At a meeting of civilian de fa n I e recreational committee heads and United Service Or ganization officiali held at the Hotel Medford yeterday, a clearing house for recreational activities for armed forces to be ttationed near Medford was vested In the County Defense Recreational committee. Don Orput, Federal Security Administration's recreat tonal field representative for Oregon, presided at the session which was called for the purpose of clarifying functions of the vari ous agencies which have to do with the recreation of the sol diers In Medford and surround ing vicinity. Long At Work The Defense Recreational committee organized In Medford last summer, headed by Mrs. A. S. Carpenter, which has been working Intensively since that time setting up committees to carry on necessary organization, was deemed a clearing house for recreational work. This over all responsibility for the re creational program will em brace the active cooperation and assistance of USO. It is expected that the com munity will cooperate whole heartedly In this prosjram which Orput and Henry H. Cutterson, USO regional building counselor from San Francisco, said "will take the responsibility and co operation of everyone." Lloyd Rupp, labor recreational leader who was present, said "it is a job for all." Those in attendance pointed out that the size of the recrea tional program facing Medford will take the cooperation and help of everyone residing In the community. Such a task has never before presented itself to southern Oregon citizens and it is expected that all will partici pate in the program with the arrival of Camp White soldiers. To Avoid Overlap The purpose of a clearing house for recreational activities was described as a necessity in order to avoid duplication of committees, activities and per sonnel. All activities sponsored by USO or any other civic body including the many War Recrea tional committees which have recently been formed by the public relations committee of the Medford Defense Recreation, committee, headed by I. E. Schuler, will also work through the defense recreational com mittee. Mr. Cutterson said he was pleased with the progress of re pairs on the temporary USO center at Main and Bartlett streets which will open soon. Mrs. Helen Johnson will serve as director of the center with Mrs. Penny Fontaine as USO program chairman. Appreciation Voiced Mr. Orput expressed apprecia tion for the excellent organiza tion work done by Mrs. A. S. ' Medford's recently created , Victory Center, established for ; war bond and stamp activity here, has been selected as the scene of a public ceremony in ' which the Pearl Harbor Aveng ers will receive the navy oath. This "center" is located on the Southern Pacific right-of-way on Front street, near the Jackson county Chamber of Commerce offices, A commissioned officer, pos sibly Lt. M. C. Peters of the Portland navy recruiting office will be present to administer the oath of enlistment. The Med ford recruiting office will re main open until 11:00 p. m. every evening this week to ac cept applications from men wishing to participate in this event. Since Friday will be the last day for this program, men are urged to make application as early as possible. Evangelist Reads Jesus' Sentence One of the best audiences of the revival greeted Evangelist Earl Hanson Fife last night at the Central avenue Church of Christ tabernacle to hear his message on . the "Deity of Christ." As promised, the evangelist read an official copy of the death sentence of Jesus as given by Titchendorf who discovered Pilate's letters to Tiberius Caesar while searching for a copy of the Bible in Rome. Names of the two thieves cruel fied with Jesus, the centurion and others were givn. Tonight, Mr. Fife will con tinue his series of prophetical sermons when he speaks on "The Atonement." Melvin Sparks is in charge of the singing and Is leading in a very acceptable way. The themes for Thursday and Friday nights are "The Second Corning of Christ" and "Armageddon."
