Addressing the Music Educa tors National Conference at Milwaukee recently, Bartholo mew expounded the belief that living on "canned" music from day to day Is Just as unsatisfac tory as any unvaried diet of canned food. Music "Is a funda mental human need." he con tended, "and something inside of yoj goes hungry and empty with out it." Good CitUanshlp The phonograph, radio and sound-films were conceded to be "magnificent Inventions," but the speaker held that they made it necessary for Americans to guard more intensively than ever against permitting the audience habit to dominate adult life in the United States. 'Today, with a second world war upon us, more devastating than the first, when we are fighting for the democratic way of living In all Its phases, when everything that we believe In Is under attack, we must fight this audience hnbit, Bartholomew declared. "In a large sense," the speaker pointed out, "Industrial human ity has ceased to be composed of Individuals and is made up simply of labor units. Mechan ical invention has turned a large part of the world's work from an art into a discipline. A great deal of what In the days of craftsmanship was creative effort has become drudgery." Also in Medford is Don T. Orput, Oregon field representa tive for the Federal Security Agency. Both motored to Ash land yesterday where they dis cussed soldier recreation and facilities in Ashland with vari ous officials and committee members. They were accompan led by Mrs. Helen Small, USO director and Mrs. Pennie Fon taine, USO program director, of this city. Following the meeting the Ashland committee mem bers expressed the belief that actual operation of a USO recre ational center in Ashland seem ed more certain. Orput recom mended that the Civic clubhouse be rented as a recreational center. Nazarens Church to Join Holiness Assn. meeting Thursday The Church of the Nazarene. Mc- Nully applied his brakes imme diately upon seeing the child. who was rolled by the fender, suffering only minor scratches and slight leg abrasions. The report at the city police station stated that the Spears child had been riding in an automobile being driven by O Jones of Lindsey, Cal.. which evidentally stopped on North Riverside avenue. The child ran from the front of this car into the path of the oncoming motor.
