"As a matter of fact, I'd like to pick up this room just as it is and carry it off." "Shucks!" exclaimed Miss Ca milla. "This stuff is purty nigh as old as Adam. It's what I saved from that old devil Sherman. I reckon he'd have stolen it, too, or burnt it, li my mother hadn't stood his men off with an ax." "Is that what she did really?" said Fred; Interested. "It certainly ii what aha did," said Miss Camilla, her eyes flash ing. "She nearly chopped off one Yankee's fingers and was only oirv she couldn't chop- off his heed. The idea, molesting a decent woman ordering her out of her house, and threatening to burn it over her head! "They can't afford to pay rent for the furniture," Kathleen add ed. He was doing it now, as he and Ruby were sitting upon a grassy bank of a brook, the remnants of their picnic lunch scattered about them. "And the only reason I hold on to the newspaper lob," he was saying, "is to keep the wolf from the door. Otherwise. I'd drop everything and devote all my time to the play." "That wouldn't be wise," said Ruby. "I think writing for a time, anyway should be an avo cation." ' "Yes," said Joe, "you're right" "But never mind, Joe," Ruby went on. "Once you get something over, you won't have to bother about the old wolf at the door. He'll be so far from you, you'll never, never find him. "And you really think my play might do?" said Joe. "It might, yes. . The changes we've discussed ought to help. You must get to work on it right away." Ruby sst up. lit a cigar ette. "If it reads at all like it ought to, I can send a copy to a man I know in New York" Tempted JOE moved closer. "You're being awfully generous and kind. Miss Howard," he said. "Call me Ruby," said the ac tress. " 'Miss Howard' sounds so formal and cold." She smiled one of her very best smiles. "After all, a playwright and an actress oughtn t to be so er remote." "No," said Joe, liking Ruby's perfume a perfume that did odd things to his emotions. "They ought to be friends at least" "Yes," said Ruby, "at least" She patted Joe's hand where it rested near her. "Oh. I tell you what let's do let's go wading! I haven't been wading since I was a little girl." "Okav!" said Joe. "1 wish we'd brought along our swim suits. We could have had a swim up at the pona. Joe kicked off his sport shoes, took off his socks, and rolled his slacks up to his knees. "All set?" he called. "All set!" said Ruby. Joe stepped into the water. He held out his hand, and Ruby took it They waded down the brook for some distance, exclaiming over some young trout that scur ried away at their approach, gath ered some smooth white pebbles A wave of sympathy for the woman swept over Joe. S. ahips and took off sailors on the pretext that they were British subjects. In 1S07 three Americans, who had been forced in the British navy, deserted and shipped aboard the U. S. frigate Chesa peak put out to sea the British ship Leopard opened fire, killed several of the Chesapeake's crew and forced her to surrender. Because all gear for firing the guns was still packed up, tha Chesapeake could not defend herself.
