To Convention Archie Fang ex of Medford, junior In engi neering at Oregon State college, is one of 12 students from the college who will attend the American Society of Mechanical Engineers convention at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, B. C, in the near future, according to a release from the O.S.C. news bureau. Disorderly Conduct Edward Meyer Mehaffey, 44, was fined $25 in city court yesterday for disorderly conduct. Daniel Ber nard McCarthy, Paul Pendley and John Lawson were each assessed 91U anu aciiicmcu iw five days in jail, suspended, on drunkenness charges. Henry N. Fuller was sentenced to five days in jail for drunkenness. Meet Tonight Mrs. Ralph U. Boutelle, chairman of the can cer control work in Jackson county announced today that a cancer meeting will be held at 8 o'clock tonight at the county court house auditorium. Com mittee members, those who have been working on cancer week and others interested are invited. Due to delay in transit the cancer film, scheduled to be shown, will not be available until a later date. However work on the project will be dis cussed. The baby weighed six pounds and has been named Mary Brigid. Mrs. Mary Reddy of Los Angeles, mother of Mrs. Colvig, is spending several weeks with the Colvigs. THREE SENTENCED Three cantonment workers were sentenced in justice court yesterday for violation of the liquor laws, covering autos and highways. Jerome J. Robldeau, charged with driving an auto while un der the influence of liquor was sentenced to 30 days in the county jail, fined $100 and costs and had his liquor and driver's licenses suspended for one year. Harvey A. Wilkins and Char lie Hair, passengers in the Robl deau car, charged with being drunk on a public highway, were each assessed $10 and costs. They were all arrested on the Snowy Butte road, near the cantonment area early yester day morning. Richard E. Wagner, Central Point, charged with operating an overloaded truck, was fined SI. 50 and costs, and John D. Cooley was assessed the same for Insufficient lights on his truck. PEA HANDS NEEDED Pendleton, Ore., April 30 (IP) Confronted with a shortage of labor both In the fields and canneries, Umatilla county pea growers and cannery owners will meet tonight at Athena to plan for recruiting workers. County plantings of 43,000 acres are 25 per cent greater than last year. Cm Mill Tribune rait ads ouawrt ts re OFFICIAL TO HELP NURSES AID CORPS Miss Campbell of the Pacific coast division of the American Red Cross arrived in Medford this week from San Francisco to assist the Jackson County Nurse's Aid Corps in its forma tion and to outline its proced ure. She complimented Mrs. C. W. Ashpole, chairman of the local committee, on the organization work already accomplished, at a meeting held Tuesday evening at Sacred Heart hospital. The government has asked for 100, 000 nurses' aids to be trained as quickly as possible. Fourteen members of the Jackson County Nurses' Aid Corps committee attended the meeting. Ten applicants for the nurses' aid training course have already signed and five more applications can be accommo dated. Applicants are to secure blanks from Miss Roberts at the local Red Cross office in the courthouse. Thereafter appli cants are required to consult Mrs. Earl Tumy, a member of the Jackson County Nurses' Aid Corps committee at the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce building on May S, from 12 to 4 p. m. or May 7 from 12 to 4 p. m. for qualifications. Nurses' Aid training classes will start May 17 under direc tion of Miss Mooney, R. N., graduate of St. Vincent's hospi tal of Portland. :53 TAKEN BY DEATH John Henry Helman, 83, resident of Medford for the past four years, passed away at his home 420 Pearl street, at 3:13 p. m. Wednesday. Mr. Helman was born In Cleveland, Ohio, June 16, 1888 and came west with his parents, the late Rev. and Mrs. Charles E. Helman when he was six years of age. They settled In Idaho and although a youth, he assisted his father in building a Methodist church at Haley. He later studied law and practiced that profession at vari ous places in the state. He was a veteran of World War No. 1 and past commander of the American Legion post at Pay ette, Idaho. Fraternally, he held member ship in the Masonic order at Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Besides his wife, Alice Hel man, he leaves seven children, Ann, Thomas, Jack, Alice, John, Charles and Marjory Helman, all at home; also his mother, Mrs. Charles E. Helman of Boise, Idaho. Two sisters also survive, Mrs. Frances Ludlow and Mrs. Agnes Massey of Nam pa, Idaho. Funeral services will be held in the Conger chapel at 2 p. tn. Saturday with the Rev. Louis C. Klrby and Rev. C. Edwin Cox officiating. Interment will take place in Siskiyou Memorial park. Final rites at the grave side will be in charge of the Medford Masonic lodge. Ernest Peterson, of the Ore gon Journal, spoke at length on his trip east to airplane, anti-aircraft gun, and tank fac tories and answered questions relating to the winning of the war by Uncle Sam. A com mittee, consisting of Clarence Meeker, E. J. Neumann, H. C. High and J. C. Tucker, was appointed to present a plan and personnel for promoting a per manent organization of an all- men's movement to be known as "The Methodist Brotherhood of Medford." The society will be open to all christian men of the community. Rev. Louis C. Kirby an nounced the object of the move ment is to create a stronger tie between the man and the lad, to consider the social needs of the soldier boys, and to discuss moral Issues for the betterment of the community.
