branch or rock predominating; arrange ments in low, flat containers: warm colors in copper, brass, or bronze; cool colors in sil'.u. pewter, and chromium: land scapes, baskets of flowers; pic torial arrangements of different countries; and miscellaneous. A silver tea will be held in the afternoon in connection with the floral displays and exhibi tion. Shower Held At Wright Home A bridal shower at the M. C. Wright home on Janney lane Friday June 12 honored Miss Jean Hayse of Phoenix, who was married to Richard Wright of Medford Friday evening at 8:30 o'clock at Phoenix. Host esses for the occasion were Mrs. M. C. Wright and Mrs. Ray E. Wright. The house was decor ated with spring flowers and the guests enjoyed entertain ment on the lawn of the Wright home.
