OF Ten Per Cent or More of Income Is Pledged By All Workers in Four Counties Less than 48 hours after for mation of a Standard Oil of California "War Bond Army" employes of the Medford branch of the company had pledged themselves to Invest ten per cent or more of their income in war bonds, L. T. Nygaard, branch manager, said today. The local "War Bond Army" contingent includes one hundred per cent of the personnel of Standard Oil of California and of Standard Stations, Inc. The branch embraces all of Jackson and Josephine counties and por tions of Klamath and Douglas counties. Standard Stations, Inc., Is managed by O. A. Lowder back, whose headquarters is also located in Medford. , Glenn Jackson, assistant state administrator in ciurge of the southern Oregon counties for the Oregon war savings staff and William A. Gates, Jackson county chairman, expressed sat isfaction in the 100 per cent pay roll reduction program of the Standard organization in this area. Payroll deductions in some instances amounted to 20 per cent for some individual in vestors, according to Nygaard, and the example of the Standard is offered as a pattern for other concerns locally whose personnel recognize the importance of this vital war financing effort. Aides Lauded Mr. Nygaard paid special trib ute to three members of his size able organization who person ally contacted all employes and arranged for the payroll deduc tion pledges. These men were Norman Kerr, Ernest Saunby and Grant Todd. In arranging for participation of Standard Stations, Inc., John White of this city was cited by Lowderback for his personal contact of all personnel. According to Miss Farrell the war ration of sugar, that is one-half cup to a quart of fruit, makes a very satisfactory prod uct. Although this is not as sweet as the housewife usually cans her fruit, the flavor is good, and the shape and color also are retained. Miss Farrell suggests that housewives can their berries with the war ration sugar mak ing the syrup with the Juice of berries rather than water so as to take advantage of the natu ral sugar present in the fruit. Demonstrations will continue throughout the week In the fol lowing communities: June 16 Rogue River, at Mrs. Grizzel's with a picnic lunch. June 17 Medford, at the courthouse auditorium with a covered dish luncheon. June 18 Lost Creek, at Mrs. William Hoefft's with a covered dish luncheon. June 19 Prospect, at Mrs. Tubman's with a picnic tynch eon. TRAPPED MINERS T TO TOP Renton, Wash., June 15. (AP) Nearly 56 hours after they were trapped 350 feet below the surface by a cave-in in a coal mine gangway, Archie Skiver, 40, of Auburn, and Robert Ston ack, 20, Tacoma, were rescued last night without having suffer ed any harm worse than being chilled. Trapped Friday morning by the cave-in from which three others narrowly escaped, the pair was freed through the un ceasing efforts of fellow miners who dug a small tunnel around the slide in the Renton Mining company shaft at Talbot, two and one-half miles south of here. Hurry "Fag Bags" Is Word to Girls An urgent plea has gone out to Girl Scouts of Jackson county from Miss Esther Ansel, Port land regional Scout executive, urging all Girl Scouts, both individuals and troops, who have been working on the "fag bag project" to have all their quota of fag bags ready and de livered not later than June 20. In making her appeal to lo cal Scnut leader Mrs. Marjorie Pena, Medford, Miss Ansel point ed out that the bags must be ready for distribution starting with the week end of July 4. as that is a time when fire hazard in the forests is greatest. All women of the community who are Interested are urged to attend. The G ranee AUTO CRASH SUIT Selection of a Jury In the trial of the personal injury suit of Goldie Snyder, Ashland, against Harry L. Glem and wife started in circuit court today. The suit is based on an auto accident at the intersection of the Ashland Mine road and Pa cific highway, a year ago. The plaintiff seeks $3,000 and spe cial damages for alleged in juries. The case if expected to last two days. The plaintiff claims the re ceived various injuries and charge negligence on the part of the defendants. The defend ants also charge negligence, and further claim no injuries were manifested by the plaintiff when she filed an accident report with the Ashland police a short time after the mishap. The plaintiff is represented by Attorney W. M. McAllister, and the defendant by Attorney Don R. Newbury. TEMPERAMENTAL THIEF Denver, June 15. (AP The burglar was disgusted when he found only 15 cents in a piggy bank after breaking into the John Johnson apartment. So he smashed two dozen eggs on the walls and ceiling. LOSES OH APPEAL Washington, June 15 (IP) The United States court of ap peals today upheld the convic tinn r,f tha American Medical association and the medical soc iety of the District of ColumDia on charges of illegal restraint of trade in violation of the anti trust laws. The two organizations were convicted in district court last vrar of attemntine to thwart the aims of group health association. a cooperative of federal govern ment employes. Justice James M-. Proctor aiueosed fines of S2.500 aeainst the American Medical associf trict society. All individual defendants named in the indictments along with the two organizations -were acquitted at the trial.
