Newspaper Page TextPAGE TEN MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD OREGON, TUESDAY, MAY 28, 1942. DEFENSE CRAFTS ILL General Sheet Metal and Ship Carpentry To Be Taught at High School. Two classes in general sheet metal work and two national de fense course in ship carpentry were announced today by the city school superintendent'! of lice. The sheet metal classes are being organized to meet the demand for workers at Camp White and other national de fense projects and ail are spon sored by the federal govern ment. Scott E. Brill will be in structor for the sheet metal courses and Richard Anderson for ship carpentry. The sheet metal classes will be organized at the high school shop building Monday and Tuesday, June 1 and 2, the first class to meet on Mondays, Wed nesdays and Fridays from 8:30 until 10 p. m. The second class will be held the same hours on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Satur days. These hours are subject to change, it was announced, if it is found that a shift in time will better accommodate the men. Long Experience Mr. Brill has had long experi ence in the sheet metal field and was formerly connected with the Brill Sheet Metal Works in this city. For the past 16 months he has taught aviation sheet metal in the na tional classes. This aviation sheet metal class has been dis continued for the time being, E. H. Hedrick, city school superin tendent announced. The first ship carpentry class will be organized at the high school shop Monday, June 1 at at 6:30 p. m. This class will meet from 6:30 until 10 p. m on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The second class will organize Tuesday at 6:30 p. m with meetings scheduled for Tuesdays, Thursdays and Satur days. Each class will enroll about 20 men, Mr. Hedrick stated. It was explained that ship Joinery classes are not a begin ner's course and only men who are capable of doing finish car pentry will be accepted. Pur pose of the course is to train men, who are already carpent ers, in ship Joinery work so that they may, if they wish, go di rectly to the shipyards when the work at Camp White has been completed. In this connection, Mr. Hedrick stated, that men who take the ship Joinery course cannot be cleared from Medford for the shipyards until their em ployers signify to the employ ment office that their services can be dispensed with here. Furnish Own Tools Each carpenter will furnish his own tools, but need not bring his tools for the organize tion meetings Monday and Tues day evenings. Mr. Anderson, instructor. Is native of Sweden and first learned his trade as a young man in that country. He later spent four years at sea and was a ship Joiner in San Pedro dur ing the first World war. He has had extensive experience both in shipyards and as a gen eral construction man. It was explained that classes will be filled on a "first come, first served" basis of qualified men. Those desirous of enrolling in any of the four classes should apply at the city school super intendent's office, city hall, be tween 8 a. m. and S p. m. If unable to appear at those hours they may enroll by telephoning 2137. BUDGET TOO HIGH Salem, May 26 (A") Marlon county's budget committee went to work Unlay, trying to prune the tentative budget which is $8,577 in excess of the legal maximum. County departments asked for $982,362, Including a new Item of $12,000 for civilian defense. WARN BEER AGENTS Portland, May 26 ,1") The State Liquor Control Commis sion warned beer salesmen yes terday that their expenditures will be watched closely in the future. The Commission heard complaints that the salesmen were spending undue amounts in clients' establishments and were entertaining retailers on brewery funds. GIRL SCOUTS TO RECEIVE AWARDS A special service court of awards will be held Wednesday at 7:30 p. m. at the court house auditorium for Girl Scouts. In addition to presenting badges which the Scouts have earned -since January, senior Scouts will receive special recognition for completion of civilian defense service projects which include first aid, out-door cookery, gard ening, child care, knowing Morse code and others. A project in cooperation with the Keep Oregon Green society and the forest service has been making of bright red fag bags. These bags will be contributed during the ceremony. Prizes have been offered to the troop contributing the most bags and to the individual Girl Scout turning in the largest number, Theme of the court of awards is "Service for Victory" and special patriotic numbers will be presented by the troops. Ap proximately . 15 Girl Scouts have completed requirements for first class award, the largest number to be completed at any one time in the history of girl scouting in Medford. The awarding of badges and special service pins at this cere mony completes the regular weekly programs In the troops. Monthly meetings for out-door cookery and special gardening projects will be carried on by individual t.r o o p meetings Regular scouting activities will continue during Day camp which opens June 2 and con tinues each Tuesday, Wednes day and Thursday during the month of June. T The civil suit of L. J. Austin against E. G. Dow, on appeal from justice court for collection of $160 allegedly due as com mission on real estate sale, was underway before a circuit court Jury today. Statipn Manager Mas C. Henne said the new schedules will give Medford air travelers a choice of three daily round trips both north and south, with convenient connections to the east. Northbound flight to Port land, Seattle and Vancouver, B. C, will leave at 4:48 a. m., 11:57 a. m. and 9:33 p. m. Flights to San Francisco, Los Angeles and other California cities win leave at 10 82 a. m.. 5:82 p. m. and 12:12 a. m. While a considerable portion of air travel will be on a priority basis. United Air Lines and other air lines still are directly in control of the nation's air transportation service, Henne said.
