Damages Station The serv ice station at the Sunrise Auto camp on North Riverside ave nue was considerably damaged yesterday, according to a report on file at the city police station. F. J. Jones, Crater hotel, ap plied brakes on the pickup he was driving in order to avoid hitting a car crossing the inter section, the brakes locked and threw the pickup into the serv ice station, the report stated. To Salem Among Medford residents who motored to Salem to attend the first state accor dian festival yesterday were Mr. and Airs. Traffic Violations Claude Dermond of Prospect was cited by state police to appear in the justice court today on a charge of driving a car without a li cense and a muffler. James C. Clark was cited to appear in the Justice court tomorrow for operating an automobile with four persons over 12 in the front seat Scheduled to appear in the Jacksonville Justice court today was Fred A. Trumbly. charged with passing an automobile with insufficient clearance. Minor Mishaps William I Bralnard, 438 South Fir street and J. B. Applegate is reported to have been only slightly in jured according to report on file. Time Changed Crater Lake Guild annual picnic will be held at the home of Mrs. Verl Walk er on the Old Pacific highway at 6:30 o'clock rather than 8 o'clock tonight, those in charge said today. V Meeting Changed Oak Grove Neighborhood club will meet with Mrs. Ethel Roots, Jackson ville, June 24 tor potluck lun cheon rather than June 13 as previously announced. Week-end Hare Ted Barthell. a seaman in the U. S. navy sta tioned at San Diego, spent the week-end here visiting his mother, Josephine Barthell of Sacred Heart hospital. Special Meeting A special meeting will be held at Jackson ville grange tonight at 8 o'clock at which time Dr. W. W. P. Holt will discuss the "Casualty Sta tion". Grange members, P-T. A. and Boy Scouts are asked to be present. To Salem Mrs. W. H. Fischer and son, Robert Lea of Route S left here Sunday morning for Salem, where the boy will play an accordion solo in the state accordion festival tonight. Mrs. Fischer and Robert Lee will re turn to Medford Tuesday. Ladies Troup Ladies Mount ed Troop will hold a short business session at the Posse stables tonight at 7 followed by a horseback ride. Members are asked to bring a guest. This is the meeting postponed from last Monday due to inclement weather. f Summer Round-up Annual summer round-up for pre-school children will be held at Howard school tomorrow at 10 a. m. with Dr. A. E. Merkel present. A similar round-up is scheduled for Coryell trailer camp Wed nesday at the same time for pre school children. There is no charge for the clinic. Unit to Meet Oak Grove Ex tension unit will meet Tuesday at 10:30 a. ra. with Iva Thomas. Picnic lunch will be served at noon, followed by installation of officers. Those attending are asked to bring a picnic dish and their service. All homemakers are invited. Home Entered The residence of Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Manno, 646 South Holly street, was en tered sometime Saturday eve ning by someone removing the screens from window, accord ing to a report on file at the city police station. A billfold containing valuable papers, but no money, was the only item missing. Small Fire The pumper of the city fire department answer ed a ward alarm at the residence of James Martin, 107 East Second street at 12:28 o'clock this morning. Minor damage was reported by the fire depart ment, when a cigarette evident ly set mattress on fire, also scorching the wall and floor. The British reported that their artillery fire had smashed an other attempt by Field Marshal Erwin Rommel's columns yes terday to break through toward Tobruk 15 miles northeast of Knightsbridge. At the same time, a commu nique said, the Free French at Bir Hacheim threw back a tank assault at that bastion menacing the right flank of Rommel's forces. It was the second time In as many days that the British had reported the axis chieftain re pulsed in an attempt to break through at Knightsbridge. CENTRAL POINT SOLDIER PROMOTED TO CORPORAL Fort Lewis, June 8 (P) The army announced the promotions of three Oregonlans today. They included: From Central Point, Ore Pvt. First class Ray R. Cox was promoted to corporal. HBRSHEY NOT COMING Salem, June 8 (AP) General Lewis B. Hershey, national se lective service director, will be unable to make his proposed visit to Oregon, Colonel Elmer V. Wooton, state selective service di rector, said today. $50 MINIMI PAY FOR FIGHTING MEN VOTED BY SENATE Washington, June The senate voted today to in crease the minimum pay in the armed forces to $50 monthly, to raise that of first class privates and corresponding naval ratings to $34 and to make all pay in creases effective as of June 1. Action came on a motion of Senator La Follette (Prog-Wis). to return to conference a military pay, adjustment bill and to ac cept house amendments. La Follette's motion was adopted after Senator Austin (R Vt) had filed a conference report outlining compromise proposal agreed upon by a Joint senate house committee. This compro mise would have fixed the min imum pay at $46. with first class privates and others of equal r?"k receiving $52. By adoption of La Follette's motion, the senate instructed its conferees to carry out the ne cessary parliamentary procedure to approve the $50-$54 pay scale previously voted by the house. Tar Explodes A cabin at the Rainbow Auto Court was smok ed up about 12:12 p. m. today when roofing tar, which J. B. Shaw was heating in a boiler on a stove, exploded. Havecock of Sebring, Fla., escaped unhurt yesterday when his army fighter plane crashed about a half mile from Cove Point, McChord field officials reported.
