OP) An un specified number of peasants were reported today being held as hostages in Liege province, Belgium, by the local and fed eral gendarmerie until sufficient wheat is delivered from their farms to conform to requisition ing orders. The peasants, the reports said. were seized after they refused to hand over their wheat. With the food situation grow ing more serious, the official journal today published a decree providing penalties of up to 10 years' imprisonment and fines of 5,000.000 francs (about $115, 000 at the last official rate of exchange) for persons who wil fully permit foodstuffs to perish. Penalties up to three years Im prisonment and fines of 100.000 francs (about $2,300) were tixed for persons guilty of allowing foodstuffs to perish through negligence. Pay In Food French and Belgian author! ties, it was reported, have agreed that seasonal Belgian workers in France be paid partly in bread and other foodstuffs. Bel gian workers returning home will be allowed to take back 100 pounds of food, mostly bread while those who work in the sugar beet fields will get an ex tra sugar allowance. The French, the report said. have also agreed to deliver 1,500 tons of molasses and 1,000 tons of fruit to Belgium in return for Belgian manpower. Paris newspapers today ran announcements calling on Frenchmen to sign up for work in Germany. The number of special German employment agencies in Paris and its vicinity has been doubled. McNutt, ! director of the Office of Defense, , Health and Welfare, the presi dent declared that such districts contributed a major part of the venereal disease Infection found in army camps and naval sta tions. O, Sanden who was present In the con gregation suggested that the bell be rung as signal for a moment of prayer and for those participating in the struggle for democracy. (IP) Fifteen million German women now are engaged in war work, 9,400.000 of them in vari ' otis kinds of compulsory service, an announcement in Berlin said j today. Six million are married and j 2,500,000 have children who are ' cared for during the day in nazl party institutions.
