Sport Graphs o Billy Hulen Says: 0-C Flag Chase Is 3-Way Fight; Merchants Weak Thus far the Oregon-California league pennant race, exactly one-fourth of which is history. hai been atrictly a three-cornered battle among the Medford Crater, Klamath Falls Pelicani and Dorris (Cal.) Lumberjacks. Tha trio are deadlocked for the loop leadership, each with four wins and two losses, while he hapleci Grants Pass Mer chants art .burled deeply in the cellar with six straight setbacks. Each of the three top clubs have beaten Grants Pass twice, while their two defeats apiece have been suffered at the hands of the other leaders. The truth may be painful to Grants Pass supporters, but un less the Merchants do a lot of strengthening quickly they can just about be counted out of tha 24-game marathon. They don't have the hitting nor the fielding to offer much conten tion in the championship race. and their pitching could stand some Improvement. Grants Pass Is an awfully young team, being composed almost entirely of high school players, soma of whom have a't even been graduated. They are good looking bunch of boys, and enjoyed a whale oi season la prep competition, but right now can't quite hold their own with the more ex perienced Medford, Klamath Falls and Dorris clubs. Local fans ahould get plenty of value received for their dough tha coming week-end, when Red Tolbert'i fast-stepping Lumber Jacks come hert for a two-game erica Saturday night and Sun day afternoon. Tha series will be tha second the two clubs have played, each team winning game earlier in the season. Tha veteran Clyde Carlstrom, curve-balling righthander, will probably work the first contest for Dorris, with Bob Snider, a capable lefthander, taking the mound for tha visitors in the Sunday afternoon fracas. Carl strom. In three league starts, has yet to lose game. Like Curt Davis of "Dem Bums," he seems to be getting better with age. Manager Dutch Lleber of the Craters ha been forced to do little Infield revising, due to Alex McDonald, third baseman, leaving town for tha summer. Tha boss has shifted Don Faw cert from second to third and put Johnny G'.tzen, who played for tha University of Oregon freshman team this spring, at tha keystone. Fawcett looks grand on third base. In the Grants Pais twin bill Sunday he handled 11 chances perfectly, and In the opening game had four atraight assists, throwing out all three hitters In the second Inning and the first man up la the third. By Judson Bailey (Associated Press Sports Writer) Houdinl at his best could not have turned the tables on the Boston Braves as swiftly and completely as the Cincinnati Reds performed the trick ' this last week-end. Before Friday the Reds were floundering futilely in the sec ond division of the National league and tha Braves, who had been a bold second (or quite a spell, still were holding deter minedly to third place. Then Casey Stengel led his bsnd into an ambush at Cincin nati and in four days tha Reds beat the Braves six times lift ing Cincinnati to third and drop ing Boston to a groggy fifth. The Reds completed their sweep yesterday with a 3-1 triumph on the three-hit hurl ing of big Paul Derringer. Yank Win For eight innings tha right hander had a no-hit game and the only Boston player to get on base reached first through an error In the opening inning. Derringer finally was tapped for three singles and a run in the ninth. There was only ona other game scheduled in tha major leagues yesterday and in this the New York Yankees squeezed out an 11-10 decision over Cleve land when Replef Pitcher Tom Ferrlck made a wild throw on Joe Gordon's sacrifice bunt with two on base in the 11th inning. It was a suitable payoff for a game in which each club used three pitchers and the world champions made 16 hit and three errors to Cleveland's 19 hits and two mlscues. (PV Immortal Bobby Jones, after 12 years of virtual retirement, will attempt to leap back into golfing glory In the Hale American national open next week. Playing some of his best golf in a decade, as Indicated by a par-slashing 54 hole last week end, he' coming here to win, although he won't admit It. V, Reiser Nears Phelps In Race for Batting Lead of Senior Loop New York, June B. (Pi The American league has been hav ing a two-man race for batting honors almost since the opening of the season and now tha Na tional league is getting some of the same. Pete Reiser, last year's bat ting champion in the senior circuit, has been sprinting dur ing the last week and today had a lusty .363 average, close on the heels of Gordon (Babe) Phelps, Pittsburgh catcher. Phelp ha been out of action because of a spiked heel and made his first appearances In the Pirate lineup in more than a week on Sunday. He was called on to pinch hit twice and made one hit to inflate his aver age to .373. On the same day Reiser made six hits. Joe Gordon of the New York Yankees, riding the crest of a 25-game batting streak, still is the American league leader with .388, 13 points ahead of Bobby Doerr of the Boston Red Sox. The Yankees and Red Sox, between them, held seven places among the top 10 hitters in their league. Four Dodgers were among the National league lead ers, but otherwise the places were well distributed with the tenth man dropping below .300 for the first time this season. Unable to raise a main gate at the Savage Rapids dam, due to a broken pipe connected with the hydraulic lift. Irrigation Dis trict Manager Reed Carter and a crew of employes replaced the gate Sunday with 13 huge pieces of lumber. The timbers were 12 inches square and 30 feet long and were slid into place above the dam until such time as the pipe can be repaired and the gate can be raised to its natural position. Solon Condemns Route To Alaska Washington, June 9 HP) Urg ing immediate construction of a highway to Alaska west of the Rocky mountain and condemn ing the inland route road now being constructed as "waste of million and millions of dol lars," Congressman Warren G Magnuson (D., Wash.) said today the United States is in danger of losing Alaska unless a west ern road is built. '"i hi 20 SO30 J 1 PINT afcoOAJnj S.'t 1mI JOE CORBETT IN GRAPPLE FEATURE Sockeye Jack McDonald dis posed of Australian Joe Corbett by the margin of two falls to one In their main event wTet- ling match in the armory last night, but the ex-Tacoma logger had no easy time of it with his powerful opponent Corbett put up a whale ot a battle, taking the second fall with three resounding sonnen bergs and a body press, and right up to the time McDonald wound up the struggle with the third and deciding tumble Big Joe was definitely "in the run ning." The end came witA rather abrupt suddenness. They were mauling each other around the ring when McDonald suddenly grabbed Corbett and heaved him against the ropes. As Cor bett rebounded McDonald drove his shoulder Into the Corbett stomach and down went Cor bett. Three times Sockeye tos sed Joe into the ropes, and as many times sonnenberged him as he bounced back., On the fourth time McDonald clamped on a body scissors and both roll ed to the floor, where Corbett was pinned with a press. McDonald took the initial fall with a body press, after giving his opponent three hip locks. Infuriated, Belcastro attacked Craig, and when Yoakley tried to separata the pair Pete turned on the ref eree. Finally Craig and Yoak ley maneuvered Pete into a cor ner and took turns whacking him into submission. In the four-round opener m. a newcomer to sotithcra Oregon, wrestled to a draw, each obtaining one fall. Olsen got his in the second round with a body press, and the Indian used a leg strap in the fourth to even the count.
