Rease Braley has ac cepted the appointment as chairman of home hospitality for enlisted men according to an announcement yesterday by Mrs. A. S. V. Carpenter, chair man of the civilian defense rec reation committee for Jackson county. Volunteer committees appointed by Mrs. Braley will be assisted by the Works Pro ject Administration in compil ing lists of names and places available for home hospitality. This project will require the combined efforts of the people of this defense area and it is ex-1 pected that many will '-"luntcer ! their service, it was stated, j Those who wish to volunteer for this activity are asked to con- tact Mrs. Braley or Mrs. Car-; penter. To date, Mrs. Braley, general in charge, has secured her corps of captains, who in turn will ap point lieutenaats to contact available sources for home hos pitality. Captains with specific group assignments include: Mrs. Don Newbury, churches; Mrs. William Holloway, fraternal and patriotic; Mrs. Justin Smith, women's clubs; Mrs. George Frey, civic auxiliaries; Mrs. Cleo Gilchrist, Gold Hill; Mrs. C. H. Taylor, Central Point; Mrs. Berthold Barnum, Phoenix, and Mrs. A. L. Beck, Jacksonville. PUBLISHERS HEAR DISTILLERY HEAD Gearhart, June 20. (AP) Jack B. Bladine, publisher of the McMinnville Telephone Regis ter, today was nominated for the presidency of the Oregon News paper Publishers association. The assembled publishers heard J. B. Deacon of New Vork, distillery executive, pre dict that by September no more whiskey would be produced In the United States for the dura tion. Distilleries are being con verted to defense use rapidly. There is, however, a four-year stock of liquor on the nation's shelves so the stoppage of dis tilling of spirits will not immed iately be noticed, he said. The American people are not like the befuddled subjects of Hitler who must be told anew each January that their oppon ents will collapse this year, U. S. Supreme Court Justice Wil liam O. With several hours to kill be fore leaving for a training sta tion, the recruit wandered about town, met several friends. "What does your wife think about your enlistment?" asked one. "My wife?" ejaculated the astonished Iowan. The friends explained the re cruit had been married during a rather hilarious "farewell" par ty for him the night before. The young man quickly look ed up the girl, talked things over and brought her to the re , cruiting office, where she gave her consent and his enlistment papers were changed from "sin gle" to "married." STATE GOP: MEET; BIG AIDES ASKED Salem, June 20 (P) Execu tive committee members desig nated Eugene as the site for the 1942 convention of the Oregon Republican Club at an all-day session here today. The . con vention will be held early in the fall. Plans to hold the meeting at Bend, previously voted by the committee, were changed be cause of transportation uncer tainties, President R. M. Aubrey Sander, former Medford rest dent, is now an instructor at the airport at Arcadia, Fla., where he trains cadets for the U. S. army air corps. He lately completed instruction for his first group of cadets and is starting on the second group He writes friends in Medford that the weather is particularly warm in Florida. His brother, Harold E. Sander, Is in the ferrying corps at Long Beach, Cal., ferrying bombers east to Detroit and Florida. He has Just completed officer's training school and his commission as a second lieutenant has been sent to Washington, D. C, for recom mendation. SHELL EMPLOYES Over 55,000 pounds of scrap rubber in five days is the achievement of Shell Oil com pany employes in the Jackson county area, cooperating in the nation-wide salvage drive, ac cording to Ted Horneeker, local manager, who released the fig ures Saturday. The company's aides have gathered in over 4,000.000 pounds in four days in the state, Mr. Horneeker said. While the total brought in so far has been impressive, Mr. Horneeker feels that much addi tional rubber may be ob tained If each householder will make a diligent search and in ventory on his own premises. "If each home in Medford would give ten pounds of scrap rubber, the total would fill ten trucks". Horneeker said, pointing out that the smaller pieces of rub ber salvaged from homes is much more desirable than the type which can be reclaimed from old tires. Ordered to devote their entire time including Saturdays and Sundays to the rubber drive, the local Shell staff has formed two teams, the "Scrap Rubber Pack Rats," and the "Scavengers' , to bring the competition element into their efforts. The men are under orders to give all their attention to the campaign, ex cept for essential business. Rubber left at Shell stations throughout Jackson county is being taken to the company's plant on South Central avenue to await government shipping orders. In addition to Shell sta tions, rubber may be left at any service station, all attendants being authorized to make pay. ment for same. Civilian Defense Activities Instruction in the civilian de fense general course will be started Tuesday night, June 23, and continue Thursday night, June 25 at 7:30 in rooms 34 or 35 at the senior high school. The ladies motor corps and drivers of all divisions are urgently asked to attend. This course Is required for air raid wardens, fire watchers and others In civil ian defense, so make arrange ments to attend these courses. The Medford Athletic associa tion has announced there will be a truck and a man to accept scrap rubber on Sunday at the ball park, on the same basis as the service stations.
