PAGE SEVEN Veronica Lake's New Comedy Hit, "Sullivan's Travels" Opens Today MEDFORD MAIL TKIBUXE, MEDFORD, OREGON, SUNDAY, APRIL 26, 1SJ2 JOEL MCREA IS CO-STARRED IN Co-starring glamorous Ver onica Lake and broad-shouldered Joel McCrea, "Sullivan's Travels" brings one of the year's top laugh hits to the Craterian theatre today for a three day run. That honey-blonde Veronica, who scored so impressively In "I Wanted Wings" as an allur ing siren, was chosen for the chief feminine role in the up roarious comedy, has occasion ed quite a stir among film fol lowers. Veronica, In the minds of many, was destined to go on playing "vamp" roles. But these film devotees, after all, had seen Veronica in only one picture and didn't know her versatility. Then, too, they didn't reckon on a fellow , named Preston Sturges, who sees a lot that most directors don't. Pairing tall, handsome Joel McCrea and luscious Ver onica Lake as a romantic com edy screen team Is a stroke of good judgment that can be at tributed only to wily Sturges. Advance reports are that they make an exciting and smooth working duo. The story of "Sullivan's Tra vels" sounds like a natural for comedy. Sturges creates a char acter named John L. Sullivan, a screw-ball Hollywood direc tor wno nas made a success directing comedies, but who wants to make pictures of soc ial significance heavy with "messages." Of course, if we know Sturges and we do by now he plays this up kidding ly. The idea is that Sullivan, played by McCrea, goes out into the world dressed as a hobo, ready to learn about the tougher aspects of life. What he learns convinces him that he can best serve people by bringing more laughter into the world which is what he does. In between he meets beauti ful, provocative Veronica, and takes her along with him on his travels, dressed as a hobo ette. To be sure, Veronica gets plenty of opportunity to wear glamour clothes and bathing suits. What happens to them as they go careening around the country provides many of the hilarious "Sullivan's Trav els" situations. Professors Investigate in "Ball of Fire" Gneiienau Damage Heavy New York. Agriculture committee chair man J. C. Lusk reported there would be a representative of the county agent's office at the Grange hall in Eagle Point on April 28 at 9 a. m. with poison ed grain. People of the com munity are urged to be there at that time and Join in distribu tion of this grain for eradica tion of squirrels. Ways and means committee, with help of the H. E. will sponsor a supper party soon. . A gift was presented to our newly-wed members, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Hanscom. H.E.C. will meet April 29. Henri Honore Giraud, commander of a group of armies in the "battle of the bulge" in northern France two years ago, has escaped from the fortress at Koenlgstein, Ger many, the Berlin radio said to day. Gen. Giraud had been a pris oner of war since May 21, 1940. I The Germans said he had been granted special facilities because of poor health.
